I am growing long hair for first time and tried to grow it long last year but I think I made a mistake and went and got it thinned out and trimmed since my hair is thick and after it looked uneven and part of my hair sticked out on sides and wouldn't flatten. Also the length was below ear close to side of mouth last year. I decided to cut it really short during summer and start over and just avoid getting anything done and its been 9 months since i went to hair dressers. The length now is middle of ears and parted in middle. I wanted to know if I should avoid trimming and thinning it out and just let it grow out? Another question is i was curious about is how do you know when the awkward stage starts and is over? Like what length should it be when the awkward stage begins and what is length when the awkward stage is over?
Do NOT, do NOT cut it at the nape of your neck if you ever decide to not keep a mullet at that time. That just looks absolutely terrible.
Just keep growing it out.
I think the awkward stage depends a lot from person to person: straight/wavy/curly hair, coarse or soft, haircut you had when you started growing it, etc... they all play a role.
Let's just say you'll know when it's over. One day you'll be like "hey, my hair is just falling down now and not sticking out in weird places." Just hang in there.
If you are serious about growing your hair out then do NOT cut it. The awkward stage is a fact of life and you will know it is over when the weight of your hair maintains its shape naturally.
