I've been growing my hair out for the past 1 1/2 years or so, and lately the hair from the sides/back of my head is starting to make the whole thing look very puffy and messy. Does anyone have any experience with properly cutting the sides/back of your hair while waiting for the top to grow out?
I'd prefer not having to go to a salon since a)they'll take my money, and b)I want to know how to do it myself in general.
The good news: You already have a good look going with your hair as it is pictured here.
The other news: If that's 1-1/2 years' worth of growth, either your hair grows verrrrry slowly, or you're getting it cut/trimmed/styled far too often. Based on your post, I assume it's the latter. In my opinion, the people whose hair looks the best as it grows out are the ones who do the least to it. Don't worry about over-styling it, keeping every hair in place, slathering it with products, etc. Just keep it clean and conditioned, style it with a good brush as needed, and LET IT GROW. At some point, you'll have to accept that having wild, bushy hair is part of the journey, but know that if you're confident, it will look cool. Judging by this picture, you've got great hair to work with... that's all the style you need.
Good luck, and please keep us posted.

I think your over thinking about your appearance. Your hair looks great. One thing people who've worn short hair have to get used to is that longer hair can have a bit more freedom and flexibility than short looks. You don't have to have every hair in place all the time. Loosen up and enjoy it.
