Hello everybody,
well, it's now about 8 years since I started growing my hair. I'm now 23 years old and when I was 15 I went into metal music very much. My hair is now about 125cm long, which means it reaches half of my thighs and I'm not happy with it anymore. It's not in that good condition it looks like - I spend most of time in bath combing it and it's very exhausting.
Last year I started something I missed in my life for the last 13 years - Karate and in general sports. Needless to say that having such long hair is such a pest when doing sports.
I feel very disturbed by my long hair and I don't do anything than washing it once a week or sometimes once in two weeks, trying to comb it every morning which isn't possible anymore because of it's attitude and bun it until going to sleep.
I don't want to put so much time in it anymore. Sure, years ago I definitely wanted to have such long hair but as times change life changes. I have reached some goals, I'm beyond classical length and yeah - my hair is only growing longer, looking more bad from day to day and I'm also more unhappy. In my mind I got farewell to my hair already - I have other premises in life now. I'm not that much into metal music anymore, I'm not in the hair growing scene anymore, I've got an job and I want to enjoy life without limiting myself - for example: I haven't slept on my back for years now. I'm not able to do crunches on my gym mat properly because I'm afraid of damaging my hair when laying onto my bun. Sure I'm gonna miss something but I'll definitely not going to miss the 8 hours of drying every sunday, hair all over my apartment and my clothes and physical limitation due to my hair.
So my decision is to cut my hair back to tailbone length or hip length in winter because there's no other possibility wearing it in anything else than a bun and cut it short in next spring.
It was a nice time having long hair and I know I would have went crazy one year ago if I had to think about cutting my hair short but as life changes, things change. I'm way more positive now and I want to remove negativity from my life as much as possible, I want to go for some workout and don't want to look ugly anymore with that frizzy hair.
I now know that I'm able to grow my hair to such incredible length but I don't think there's anymore reason to have it that long.
What do you think about it?
Regards and sorry for not being passionate about my hair anymore. I'm 23, I cannot live like that for some more years...
Hey Dusk, I totally understand that things change over time and if you would be happier with shorter hair then I am all for that. I've been keeping my hair around mid back length for about 6 months now and don't plan on growing it any longer. Do what makes ya happy dude. :)
I agree with Mak here. You gotta do what makes you happy. If you cut it and decide you made mistake, you can always grow it back. Suggestion: you can also just cut half of it and see if that does the trick of getting it out of your way.
whatever you decide, i wish you luck with it
Hi Dusk
Tail bone or hip length is still really long, do what makes you happy :)
Dave
i would be happy to have my hair get to hip or tail bone length. i can't seem to get it to my nipples, 5 inches away. tail bone or hip length is really long to me.
Dusk,
Oh man, I'm one of your fans >< ! I was wondering why you weren't around here much anymore (saw you a lot when I first actively started posting on the board about year ago). While I'd hate for you to cut your hair, I guess one would have to respect your decision... it's your hair and your life - you do what you want with it ;) .....
...but just out of curiosity, have you thought about cutting in moderation, i.e. mid back or just below the shoulders - making it look healthy again, so that you can do sports and lay on your back again :o ???
You have great looking hair... hate for it to all go :) .
Anyways, all the best to whatever you decide ^_^ !.....
Sincerely,
Eric
Hey Dusk,
Obviously this is a shocker as I always felt you had the most amazing hair on a guy. With that said I'm just looking at pictures so maybe I'm not seeing the whole story regarding damage and such.I would tend to agree with what was suggested by others that why not cut it shorter say,mid back or just below the shoulders. When you say short I think buzzcut which I find plain ugly and I only say that because you did ask what we think about your post.As for the music angle longhair can be associated with metal music but not exclusively.I'm sure if you asked many here a lot would say they don't listen to that type of music.Anyway it's your hair and your life and your freedom to choose how you prefer to look.Good luck in the future as your posts were always fun to read even though infrequent. I wish you the best.Cheers

