Hi all,
July's here and I'm a little... um, raising an eyebrow? I know it took João David seven years to grow out his hair to classic length and I know as Ian had once said that one needs to compare your current hair's progress to the previous months. I did get a trim last month, but looking at this month's photo, I should see a little progress, shouldn't I :p ? Looks like I'm stuck in neutral over the past three/four months or so ~_~ .....
My hair does look a little more filled out than last month, but could it be possible that I've reached my own terminal length @_@ ??? I've been doing quite a bit of shedding lately, but still - what do the guys here on the board who have been growing out their hair longer think... am I just aiming too high or am I just overreacting :p ???
Oh well, a little disappointing, though... I was just hoping to see a little more go down the back ~_~ .....
Anyways, everyone stay cool in this heat :) - it's a hot one out there ^o^ !!!
Sincerely,
Eric
It takes a lot of patience to grow your hair. Rememember that
your hair on average grows a half an inch a month.
That would be two months to grow an entire inch.
Add to that a trim and it will take longer to grow.
Maybe you lost three/four months growth with your recent trim?
Hi Long Hair In Albany,
I'm not sure how much I lost in my last trim... maybe half an inch at most, but it's like you and others have said - I just need to have some patience :p . High dreams of a mane flowing down my back can't come soon enough ^_~ ! Only time can deliver ~_~ heh.....
Sincerely,
Eric
Looks good, do you have this months ponytail pics? Keep it growing
Hi Josh,
Sorry about last month >< ... I didn't get a picture taken, then in the middle of the month I accidentally posted the picture from May @_@ ! Ah well, my wife's off my case for now ~o~ .....
Here's this month's including a photo of something I did for fun a day before - similar to one of the first things rowie did with his introduction to this board... (kind of a bad) double ponytail :p . It's all in a low ponytail now, thankfully :D ~
Thanks again for asking ^^ !
Sincerely,
Eric

Hey Eric,
As a wise man told me several times - (and that was my father) - be patient; true to yourself; work hard and be kind to others. That was great advice for personal growth, but had little to do with my hair! :o
Your hair looks awesome and your pic updates show that!
Give it time and be patient. Maybe not just in the sense my father meant. ;)
John
Hi John,
Your father's a wise man - a wise man, indeed :D ! I'm usually a pretty patient person... but oddly enough I've found that I'm pretty particular when it comes to my hair :/ . Maybe because I wanted long hair for so long :p ? Who knows - I should just sit back and enjoy the ride ;) .....
By the way, we'll be heading out to Estes Park this weekend :D . What's the weather like out there, not counting the all of the fires ~_~ ???
Sincerely,
Eric
Hi Yoshiki,
Seeing your most recent photo it does not appear that you are anywhere near terminal yet. Your ends still look thick. With wavy and curly hair it takes a bit longer for length to appear noticeable and only after some significant length of say 12 inches or more which helps to stretch out the wavy/curly hair. From my own experience it took me a good 3 years before I could say my hair was seriously long. Trims can slow hair length down as well. I think you could grow to waist in time. keep the faith!
Cheers,
Duncan
Hi Duncan,
I'm tryin' to keep the faith, I'm tryin' ^o^ ! I do see what you mean about the curly hair part... I took a bigger strand that hangs around the front part of my shoulder, pulled it down a bit and it stretched (is that the right word >_< ???) three inches longer or so :o ! Didn't expect that... no wonder my hair on the front part of my shoulders seemed like it was going no where :p !
Actually, by initial panic was from a Photoshop file I keep. Each month after I take a picture, I superimpose the newest one onto the previous one (adjusting the difference of distance from the camera in each photo, etc.) to see progress made. Usually I can see a little each month (since I never measure my hair length ~_~ ), but in this last photo, it actually looked like I lost progress :p hah! So yeah, it might be the curls talking hold ^_~ .....
Onto next month, we'll see what brings :p ~
Sincerely,
Eric
Hi Eric, It's always a bit frustrating when your expecting your hair to look longer every month - a bit like waiting for the kettle to boil! Everyone's hair takes a rest break now and again, then a new spurt of growth. Your hair is very curly at the ends which also appears to slow growth. You have a great head of healthy, thick hair which is certainly growing at a steady pace - check out your pics from 6-months ago! Be patient, hold back on the trims and enjoy!
Hi Ian,
As always, words of wisdom :) ! Ah, it's a little hard to watch that pot boil :p - that was a battle I was never going to win ever since I was little ~_~ heh. Curly/wavy hair is ok, but not as nice when it comes to seeing progress, such as a straight-haired individual like yourself ^_~ . You're right, enjoy the ride... now pot, boil >:p !
Sincerely,
Eric
It is difficult to know if that is your personal terminal length but even so, it is fine looking hair and certainly something you can enjoy for many years to come.
Hey UK,
Hopefully I haven't reached terminal yet @_@ ... but yep, hopefully for many, many years to come ^_^ (as long as I get my way ;D ~)!
Sincerely,
Eric
Hi Eric,
Yep, you are definitely over-reacting -- as well as your expectations of the rate of how fast you'll experience hair growth is a bit too high!
