For some reason, I see a lot of people replying to threads, and posting a completely unrelated picture of themselves. To me it just seems a little narcissistic, but I don't know if I'm alone in that. Is that considered an accepted thing around here? I don't mean to offend anyone, I'm just truly curious.
I'll post a picture of myself if it illustrates the topic at hand. To just establish who I am, the avatars are for that. Especially, few men want to see the same picture over and over except the small avatar.
The software is set up so a visitor can click on an avatar and see the man's web page. If you click on mine above, you can see all the pictures of my gray old mane that you could ever want to see.
My 2¢....
Bill
This is exactly how I feel.
If they got it, let them flaunt it. Nothing wrong with that.
Part of the problem may be that it seems like there is no response to requests to join the Users Directory and thus get an picture/avatar. I have tried a couple of times over the last several months and nothing has happened. (Sorry--could not resist attaching a picture ;-) )
On the contrary, applications are usually processed very quickly. You are doing something incorrectly. The form is here:
Application for the Users' Directory
Good to see you! I don't know if you're a dad now, but just in case congrats!
cheers,
rowie
Hi rowie,
Yes, I've been a dad since January. :)
It's quite the experience so far, really incredible. Here's a family photo from a few weeks ago.
A superb photo Jason, congratulations! If that's self promotion, lets have lots more!
Thanks for the kind words, Ian.
Hey Jason,
Great looking family :D ! Is fatherhood everything you expected it to be, or even more ;) ? I remember the early morning wake-ups threw off my clock so much that I didn't know which way was up :p hah!.....
Enjoy ^_~ !
Sincerely,
yoshiki
Hi yoshiki,
Thanks. Well, there's really no way to fully prepare for being a parent. It's definitely a wonderful experience but it can be challenging at times too for sure. It's incredible how life now is totally baby-centric!
Best,
Jason
The little one looks bemused by the picture taking!
Yeah, he was quiet just long enough for the session!
If he's a boy, can you give him the gift of having him grow his hair out long?
And teach him good hair care.
My son will have the privilege of wearing his hair however he wants, something that I feel is a right and that was denied to so many of us.
That's admirable, and I applaud you. However, what will you do up to the point where he is able to make decisions for himself? I don't think I was capable of making choices of that sort before the age of five or possible four.
My wife and I have decided on no haircuts! We'll at least be seeing how it goes but up until he can decide for himself, why not have him be a longhair?! :)
I have to confess I have seen nothing wrong at all.
Narcissistic? Moi? :)
Hey, this is a board about long hair. Sure there's billions of reasons for wanting long hair but for some us our appearance is gonna be a factor. And that means just a little bit of good old-fashioned vanity!
I can't help it if I just happen to be stunningly beautiful! :)

wow your hair looks great!
Hi TMK,
The tiny pic of myself that you see in the upper left hand corner of this reply to you is informally referred to as my, "avatar pic" -- if you read Jason's reply to "Never2long", you can fill out the application to be in the User's Directory yourself, resulting in you having your own avatar pic every time you type in your e-mail address whenever you post a new thread or reply to an already existing one.
This doesn't mean that on occasion some of us aren't guilty of a little narcissistic behavior at times (LOL); but in this case, if you are referring to this small photo every time I reply, in that case it simply happens automatically every time I include typing in my e-mail address while responding...
Clear as mud? (LOL)
Avatar photos are simply a way that other users can connect a face (and hair) to a regular user's name... Example: "Oh! Ken in San Francisco -- oh yeah, THAT weird old geezer! Cool pic of his hair at the beach; but OMG, the way he can just babble on & on sometimes, just makes me wish he would simply shut up!!!" (LOL)
- Ken in San Francisco
("And there he goes again, as if we don't already knows where he lives -- OMG, these damn Californians, always bragging about their city or state!" - LOL)
Yeah, I understand the avatar pic, I didn't mean to refer to it. Thanks though!
I wouldn't call them "narcissistic." Rather they are often images
relevant to the topic of thst thread. And where this is a site
dedicated to long hair on men you'll always be on topic
posting photos sf men with long hair.
Sometimes there can be a relevant point - such as "this is how I looked at that stage", but I have to agree that there seems to be little relevance for some photos. It might not be purely narcissism, though, as some of the less traditionally designed boards encourage quite detailed signatures including photos, so maybe some posters are filling what they see as a gap.
"...I'm just truly curious..."
Interesting observation, TMK"
This is a fairly close-knit community (not cliquish). During "conversations", some guys are also adding photos in the sense of "Oh yes, and here is what my hair looks like now".
I really do not think Promotion or Narcissism is implied.
Thanks for bringing an interesting topic to the board.