I would mention several points here:
1. Ultimately it is your hair, you are free to do what you want
with it. But whatever you end up doing remember that trusty
two week rule. But it is your hair and it's entirely up to
you as to how long or short that hair length is.
2. You are only 23 years old, you hopefully will have many more
years on this planet. (I'm 57 and started growing my hair in 1964.)
I wish you good luck and good fortune in whatever you end up
deciding to do.
(I would mention that even with my long hair I still did numerous
athletic activities including running, mountain climbing,
bicycling, tai chi, etc. I never found my long hair kept me
from partaking in any of these activities.
Long hair is a pain in the butt! I can certainly understand your feelings about the extra work it takes to manage it. I've been growing my hair almost as long as you. It's not as long but I've had to reduce the number of washes I do just because of the time involved. For me, it's still worth it. I love the feel of my hair on my lower back. But for you, if you've lost that need for that sensation, then you need to do what will make you the happiest.
Take it in steps, Try cutting off 25cm at a time, see how that feels, then go for more if you still desire.
Good luck,
Bruce
Ha ha ha ! ;-)

Good suggestion, Bruce !
Like everyone else I considered your hair to be totally awesome.
But in the end it is your hair to do with as you please. All I
can suggest is that maybe you go shorter in segments. Maybe you
might discover that you like it at shoulder length rather than
no hair at all. It would be a shame for such awesome hair as
yours to totally disappear from the face of the earth.
Hi ! Nice to hear from you !
Similar.

Not as long, but same "activity" ;)
Agree...
I fully understand you, and we have similar way of thinking.
Do what makes you happy !
Cheers,
Vivien.

before you cut all of it off, have you considered trimming it to mid back length? You would still have long hair and it would be super easy to take care of. Do give that some thought.

Yeah, what's left to say? I send out many thanks to all of you for being year-long supporters even if I haven't been that active all that time I've never forgot you all.
I think it's a good plan cutting it back to mid back-length or tailbone length. My ends will be healthier after that and it will be easier to handle then. Think that will happen in december. :/
Don't do anything drastic right away. Like others have said, trim it to a slightly shorter length first. I personally don't find shoulder, mid back, or lower back hair to get in the way of any sports. Look at the NFL. You will find players with long hair. It is your choice, but I would really think about it first.

Hello Dusk
What a damage, your hair is such awesome;
but i understand you, your desire to change your look, to turn a page of a part of your life, to make other things that don't imply the care of your hair that require daily much time ...
Do you not think that it's better to cut just a little (hips or butt) rather than to cut short; you have to be sure that you don't regret your definitive gesture. Good thoughts and all my sympathy for your choice
Regards
Patrick
I'd be lying if I said I didn't like your hair or want you to keep it, but it's your hair. Whether it be short or long isn't important to anyone other than you. What matters is that you still support the right for a man to have long hair. If short hair on yourself is what makes you happy, then I an happy that you plan to cut it.
Peace and love,
Billy
I agree with Jarvis just below me, as well as the others that have also replied have shared some excellent thoughts & suggestions.
Similar to what has already been said, I can summarize by saying the following: find yourself a comfortable "middle-ground"...
Extreme lengths are awesome to look at, and fun as hell at the beginning of the experience; but after the "hair honeymoon" is over, the everyday reality of how much work is involved in order to maintain such a mane slowwwly starts to sink in a bit more... Do you REALLY want to work that hard in order to have "to-die-for" hair?
Only YOU, and YOU ALONE, can answer that question; but the good news is that there are a thousand million different lengths & styles to choose from -- it doesn't have to be only a choice of one extreme (like floor-length) VS the exact polar opposite (a buzz-cut)!
Just take it slowly and carefully... If I were in your shoes, I'd start with only cutting off just an inch or 2 at the beginning; then if still unhappy and annoyed with that length, take off another 4 or 5 inches, bringing it up to maybe belt-length. Take your time. There's no reason to rush! it took you a long time to grow out this beautiful hair, even the professional hair-stylists (the good ones, at least) will give you the above advise.

I hear you Dusk! Sorry to see a great mane go for the time being.
Been there done that myself. Had long hair for most of my 20's and then kept it short for a awhile. I returned to long hair at age 40 and have not looked back since.

I can relate to you feelings, ultra long hair is very much work to care for.
I've cut my hair to, partly because of this but the main reason was traveling.
I'm growing it back now but not as long as it used to be, which is a possibility for you to? See what length you really like.