The fact that you recently had an inch or so of your hair trimmed at the ends is the only thing that has set your hair growth back; but no worries, as your hair looks great... You just need to be more patient, that's all.
Finding your own terminal length is one of those things that you'll need to allow a lot of extra time to wait & see if it's really holding true or not. For example: if you look at the pic of the back of my head (as seen in the thread that I just posted on the topic of living in San Francisco's natural air-cnditioned climate), my current hair length looks about the same as in that pic taken in Sept. of last year -- with maybe only an inch or 2 more of additional hair growth since then. And yet, the only trimming I've done since then is trimming off individual split ends, using the "Search & Destroy" method (rather than trimming all of the ends off, losing and inch or 2 every time I do so)...
In other words, I believe I am at or very near to terminal length; but I'll wait a couple more months to see for sure, just in case I'm wrong...
Hair density (AKA "thickness") also thins out as you look at an average person's length of their mane, being much more sparse as your eye travels down, eventually trailing off into "fairy-tale ends" -- which is NOT at all what I see happening in your case (which is GOOD news, since that means you can grow your hair a lot longer, if you wish to)!
In any case...
your hair is looking TERRIFIC, Eric, keep it growing!!
"Onward & Downward!"
- Ken in San francisco
Hey Ken in SF,
You certainly put my mind at ease when you mentioned hair density... that's another thing I had thought about maybe once in the back of my head but hadn't really at all :p . As much as I pull out my hair or as much hair I loose, it's still in pretty good shape, I guess :/ (that was one of the things I was worried about when I Photoshopped and saw the ends of my hair go backwards compared to the previous month - thought more had come out than had grown :p ). Now that you mention it, things do look good, thankfully ~o~ . My first time around growing it out, after all ^_~ ...
...and yeah, expectations were a bit too high ~_~ . I thought once my hair hit my back, forward progress would be amplified and achieved... not so much :p ! Need to get past the curls, too ;) .
Nah, it's all good now. I've realized that seven years to go down is 84 places from beginning to classic ^_~ ... I shouldn't expect too much. *sigh* Still too bad that we all can't speed up our own personal hair growth, anyways :p ~
Anyways, onwards and downwards ^^ !
Sincerely,
Eric
By the way, I think your hair looks super great - great hair to fly around in a great city ^_^ !~
Hi Eric,
Well from my perspective I can say basically the same thing. My last professional trim was in August of 2005 and I know my hair back then was past mid back.So you'd think by now my hair would be to my knees!Sadly its barely at waist length and I know its growing based on new growth visible under my previously hennaed hair.So the big question is where is my hair going?I'm not trimming it so all that's left is shedding or breakage.Don't get me wrong as I love the length I've achieved but I would have loved to experience past the butt length hair at least once in my life.So all I can conclude is that each of us has a terminal length built into our genes. Some are lucky, such as Scott/Absolom or Trolleypup, who achieved impressive lengths. So just be happy, like I am, that I actually still have all my hair at my age and run with that my friend:)Cheers
Mârk
Hi Mârk,
True, very true, enjoy the hair :) ... in fact, in the past week or so I haven't been putting it in a ponytail here at home - I've just been combing and letting it hang down :p . I usually kept it in a ponytail because that's the way my wife prefers it and I don't have to go out as much as I used to now that I'm technically "self-employed" >_> . Starting to like the feeling of letting my hair hang loose :D . When I was over at two different Sally's Hair Supply Stores, the ladies working seemed to take notice, which I thought was... different :/ (?)...
Who knows, if I get as lucky as you and get to your length, shorter or longer (whatever I have programmed into me), I'm as happy as a lark to get as far as I have with my hair (never have been longer :D !) and I'll run with it all of the way, I promise ^_^ !
Take care ^^ !
Sincerely,
Eric
Hi yoshiki,
Personally, I think that your hair looks excellent, with nice thickness, and the ends also appears to be in good condition. I am sure you will be pleasantly surprised, and will be able to achieve considerably more length.
I do know that I am quite discouraged with mine these days, since it is essentially not growing at all, and I think I need a trim to neaten up the ends.
Keep it growing,
David
Hi David,
I'll say this for sure... growing out hair, like so many say, is a journey and is an interesting journey at that :p ! I'm looking forward to the future path to come, whatever it may be ^_^ (surprises included :D)!
I think your hair looks great - great color and it looks nice 'n thick, too :) - I don't see much to be disappointed about! I'm not givin' up so you don't get so discouraged either, ok ^_~ ?
Sincerely,
Eric
I remembered when my hair was your lenght and thoight it wuld never get lomger. I told myself to quite thinking about it. Now I have been told I am known as the guy with the longest hair in my city! It has seemed to have some weird growth spurts after classic length, and today it hsngs 4 inches below my ass. I am going for terminal lenght for the fun of it.
I tell 'ya, Piratemale, you have great-looking hair, there's no denying that :D !!! Hopefully with a little more patience I'll get a little further down the road - or my back, I should say ;) !
Sincerely,
Eric
