Marks theory has merit. But I also hold that fear comes into play. Not fear of you,per se, but fear of the different, the unique. the independent. It upsets a lot of peoples "applecarts" and they act as if someone has moved their water dish. Funny and sad, simultaneously. keep your distance as they are not true freinds. and wvwen then, the forward thinkers of such a crowd may well wish to keep your friendship. Those are also true friends.
I never had this problem with friends. I got complaints from teachers, parents, employers many years ago, but not friends.
All of my friends were very supportive. But then I always was a rule breaker and so were my friends. If we went to a night club/bar/restaurant and they had a dress code of proper dress/no jeans/no shorts/no sneakers/etc. I always broke the rules and wore
what I wanted. Many of my friends did too and we always still got in with little hassle.
Ultimately it comes down to picking your friends well.
