Hey Guys,
I'm trying to grow a beard for the first time. The pic I'm showing you is the time where I feel like shaving. I wanted to get some opinions before I shave or do anything. The problem why I haven't been able to grow out a beard is I could never grow a full goatee. For some reason my beard cannot connect to my mustache. I tried countless times shaving that area, and well, I've gotten some stubs. Is this an age thing? Meaning the older I get maybe i'll start to get a fuller connecting line to my mustache? I don't know, maybe I'll just grow out my chin hairs a little more or maybe I'll shape the jaw line connecting to my chin into a line. I know there are different styles I can try out. I just don't know what style might look good with me.
P.S I do have long hair, I promise, it's just in a bun right now because I wanted us to only focus on my beard or somewhat of a beard I have.
thanks in advance,
rowie

Hey rowie,
Maybe it's just me but I really like how your beard and stash look together:) Looking at your pic I'm assuming you are Asian?Hope you don't mind me asking but it's just a hunch. You may just want to consider maintaining the beard at that short length but then I'm not sure what you might have in mind.Anyway I think it's a keeper and I bet you look stellar when your hair is down with that facial hair;)Cheers my friend!

Hi Mârk,
I'm a Heinz 57! LOL I am Spanish (Spain), Chinese, and Filipino mix. Sometimes I wish I inherited more of my Chinese side for straight hair. But no...Instead I ended up with multitextured, coarse, thick, hairs. On my motherside is the Asian side, most of the men cannot grow full beards but can grow hair really fast. My father side is the Spanish. The men on that side have full thick beards with thick curly hair. I like to envision my grandfathers looking like conquistadors. LOL So yes, I'm just one screwed up mixed breed. hahahaha
Thanks for your suggestion. I think i'll maintain this style. It might be hard, I guess I'll adjust the blade settings. Thanks so much!
cheers,
rowie
Hi rowie,
Hmmm, that is quite a mix but hopefully you inherited the best genes from each one of those ethnic groups:)That would make you one unique individual.lol.Sounds like you'll have a great mane and the facial hair does look cool in my opinion:)Can't wait to see the full picture of you, your hair and everything else my friend;)Cheers my friend.

You could create a goatee out of that or even have a tidy short full beard. There appears no issue and you have options.
Thanks! Good to hear I have options. I'll just have to have fun exploring options.
Cheers,
rowie
I think it looks great the way it is now. Alas, we are always our own worst critics. Think if it were myself, I would give it a few more weeks and see where it is then before making a decision.
Also, please remember that facial hair for a younger guy can be a bit of a guessing game for a while because the amount of facial hair for many in the early years varies greatly. Nationality can also play a part as well as genetics. A more fuller and filled-in look can take some guys up to something like the age of 25 to acquire, and yet some can grow a full blown beard by age 17 easy.
All the best-
Justin~
Thanks Uncle Justin! Your advice has been really informative! I've just been itching a lot lately, and I'm sure it will pass in a few weeks.
best,
rowie
Hi rowie,
My opinion is that your beard & 'stache look hands-down TERRIFIC -- but hey, I'll admit to being a bit prejudiced on this subject.
To me, a beard & mustache goes just as well together with long hair as salt & pepper at the dinner table, mustard & ketchup on a burger, sugar & cream for coffee or tea, bacon & eggs for breakfast, or fresh tomatoes & basil for a summer salad... you get the picture! Long hair with a beard & mustache are just a classic combination, regardless of however Mother Nature has gifted you with where or how much facial hair you have or don't have...
As the old saying goes, "Don't sweat the small stuff!" Justin also said it very wisely when he mentioned that we are all our own worst critics; so don't worry about too many of the details re. which style of beard & mustache looks best on you -- just feel free to experiment a little, trying longer VS shorter facial hair, goatee VS full beard & 'stache, etc.
Heck, I'm still experimenting with my own facial hair -- and I'm 58 years old!! Just live life to the fullest, and last but not least: have FUN!!!!

PS - I didn't realize that you are originally from the Bay Area, and that you also mentioned missing the Berkeley Rose garden... OMG, are you a fellow rose fanatic like me? I planted and maintain a rose garden in the East Bay town of Castro Valley, at a small nursing home where I cook (my paid job). I might even share some of my pics from there soon, if that's OK with others here at MLHH.
Hi Ken,
you are so right about having fun and experimenting with different styles. It's good to know some of you guys feel the same way I do about the beard being like "mustard and ketchup." I just feel I'm at a time in my hair growth where I need to heighten my masculinity, especially since I like to bun my hair. Your words have been very inspiring and I now I have the courage to try out different things.
many thanks and take care,
rowie

Hey Guys,
Thanks Scott! It's nice to have support from all you guys!

The secret is to just stop trimming and cutting. Multiple winters ago I wanted more insulation on my neck while riding my bike to work. At the time I was trimming my beard to about three fingers long (2 inches) Now when braided it reaches my pubic hair (see?). Most of my beard hair is on the chin area and almost none on the neck line so it makes for a thin looking beard but the length distracts from that. Included here is a family friendly photo of the beard unbraided. With your lack of grey (Ain't youth grand?) what you grow should look nice and thick so don't worry that it doesn't seem to be fully connected to all the other areas yet.
