I've been particularly impressed with the effect that long hair and full length coats bring. My dad said that he would buy me one.
Does anyone have any advice (color, material, etc)? Budget is upwards of $250, and if you can convince me, up to around $400.
Also, are there any other clothes that go well with long hair?
A few years ago I got a full length leather coat. I loved the way
it looked with long hair, I xtopped wearing it when i found out much it was to have it dry cleaned.
I have a black leather one that looks good with my long hair.
But more interesting is the support you have from your dad. It's good to hear about longhairs being accepted across generations.
I'll just go to say that it's a long story. Originally, my dad wanted my mom to have long hair. Now that I have long hair, he doesn't mind because he wants somebody to have long hair in the family -- and my mom no longer has long hair.
My mom's the one that's constantly complaining. Dad's dad and mom are quite impressed that I'm able to pull off the look, so I don't think that Dad's complaining. However, since he has to play along with Mom, he sometimes makes weak protests. I got him to get me hair ties in exchange for getting my senior picture taken (again, the problem is with the school admin.)
I go to church, and apart from the "pastor"'s wife and a few other middle aged women, I never really got any flak for my hair. I just came back from a relatively strict church retreat (more accurately called an intensive study session), and even though the dress code was semi formal, I never got any flak for having long hair. Also, I didn't have to wash my hair at all during that week, and it was a bit greasy but not unbearable or bad looking.
On the other hand, school's a lot more intolerant. Nearly 90 percent of the criticism comes from a few female classmates at school. Really, me going to school could be compared to a lamb staying amidst a pack of wolves. (Too strong of an analogy?)
I love trench coats. Check out thrift stores or eBay. You can find some nifty stuff for well within your budget. I have a couple of 1960's military trench coats I found in local thrift stores for about $20.

Yeah, you can get a military trenchcoat, if you like the style, real cheap. I have a green US military trenchcoat from the Vietnam War in great condition that cost maybe $20 on ebay.
I'm a dirty blonde, so I learned the hard way that I don't look very good in black. Though this bright sandy shade of brown seems to suit me well.
I've posted this pic before, I know, but it's 90°F out and I don't want to put a coat on for that.
By the way, guys: since I'm soon heading off to college and would like to put my own wardrobe together once I've found a decent part-time job, please, PLEASE include pictures and store links. I'll be indebted to you.
OP, trench coats are typically better, at least nowadays, for formal outfits, while dusters are better for more casual wear. Trench coats, in their prime years, would have been placed over business attire, along with a matching fedora, and act as an anti-weather measure. Dusters were extremely popular among cowboys and open-top motorists for their rugged practicality. However, trench coats are more shapely and can thus be used in a greater variety of styles, whereas the duster is almost exclusively a Western phenomenon. (I, of course, love anything to do with the Victorian era.)
I think long hair looks especially good with a tailored frock coat, if you can get your hands on one.
