One example of a show to live up to the stereotypes of Hollywood in regards to gender is the show Alcatraz which imho was probably the best new series this year!
the two leading roles are Detective Rebecca Madsen , portrayed by Sarah Jones and Dr. Diego Soto, portrayed by Jorge Garcia.
what is so unique about this show for starters is that Jones has a short Bob style, while Garcia has long hair generally worn in a ponytail. also, he is a bit on the overweight side.
both of these two actors defy the typical Hollywood gender stereotypes which are quite prevalent these days.
look at any number of CW series including Vampire Diaries and all of the females are generally long haired while all the males generally have short sleek hairstyles.
anytime, a short haired female or long haired male appears on these shows they usually have bit parts and their duration on the show is for a short time.
anyway, Fox decided to cancel it.
I guess they figured that you can't sell a short haired leading lady and her long haired portly side-kick to the masses.
it's all about image. a decent show like Alcatraz doesn't stand a chance in this day in age because the masses have been sold an "Image" with Ken And Barbie steretypes portraying the roles of various characters who often lack any real talent and anything that does not conform to that stereotype will not be popular.
Fox cancels Alcatraz
I've never seen the show.
That having been said Fox has a long tradition of killing a
show before it finds an audience, and without advertising it.
All too often Fox has great shows like Firefly, Tru Calling,
etc. they have no clue how to sell to the public, they don't advertise it, and kill it unless it get American Idol type
ratings the first week.
I enjoyed the show, but I mean where could they have gone with it? The main character dies right at the end of the season (series) finale.
