I ran across this and wanted to share:
"The Beatles' second appearance on February 16th, 1964, was broadcast from The Deauville Hotel in Miami Beach, Florida.
hard to believe that anyone would consider Beatle hair in 1964 long.
for you guys old enough to have watched it, how long would an all male band have to wear their hair today to get the same types of reactions from people that the Beatles did upon their arrival to America in February 1964?
A)Shoulder length
B)Mid back length
C)Waist length
D)Butt length
RockandRollFan,
Yeah the Beatles hair in'64 is short compared to todays standard but really was quite long compared to the "normal"(usually enforced by parents)"Butch" or "Crew cut". Basically a "Buzz cut". btw The Beatles music changed as quickly and radically as their hair did! (E),D and longer to answer your survey!
peace, jonalbear
It ain't just the hair; it's the hair plus the radical music talent and overall image. The hair was merely a side-effect. No matter how long their hair - whether buzzcut or knee-length - if a band today in 2012 were as phenomenal as the Beatles were in 1964, people would copy the way they looked.

I would point out there were a number of factors that lead to
the Beatles success and influence;
1. Rock music became very popular. Onf of things that drove this popularity was the movement by some to ban rock music.
2. There were enourmous protests against the Viet Nam war and the draft.
3. The civil rights movement was gaining momentum.
4. And finally you had television was proliferating
in homes. Through TV you had the Viet Nam war, the civil rights
movement, and the Beatles brought into the living rooms of America every day.
I have serious doubts whether another "Beatles" could come along
in 2012 and acheieve the success they did.
Remember too alot of their success came from radio air plsy. That radio air play is now gone. Many of those stations are
now talk/news/sports stations, MTV and VH1 no longer play music,
vinyl records are now history, cassettes are also hi8tory,
CDs are also going to be history, music now comes on MP3s. The result is a world where a new act finds it difficult to make
it big.
I disagree. if you compare some of the early Beatles and Stones recordings to what American groups were doing at the time there was not much difference. sure, the Beatles did revolutionize pop music, but their remake of "Twist and Shout" was a much bigger hit than the original as so was the Stones version of "It`s all over now" and I believe that the longer hair was part of what made these bands more successful than their American counterparts at that time and thus the reason many American groups starting wearing their hair longer.
imho, you can't have Rock and Roll without the hair. a guy might be able to play a mean AX with a shaved head like Joe Satriani, but it's not the same thing. it just doesn't look and feel right.
for a band to come along today and even come close to the success of many 1960s British bands they would have to have some length of hair. I would say much longer than shoulder length.
waist length would be optimal length imho for a modern rock and roll band.
As someone how was inspired to grow his hair long by the Bestles
it was considered long and radical at the time.
As someone who has lived through many years since that fateful
day in 1964 when I saw the Beatles on TV i'd have to say you'll
never get another act that will equal the influence of the Beatles.
Forget about the music for a second and focus on "society`s" reactions regarding the Beatles and stones hair in 1964
obviously it was considered quite long by "societal" standards of that time, but would not be considered out of the ordinary today and would be considered normal by society and short by the standards of many of you on this board.
what do you think would get the same type of reaction as far as hair length on young Men today?
There is no length today that would elicit the same reaction.
It's been done in past years. Between the 60s 70s and 80s
it's all been done.
