Hi everyone :-)
I shaved my head about 3 months ago so I could start fresh (I've been dying my hair for 13 years and wanted it all natural) and let it grow without any trims. However I seem to be getting a bit of a mullet look at the moment...would it be best to trim the back and sides so there is more on the front before I leave it alone? Or does it sort itself out in a few months?
Just let it grow, the time to worry about trims is after about two years.
Yes Simon, just leave it alone. It may look awkward for a while but will grow out nicely given time! May have to use caps, bandannas or styling products to keep it from looking too unruly.

Hi Simon,
I would just let it all grow at the same time. From my experience the hair will even itself up the longer you grow it out. The dyeing can be a problem since it will be different colors as it grows out. You could just trim the old color off as you go to maintain the same color throughout. Mother Nature seems to be pretty smart so I would probably just let it grow. If you get any kind of cuts or trims you may regret it soon after. I know I have been there done that. I hope you decide to just grow it.
Take care, Ted
I would let it grow. The time to trim it is when you reach your
desired length, whatever that length is. You may find you don't need to even it out when you reach your desired length.
It looks better with the mullet look -- you end up having your hair down to your shoulders by 9 months, and it looks a lot better than the conventional awkward stage.
Thanks a lot for the replies everyone! That's good enough for me to leave it alone then :-)
Here's how it looks at the moment...it does get very thick and wavy at the back (it runs in my family) so that's why I worry about the mullet effect that'll start popping up soon lol
Hi Simon,
Thanks for posting the photo. I really think your hair is going to look great when it gets longer. I would let it grow for about 2 years and then see what it looks like. Of course, if you don't want it all one length you could cut it layered etc. Everyone likes different styles. Please keep growing.
Take care, Ted
I have never really understood the logic behind letting it grow to whichever length before you trim it.
Any hairdresser worth his/her salt will lett you to keep it trimmed if you want even, strong and healthy hair.
If you are really concerned about the hair looking slightly mullettish than by all means trim the back slightly with perhaps a bit more than slightly just behind the ears so that you get a shaped look.
However, I do agree with all that seeing your length at the moment, you should not need any trims for at least 9 months to a year.
I started with longer hair on top, but almost buzzed sides and b ack, but at around the 9 month stage, it did have a mullet type appearance. I waited another 5 months before I went to my hairdresser to get it trimmed.
Funny story at the hairdressers - there were a couple of guys with receding hairlines and buzzed short who started to taunt the hairdresser to lop all my hair off! Only for the reason so that they could have it to stick on their heads!!
But don't worry about any mullet at the moment. You have more to face with the awkward stages! Keep it up and 18 to 24 months will pass by so quickly and you will be a long hair with a decent length tail.
Because of you trim it it will take much longer to reach your
desired length. it's simple logic, if you want to grow your
hair then don't cut it. And no trimming your hair does not make it grow faster.
Remember hair grows at a rate of 1/2" per month, so trimming
6" means you lose a year of growth.
Besides i've had bad experiences with "hair stylists" who you tell to take off x inches and they go wild and take much more.
If i tell a stylist to take off two inches that means take off two inches, not eight inches, two feet, 14 inches, etc. Too many stylists have trouble comprehending that.
I beg to differ, mate! A trim is not 6" - That is a shearing!!
A quarter inch off every 3 to 4 months would ensure your hair keeps on growing healthy.
You or I may say a trim is a 1/4." A hair stylist would consider
a trim lopping off a foot of hair.
I've had too many bad expereinces with hair stylists. Too often they do what they want, not what the customer wants.
Unless you trim the front and top, it isn't going to look like a mullet. You might get some ill-informed people who say it does, but that's their problem because they will be wrong.
Hey Simon,
Awsome hair for three (3) months of growth.
My advise is to leave it alone and just let it grow. The mullet effect will eventually work itself out as your hair gains more volumn and weight.
Keep it growin, bro!
