Well today I had the honor of getting some exercise hiking with our own Scott/Absalom at Tilden Park near his home in Richmond.Scott being an avid cycling and hiking guy took me to task on the trails of that cool park.Thankfully I was able to keep up with him during that hike where we finally stopped for pictures on our way out as the fog was on its way in!LOL.So here am I trying to figure out the dynamics of this particular tree.

Still trying to figure out how this tree actually got the way it did.Very strange....

Scott also gave it his best shot trying to calculate what makes this tree tick.lol

That's just what very old California Bay trees do. The basal caudex/burl is usually started after the tree stump sprouts multiple times after fires, then expands with the growth of the tree in the absence of fire...usually the ones with the largest bases are multitrunked, and the base is often broken and hollow.

Yes, this tree is probably at least 300 years old with multiple trunks growing out of that huge basal burl. Here are images of Mark and that incredible tree. This one has a large "cave" in it.

Here is a closeup of the "tree cave" from a few years ago.

Hey Mark,
Here I am typing a reply to you on the computer at work, during the wee early hours of Sat. AM...
(Why the heck am I doing that???*!!*&%#!!!!***?)
In any case...
That's a really cool pic of a fascinating tree! Trolleypup gave you a wonderful explanation in his reply, so be sure to check it out.
It's been great having you out West here -- the only bad part about it being that I hate to see you leave!
Have a safe flight, and when you get back to NJ be sure and give me a call...
Take Care!
Long Lox 4ever,
Ken
Hi Ken,
Well as I write this reply I am doing it from home base back in NJ. Funny how every time I leave California I have this empty feeling that something special has been lost.Strange how I never feel that way when I'm heading out west and leaving NJ.Now I'll just have to think about my next return trip I guess;)
It's an honor as always to have met you again as well as all my other friends from the coast:)Even had the opportunity to make a new contact.
That reply by Trolleypup regarding that strange tree was very educational.Scott and I were trying to figure out how it got like that which certainly took many years to happen.Just chalking it up another California act of nature.
Thanks as always for your hospitality Ken as I always look forward to our meetups:)Cheers my friend!
