My doctor prescribed prilosec otc for my constant GERD. I read one of the side effects it may cause is Friggin HAIR LOSS! I read some chat roo s where some users claim to have had hair loss from prilosec. I am paramid of taking this product as my hair needs to be full and past my ass. Do you fellow long hairs know of any first hand info on someone getting bald from prilosec?
Hey PirateMale,
Why not ask your Doctor to instead prescribe you Pepcid (I'm not a Doctor, so I'm not recommending anything here ^_~ ), which also has a generic instead? Although it's an older drug, I'd say it's one of the better... I've been taking it for over ten years - 20mgs two times a day for my constant heartburn. Although heartburn and GERD are somewhat different, I did a quick Google search and Pepcid is a medicine that treats it... just need to ask your Doctor ;p .
Sometimes it seems like some Doctors like to prescribe the newest and most expensive medicines out there for some reasons, although there are older, cheaper, generic and sometimes just as good alternatives. Sometimes I think it has to do with all of those free notepads/samples/pens you get from the Doctor with pill and medicine manufacturer names on them, but then again what do I know?... I'm just the patient :p ~
Best of luck ^_^ !
Sincerely,
Eric
Hey thanks for the tip, ill look into that. Pepsid obviously has not caused u any hair loss!
I've had my own share of acid burning a hole inside me. I've had Prilosec (no hairloss at all), Zantac, Xexium, and often treated Tums like tic tacs (don't do that unless you want kidney stones). However as far as hair goes... it seems safe to me.
I'm no expert but when drug companies run their clinical trials before they get FDA approval, they test it on thousands... I think they're required to mention the side effects it caused during the trials, even if only 3 or 4 out 10,000 people were affected. If we all read the side effects and got scared drug companies would be broke. I always find drug commercials extremely funny in the U.S. at least. An old lady doing yoga outdoors with a huge smile on her face because her arthritis is gone, while the announcer keeps telling you the drug can cause stroke, sudden death, suicidal thoughts or kidney failure. I mean... and they still sell billions. I'd go with prilosec, then change your eating habits, avoid fatty or oily food, no sodas, no tomato sauce past 6 pm, and all that. Get well and stop taking it. Every artificial substance we put in our bodies is a potential risk. Even sulfates in shampoo can cause cancer (found that out recently, thankfully I switched to sulfate free over 2 years ago)
Thanks for your reply, you given me some solid advice, I appreciate that.
Don't want to frighten you, BUT ... I had a cousin who used to take TUMS with every meal for years. Turns out he had pancreatic cancer and he died a few months after he was diagnosed.
No worries buddy, as I said it causes kidney stones, after the very first time I got tiny ones I decided I'd go down a different road. Thanks for the heads up anyway.
Hi PirateMale,
I have been taking Prilosec for reflux disease going on 3 years now. I have not noticed any hair loss-thank goodness. Believe me, you will come to appreciate the benefits of taking Prilosec. I have not had any problems with acid reflux since taking it. Hopefully you will not experience hair loss. Keep it growing!
Ted
I've been on Prilosec for my GERD and IBS and have not noticed any balding or hair loss from it.
