One is an office position with a very lucrative salary with three weeks paid vacation after one year of service , medical and a yearly bonus
starting salery is 100k+
the other is a blue-collar type position which pays a decent
wage, but not nearly as much as the white collar position and only one week vacation after a year of service and some benefits such as medical. starting salery is 35k+
let's presume your hair is at least shoulder length on average. perhaps much longer even mid-back and it took you a few years to get it to this point and the ladies just love your long hair because it's very shiny and well groomed so you're always receiving compliments.
if you accept the office job you have to get your hair cut short and keep it above the collar of your shirt and off the ears neatly tapered on the nape and around the ears at all times. yes, that short!
you try to negotiate on hair length, but the interviewing manager informs you that "it's company policy".
on the other hand, the blue collar job has no requirement regarding hair length, but they only require you to tie it back for safety reasons as they also require the same regarding female employees with longer hair. so in other words you are allowed to keep your hair long.
also, lets include the fact that you just bought a fairly expensive home and you have one kid and your wife has another on the way.
so which job will you take?
does money matter more or does your hair?
I would choose the office position since I work in an office,
also have long hair, and am free to wear what I want to wear.
I've been with this company for 25 years now, for many of those years i've had waist length hair. A few years ago they hired
a guy on the loading dock that has hair that isn't as long but is long enough to tie into a pony tail.
The dress at this company is also casual, many days i'm
wearing cut off shorts, jeans, or overalls. So not all
office jobs require short hair or for you to get dressed up.
I get 5 weeks hols so I'm not bothered.
I was going to say I wouldn't even consider a job that offered less than 20 days plus 10 public holidays like we get almost as standard over here.
This is where I ask myself what kind of position I put myself in, and find a nice IT related job that gives me the best of both worlds.
If it has to be one of these, I would go for the blue collar job since I've once experienced the long hair and I wish regain that former title. Jobs should not judge based on the length of one mans' hair, but his ability to perform a job. If I recall correctly, Justin poste da video of a longhair who was told once he cut his locks he would get the job - he didn't get it. It's like telling someoe if they lose enough weight they would be given said job.
I've had a position regarding food, and surprisingly enough they were lenient as long as I kept it tied back.
There's a little more to your scenario than just the question of money vs. hair, from my point of view. If I'm only worried about myself, I'm free to stick to my guns and go for the lower paying job. But your scenario stipulates that I have a family. My first priority as a husband and father is providing for them. If I can do that on the lower pay, then good for me. But if that salary won't make ends meet, then I bite the bullet and do what I have to do to make it work.
Of course, there are many more variables that aren't considered. If my wife also works and we can get by on the lower-paying job and her pay, then that's another possibility.

Why MUST you get your hair cut?
In a hypothetical situation where if I had to support a wife and kids, and pay off a house mortgage, I will CUT my hair as I consider my family NEEDS more important. If the current job was not paying enough to keep my loved ones free from financial stress and their quality of life was not so good then the priority would be their comfort and security rather then keep my long hair, much as it would distress me to cut it.
In reality, if I already owned my own home, and could comfortably exist on a lower income with family to support then I would go with the lower paying job and KEEP my long hair.
The mortgage trap keeps many people in jobs that they otherwise would not do as they have to find a way to keep their heads above water.

I'd take the lower paying option anyday.
Well, I believe that if your hair gets a lot of attraction from the ladies, your wife will probably be on your neck for you to cut it. Or not having it at all. Of course there are would trust their husbands and keep a cool head about it, but the great share of them would be jealous.
Small detail, but it's kind of contradictory if you think about it. Answering the question, for me it's not the hair neither the money that matters, it's the welfare of my family. If the extra money was necessary to keep them safe and sound, I would definitely do it. Family is a priority above hair, and hair grows back, after all. After you can get a stable position for your family, the mane can make a return and you can be the long-haired hero of the house =)
I'd rather be myself than be a suit any day... but I guess if I could be a suit and be myself at the same time (keep the long hair), I'd go for that, too ^_~ .
But to answer the question, I'd go for the lower paying job if it could keep everything paid for... just for the hair ;) .
(the lower paying job you describe makes more money than I make in the school system anyways, so maybe it's not such a bad deal after all :o hmmm..... :p hah! anywho~)
Sincerely,
yoshiki
For $65K and 2 extra weeks of vacation plus other benefits I would cut my hair...all else being equal. Not that I would have house/family/etc.
Of course, this is from the position of making $100K or so a year, 4 weeks of vacation, full benefits and pension, AND no issue whatsoever about having long hair.
I have the first job and still have the hair. Mind you, our kids are a lot older than in your scenario. What was the question?
