Concurring with CEM.'s recent threads re. the longer his hair gets, the more he feels the importance of sometimes having to restrain it, here is a pic I posted 10 months ago (in early Jan. of this year), taken at San Francisco's Ocean Beach.
It was a moderately windy day that day; so for most of my beach walk, I had it twisted around into a basic bun (held together by just an average hair-tie) -- something I've learned to be able to do pretty quickly & easily by now.
I'll post a follow-up pic of my hair loose, taken on the same day at the same beach...

PS - Belated compliments to Jason for his amazing pic of himself at that beautiful Atlantic beach with his son, just a wonderful photo!!! Also a great pic of Hairreligion's recent trim showing his awesome braid -- and also to anyone else who has recently posted pics, I apologize for being away from the board here recently. In any case: my compliments for always seeing such great-looking hair here!
Here's a good example of what my hair looks like on a moderately windy day -- taken on the same day at the same beach as in the previous pic; but allowed to be loose.
As you can see, although fun for a few minutes or so, for those who have never grown hair this long, the reality of trying to untangle it if I never restrained it on days like this, is far different from the fantasy of having super-long hair allowed to be loose all the time.
Everybody's hair behaves a bit differently, as well as people have different "ideal" goal lengths (not to also mention different genetic make up re. what Mother Nature will determine as their ultimate terminal length, regardless of any hoped-for goals - LOL)....
It's all been a learning and humbling experience at times; but also of course, a fun-as-hell journey!
Happy hair-farming!

Hi Ken,
Now this is what I'm talkin' bout! Looks awesome, Ken! I love it! Keep it flowin'!
Take care, Ted
Hi Ken - I concur ... you ALWAYS say things so eloquently - your posts are pure pleasure & your hair is stunning ... PS: KNOTTZ R THE BANE OF MY EXISTENCE 2 !!! ... hehehe Cheers CEM. :))
.
WOW, thank you!! It's funny, isn't it? It's just human nature for one person to be envious of what another person has.... I'm jealous of your amazing hair, for example, while you seem to have the same thoughts over mine -- let's switch heads then, OK? (LOL)
Thanks again for the kind comments!

Hi Yomaku,
Wow! I just noticed your avatar picture! You have some awesome looking hair! Very good inspiration for me and I thank you for that. Please don't ever cut your hair! Keep it growin' and flowin'!
Take care, Ted
Thank you! although I'll have to shave it all in about a year or two, but enjoying what i have right now :)
Keep it growing yourself!
Hi again, Yomaku. I certainly hope you regrow your hair as soon as you can! Gotta do what ya gotta do, though.
Take care, Ted
Hi Ken,
I always look forward to your updates and posts. Your hair is looking wonderful! I really like the color and the length is perfect. However, I am partial to letting the hair fly loose all of the time. Of course, I may not feel this way when I get some length. The photos are great-I really miss living in Northern California. I moved away much too soon. Keep on keeping on out there buddy.
Take care, Ted
Hi again Ted,
You are much too kind! Thank you though for your words of encouragement to continue growing -- I will I will, I promise (LOL)!!
When my hair was a bit shorter (like, for example, only shoulder-length), I greatly enjoyed having my hair loose as often as I could, maybe only wearing a bandana when I did landscaping and gardening work back then, or tying my bangs back into a half-tail to keep the hair out of my eyes. But in proportion to however mega-long it gets, you'll find it gradually helpful to restrain and protect it in more and more situations you'll encounter. This doesn't mean you still can't enjoy wearing it loose on occasion; just that you'll need to weigh the practical considerations of different events happening outside the home, and know the consequences (and in some cases, actual dangers) of deciding to wear your hair loose still as it gets gradually longer and looooooonger...
Thanks again for the nice reply!!
"Onward & Downward!"

