Hi everyone,
I am a little disappointed right now. I know that stylists and salons are to be avoided at all costs, but since I still live at home, I don't necessarily have the option of avoiding them completely. Anyway, I went for a trim to get off split ends, which I know are not really that prevalent anyway, and lost at least three inches. It did not help that the stylist decided to do vigilante styling on my hair because she did not like how the back was longer than the front??? Those extra three inches were weighing my hair down real nice, and I am now back to a big bush of hair :(
I am sure you all know to avoid salons, but I really just wanted a place to get this all out. Thanks for listening.

Been there, I feel your pain.
I sure hear you and the whole story sounds so typical. I hear things like this all the time despite my advice to people to do Split Ends themselves. It is very easy. We call it "Target and Destroy." When and if you notice one, using very sharp sissors snip just above the Split. Presto, problem solved and no 3" all over your head suddenly swiped by someone who has "Selective Listening."
Oh well, in 6 months you will be back to where you were and from now on can do it yourself at your own pace.
Take care-
Justin~
Good ideas. If it were my own choice, I would definitely take care of split ends myself. Since I still live at home, I more or less have to go for regular trims, despite knowing better, and just hope it turns out fairly decent.
Your comments are always so encouraging. By time I get back to school in the fall, my hair should be looking real nice again!
Perhaps by the Fall, at that point you can just state to the family that you do not want to be butchered all over again. (Wait until the time comes for this.) Be sure to say it in a very non-abrasive way. An argument most likely will make you the loser.
Back in 2008 I made this video about Split Ends (among other things in the video) and it tells just what to do. No need for a trim. For whatever it is worth, here is that video from my series "For Men with Long Hair." Best of luck to you and hope you are enjoying a nice Weekend. :-)

several years ago I went to a Fantastic Sams place with shoulder length hair and got some guy who looked like he was high on something and told him that I wanted it trimmed up, but kept LONG.
he said "o.k. dude".
my hair tends to get bushy and split ends can be a problem and that is why I went to the salon to begin with if you can call Fantastic Sams a salon, that is.
did he listen?
HELL NO! when I got out of the chair my hair was about 1/4 over the top of my ears exposing 3/4's of my ears and barely collar length.
I felt like a real chump who had been taken advantage of!
needless to say he was NOT very professional and referring to a customer as "dude" when you don't even know the person is a perfect example of that.
incidentally, if there are a list of "long hair friendly" salons online I would sure appreciate a list.
You're in luck there most certainly is:

Another one learns the hard way. Stylists do not know how to measure or to respect their clients instructions. I assume that you did not pay the person?
Don't be too hard on ALL stylists. My partner is one that did and does listen to his clients. He retired and sold his shop some years ago and still has customers, coming by the house for cuts and styles. Never has taken more than is necessary. With split ends, he does do a "search and destroy" snip on select hairs. I have no qualms having my hair in his hands and neither do any of his customers. Caring stylists do exist. finding one is the issue.
I've found over the years the hard way that most stylists do what they want and don't listen to the client. I only found one who
did listen and her stop went out of business a few years ago.
Going to these stylists would be like hiring a house painter to
paint your house a light green and coming home to find out he
painted it purple.
It would be the equivalant of bringing your car to the mechanic to
have the radiator fixed only to find out he repalred the transmission, the engine, and the drive train.
Over the years i've only found one woman who styled my hair
the way I wanted and her shop went out of business years ago.
If you're a stylist and you're offended by this you should be.
You are right. In my disappointment, I made a stereotypical judgement. Like you say, I am sure there are good stylists.
If you can find a good one, that is great.
