I know life's not fair, but... I just get really jealous seeing like the metal-head looking guys who can shower with only shampoo (no conditioner) and just let it dry and it looks perfectly straight and healthy. I had a friend with hair like this.
Mine is probably among the worst I've seen. I need to spend a while styling it to get it to look even somewhat decent. It's not straight, not exactly wavy or curly... "frizzy" is the only word describing it when I don't do anything to it, and I always use conditioner. I don't use chemicals on it anymore, and I haven't straightened it in a long time or used any heat. The slightest humidity causes it to go insane. It's not long enough to tie back fully yet, so I have to use gel or something similar for that, or have an awkward two ponytail look. Plus, there's awkward shorter pieces in some places. It tends to curl in random places, wave in some, be rather straight in others, really frizzy in some. It's different each time it dries too. The front parts curl upward and inward so awkwardly. I'll post a pic if need be. (And for those wondering: I'm white)
A brief history of my hair: kept it short until like 13 I dyed it. Then decided to grow it long... yeah, the ends, damaged from the bleach, always looked awful. Kept dying it until I eventually stopped. Longest it's ever been was where the back was halfway down my back almost, and the front... still could barely be tied back. It came loose frequently when I did. I don't know why the front pieces grow so slow, it's really annoying. Anyway, I cut that off (cut off everything that was dyed) and started fresh again. Then I dyed it again (I never learn). Grew that out for a year, cut it off in July 2011. That's the last haircut I've had. I'm assuming all the dyed part was again cut off. I have not used anything harsh on it since. I straightened it a few times, though.
Despite being more careful with it and trying not to damage it, it seems to almost look worse than it did in the past. It's always funny when girls said my hair was nice, they didn't realize I probably spent more time on mine than they did on theirs. I don't exactly know why my hair is like this... it could just be bad genetics. My parents' hair both looked bad, but I think mine is worse. I have a bunch of other bad things due to bad genetics... nothing too horrible, but honestly this is why I believed in selective breeding.
I really don't want a short haircut again. I always regret it when I do that. And I don't personally like how they look on me mostly. Then again, most people hate long hair on me, even people who normally like long hair on guys... I guess I'm just that ugly. Oh well.
Anyone else have this problem? Any tips? I really don't want to have to keep spending time on it or loading it with gel only for it to look sub-par.
I'm not sure if I have the exact same problem, but my hair isn't exactly aesthetically appealig in my own view. Then again, the worst critic you know is yourself.
Back when I was in middle school I had my phases where I would gel it into a spike with less than anticipated results. My hair is difference in the sens that I waves but once it gets to a certain length the end kind of...curls like a pigs' tail.
Although some of it can be blamed of lack of haircare and knowledge of it, but it usually is what's passed down. Not to say genetics is faulty but it what makes every person in their own right unique. You yourself may thinkg it's the worst style, but try to take a step back and analyze how it makes you different from the rest.
In my case, my hair was full of volume had liked to grow out into an almost afro-like state. It's the reason why I kept my hair so short in highschool because I thought it made me look incredibly awkward. After graduation though I gave it a shot with growing it out and after going through the long and sometimes agonizing process of the awkward stage my hair finally started to settle and kind of cling to my face.
Unfortunately I got it cut and it was getting past my shoulders (2 1/2 years give or take since it curled up and made it seem short even after so long, thankfully I was able to tie the front) and I'm 7 months in for growing it back out.
There are times where I definitely felt like shaving off all my hair because of how annoying and irritating the awkward stage can be, but what separates us with the other types is that we have the patience to let it grow.
My suggestion would be to let it grow and see what can be done with the front. Untill it's able to be tied in a ponytail you could use bobby pins to keep all the hair in the back and as close to your head as possible. I can definitely tell you Ii've been in that position more than once with how crazy my hair is but in the long end it WILL pay off for all the hard work.
Fortunately my hair has been long for so long I can't even remember what the awkward stage was like for me.Also my hair is dead straight so that's a plus as its easier to comb and brush out:) I know you are critical of your hair but why not post a pic of your mane so we can better judge and offer advice.Anyway glad you took the time to explain your situation as I'm sure you'll get the help you need here:) Cheers

Here is a (face censored) pic. This is after showering and letting it dry naturally- not touching it or doing anything to it. However, this pic was taken on June 7th- exactly 4 months ago. So needless to say, it's longer now. Anyway, I can't even go out of the house with hair like that. Usually after I shower, I either have to go to sleep right away (this flattens it out) or tie it back into two ponytails to make it look somewhat decent, but the ends always curl in weird directions. I'll take a new pic if need be.
Hi SleepyZZZ,
Thanks for posting your pic as that is a much better help in trying to figure out what you meant about your hair.Frankly I think it looks fantastic both the color and its shape:)Obviously I can't feel the texture but you could always treat it with ever so little bit of coconut oil which would give it more shine and smoother feel.Of course use it sparingly as too much would just make it go flat and look oily.I used to use that oil but stopped now as I only shampoo and condition twice a week.Kinda funny as I shower just before bed too and end up going to sleep with my hair still damp but it hasn't been an issue with me.If you wish to post a current pic that would be great even if you still don't wish to show your face.Truthfully it would be cool to see how your face blends with your hair but I understand if you'd rather not post it online being some guys are like that here.Anyway nice job, in my eyes, and hope you enjoy your hair because that is what makes guys like us unique:)Cheers my friend.

Friend,
Why cover your face. I think you look good in this photo.
I am much older than you and do have some hair loss. The hair on top of my hed grows more slowly, and falls out sooner. But I too have chaotic, unevenly curly wavy hair.
It is now long enought that I can comb it back, push the natural waves into place with clips -- not wave clips but the ones that stylist use to section your hair -- combe it back on the sides, and clip it against my head till it is almost dry. I use a variety of leave in conditioners, and a little lanolin based VO-5 on the ends.
However, determined to get my hair long -- now about 14" to 18" -- I followed the advice of a stylist who used large 1" to 1.5 inch rollers to set my hair, and paradoxically rolling my hair made it straght. The stylist who taught me that works on Saturdays, and sometimes I go to him for $15., however there is also a local cosmo college which charges $6. and cheap as it may sounds I always give the student a $2. tip.
They are open at 9: AM and do not take appointments after 3:00. I determine my own hours at work so usually go there about 9: and expect to get to the office at 11:00. I read the local paper, and whatever left overs from the previous Sunday NYT. They really like me, and usually I request a tried and true student, but if not available other students who have done my hair will come advise. I have learned the rolling pattern that works best for me.
Whatever the pattern, it is essential that the roller be firmly down to the scalp so there is no straight length of lead in to the roller which will guarantee a kink.
I am a masculine appearing man with short beard and moustache. I rather enjoy breaking new ground, but it took me a while to get comfortable using a service that has been traditional for women -- and now mostly old women.
But a tool is a tool, neither M or F, so if it works use it. I have also learned to roll my own hair and sometimes do when I am going to be home most of the day and it can air dry. I used to have a cheap hood portable drtier, but it burnt out and I will probably but another one before winter comes.

I think your hair looks great. I know if I don't do anything with mine and just let it dry its abit crazy. I pout mine in a tail for an hour or so and then let it out adn I also use whats called R&B Revive & Balance Hair Moisturizer from the Store Lush. It works great!!! You might want to try it if you can get it. I hope your well. but it all looks good to me
Honestly I think your hair looks pretty great - mine is a little frizzy too, especially right after I wash it, but to me it's not a big deal - and some water or gel would fix that.
You actually have really nice hair. If you let it grow longer, the weight of your hair will keep it from curling up. You most likely have some wave in your hair.