The bottom line here is hair is vulnerable to damage,
be it knows, tangles, or even something it can get caught in or
be damaged by.
Hair is fragile, so if you want to retain it as long as your ultimate goal you need to take care of it and protect it from
various hazards. Just look cloasely at your surroundings and
you'll find many a hazard to you hair.
I love having my hair hanging loose, cascading down my back when
i'm not wearing a shirt. But the last thing I want to do is have to chop off a good chunk of length because a chunk of hair
got knotted by high wind, got caught in a doorway, or fell victim
to some other hazard. And yeah i've learned the hard way that
hair can sustain damage.
Hi Ken,
Sorry for the delayed reply. I was at dialysis today and I spend most of my treatment time resting. Some days I feel like I have run a marathon, but I have just sat in the dialysis chair for 4 hours. All of your points are well taken and I shall keep your advice in mind for the future. Please take care of yourself, and yes Onward and downward!
Ted
I'm also partial to letting my hair be loose all the time too but i'm also biased against getting my hair tangled by 60mph winds,
or getting it caught in thins it's not supposed to get caught in.
So out of necessity and safety I will, reluctantly, tie it up.
Hi LHIA,
I completely agree with you and apologize for the delayed reply. I have always liked your hair color and length also. I am going by your avatar photo, but maybe you will do a photo update in the future. How long is your hair now? Are you at terminal length? Take care and keep it growin' and flowin'.
Ted
Thank you.
Right now it is probably about 5 or 6 inches longer. Not really long enough to warrant a new photo.
I wish it was but it isn't. In the 80s terminal length was about knee length. But i found that to be too long to
handle.
Gasp ! What a terrifying title line Ken !! I was not sure what I was going to see when the photo opened....Ha !
Of course your hair up in a bun really looks sharp.....and what a beautiful color.....I think we could call it "Buns of steel" giggle
Thanks for Sharing
Walter
ROFL, "buns of steel", now that's a good one!!
And speaking of buns...
Eventually I'll post a pic showing the back of my hair as it looks nowadays, as the length has ever so slllo-o-o-owly crept slightly past "belt-length" -- it all depends on how far I tilt my head back or "stretch" the truth a little; but let's just say that if I haven't yet quite arrived at terminal length, maybe, just maybe, I can one day say I have "butt-length" hair!
Stay tuned (LOL)....
Alway great to hear from you, Walter!

1stly. - quite simply your hair is beautiful in every way - a true testament to a man who looks after it ... if mine could / would / should look half as good as yours - I'll be doin' just fine ...
2ndly. - thank you for your irrepressibly positive spirit - it is priceless here on the board ... nuff said ... (◡‿◡✿)
Thanks, CEM., I greatly appreciate your wonderful comments!
One of my "secrets" that has helped me maintain good hair care over the years is learning how to use beneficial oil on my hair ends, applying a small amount (no more than a coin-size) into the lower portion of my mane, followed by finger-combing it in and massaging it by twisting and twirling the oil throughout the lower half of my hair, helping to add moisture to where it's driest and oldest and suffered the most damage.
Olive oil is my current favorite oil for doing this (I also add a small drop of pure lavender oil in with the Olive oil bottle for a cleaner fragrance); but also Kukui nut oil, Almond oil, or Jojoba oil are all beneficial for hair.
I swear by it, beneficial oil has made a HUGE difference in how my mane feels and looks -- it's really solved the dry ends problem as well as frizzies or fly-aways, not to also mention cut down a bit on me getting as many split ends as I used to.

Hi Ken,
I love that picture and the setting it was taken in:)To think it was January and nice enough to go to the beach is amazing since you'll never do that here being so cold.lol.Great job on the bun and your hair looks fabulous in that shot.I've come to liking my hair stick restraint waaaay better than doing a ponytail. One nice thing about the pony is that it does show the length better though.Maybe it's the newness of using the sticks that I like. Still if it were practical I'd go with loose hair all the time:)Cheers my friend.
Mârk
PS: Today is my henna redo day so I'm all wrapped up at the moment;)lol
Hi Mark,
Thanks so much for the kind reply!!
I like sticks myself; but currently don't remember where the hell I put mine (I keep forgetting about them, I'm so used to just using a hair-tie to bun my hair nowadays - LOL)....
Re. Henna:
I'm thinking about putting Henna in my beard soon, but will probably leave the hair on my head untouched... we'll see, though!
Later, 'gator!
Long Lox 4ever,
Ken
Hi Ken,
My apologies for being so late to reply, but this is an awesome job with your bun, and your beach, "untamed look" is truly an example of long hair the way it was meant to be at its finest!
Keep it all growing,
David
