Note the comment by Mike Douglas when he states that the stones got
"The Beatles in the hair department" and asks how long long hair had been fashionable in England and Mick responds with "four years".
also , the question Mike asks "what are the barbers doing over there?" may sound a bit narrow-minded by today's standards and I can't imagine a host asking such a question today, but this was 1964 and Americans were not used to seeing guys with hair over the ears yet and to my knowledge Mike Douglas was a very liberal guy for that time so I do not think he intended on offending them.
apparently England was way ahead of the curve when it came to style then the U.S. which seemed to be stuck in the 1950s by comparison. that would of course change within a few short years as more young Men grew their hair out, first over the ears and eventually to shoulder length or longer.
imho, I think an all male band would have to have around waist length hair today to even get the same types of questions raised.
shoulder length to mid-back range is not a big deal especially if you're in a band and people have come to expect it over the past 40+ years so when guys first appeared in bands with shaved heads that was a bit unexpected, but hopefully we'll start seeing some really long manes again in pop music among the male performers.
anyway, check out the clip and enjoy and keep on rockin` and keep the long hair healthy and do not go short!
