Every time I try to do a segmented tail, my hair just gets stuff instead of free flowing like in hairfreaky's video below. I was wondering if any of you (particularly Scott since I know you have yours in a segmented tail often) knew any tips to make the tail more free and moveable as opposed to stiff and stick-like.
Thanks in advance,
Billy
Now I know some of it is due in no small part to the length of his hair vs. the length of mine. But I would think that being that I'm very close to classic length that mine would have some maneuverability.
And here's the important part that I forgot
Hi Jarvis,
I sometimes wonder over the same thing -- so am hoping Scott will eventually share his secrets for success!
I've had *limited* success myself whenever I decide on having a segmented ponytail for the day; but just realize that for some odd-ball reason, it doesn't always come together as easily as I assume it will, especially while I'm trying to arrange the distance between multiple hair-ties...
Try this method, though:
In-beween each hair-tie, twist your hair a small amount to one direction; then after the next hair-tie lower, twist your hair in the opposite direction -- in other words: tie it off, then twist the hair to the right; tie the next hair-tie off, then twist your hair to the left... "ad nauseum" on down the length of your segmented ponytail.
Sometimes I think it might be the amount of hair in-between hair-ties that might be the big secret -- maybe I allow for too much hair in-between? (or instead, not enough??)
Until Scott or Hairfreaky answers this question, you & I and others here will just have to experiment more with this!

I do the segmented tail (or a braid) all of the time. I've noticed the tail will be stiff(ish) if I space the hair ties too close and/or wrap them too tight. A 4 inch spacing works good for me. Like Scott's, my hair is fine. Coarseness and waviness may certainly be a factor.

into the equation. Fine hair is more flexible and coarse hair will be stiffer. Mine is fine, about 65 to 70 microns, and yes, I measured it to check. (Average hair is 80 microns.)
Spacing also is important as well as how tight you tie it. I do about 10 cm intervals with somewhat loose ties. This allows for movement without stress on my hair.

I'll try looser hair ties. I've tried a variety of spacings from several inches to about an inch. I think my hair is fine, but it might be coarse. I'm not really sure. Thanks for the reply!
Peace and love,

If you have access to a microscope with a measuring reticle, you can know for sure what the diameter of your hair is. Measure several of your shed strands to see what the range of sizes actually are.
Here are approximate values for comparison:
For head hair.
extra coarse 120+ microns
very coarse 100 - 119 microns
coarse 86 - 99 microns
medium 76 - 85 microns
fine 66 - 75 microns
very fine 56 - 65 microns
extra fine 55 microns or less
Also, if you have bleached or dyed your hair it will be stiffer.
