Its been a few years to get my hair past my ass. Today my wife pointed out I did not get any colds or flu this past winter. I realized that I dont remember beimg very sick the year before either, but the previous years before, I was getting some colds and flu. Some how my long hair is improving my physical health. Has anyone else noticed a stronger immune system?
My immune system has taken a kicking so far this year. One bout of flu in Feb, and my first experience with bacterial pneumonia in May-June. I do not think that long hair plays a big role in protecting the immune system. Hair and Beards can cover the face and protect it to some extent as warm insulation around the head to throat area. Probably having a good diet and clean living (less drinking/smoking), a strong constitution and living in a home free of dust and staying away from smokers breathing their germs around I think are helpful more then how long your hair is.

Now that you mention it, I've only had one upper respiratory infection in the last six years, and I usually get a bad cold every year. I'd be hard put to come up with a model to explain the correlation, though.
No.
I think that your suggested connection is highly unlikely.

I have had worsening breathing problems in recent years. My lung function was far better before I grew out my hair.

While it IS a nice idea, I don't think there is any cause and effect due to your hair. I have more health problems now than before, but that also isn't due to hair. I caught swine flu 2 (...or 3... somewhere around there) years ago, and I smoke now, so my health is worse than it was in 07 when I last got a haircut.
Good topic ! Thanks for bringing it to the board...

For many of us, as we begin our longhair journey we are more conscience of our appearance and will begin a more healthy diet and exercise regime. I have noticed many of our members slim down and buff up over the years.
Of course some of the older members just fall down and rough up over the years ! Ha!
I tend to doubt there's any direct correlation but perhaps there is a link between caring for one's hair and one's body in general. During my first few years of having long hair my health declined because of putting on weight from eating a poor diet and not exercising enough. Fortunately, I started to correct matters two years ago and feel way better for it. Now, I find it's even more enjoyable to have long hair with a healthier and leaner physique.
After losing 40 pounds!
Jason;
Well done on your weight loss and physical conditioning....
Well Done !!

I also have lost 40 pounds, but it just left old sagging, wrinkled skin !! Ha !
Hey thanks, Walter! Congrats on your own 40 pound loss!
I think that most people that grow their hair usually take more vitamins and lead a healthier lifestyle so that their hair will be healthier. This results in generally being healthier. However long hair in it of itself won't make one healthier.
Actually, not really. I'm still having a really annoying time with a severely swollen lymph node at the back of my nose, causing an absolutely horrible post nasal drip.
But other than that I'm fine.
I think the connection between long hair and health has to do with the reduction of stress that arises from being at peace with your appearance. If you had short hair but really wanted it to be long, the constant sense of disappointment can stress you out enough to take a toll on your health. I experienced this after I cut my hair short. I was so distressed and full of regret, and because of the stress I got sick all the time. My health is better now that I'm happier with my hair and myself.
