Need help trying to grow out my hair but its thick and frizzy , I'm used to a number 2 buzz cut.
Have a big nose so I look like a chicken ha ha
I want it to grow out but it seems to just poof up, at the moment I gel it and comb it back
When you get to be in your 30s, 40s, and especially into your 50s, you will look back on this photo and one day realize how truly good-looking you are -- no, you do NOT look like a chicken!! And your hair looks GREAT, in my opinion... just let it grow!!!
Re frizz: as your hair gradually gets longer and looonger, you'll find that by using more conditioner (after shampooing, first) and less frequent shampooing in general (which strips out all of the natural oils), there will be proportionately less frizz. Occasionally I do "Water-wash Only", or sometimes even "shampooing" with conditioner only, in order to give my hair a break (yet freshen up my scalp).
As far as the thickness of your hair goes: you are one lucky lucky dude!!!!!

Hey, I resent that! I'm over 30 and still look as breathtakingly stunning as ever! :D

What Damon! I had no idea you were over 30! As the band Rascal Flatts would say "you don't look a day over fast cars and freedom! You look stunning as ever!
Take care, Ted
Haha! I may not look quite so stunning after clubbing with my mates till 5AM last night - but the good times are definitely still rolling and I have absolutely no intention of ever growing up! :)

Hi "Doc Martin"
*Actually, your hair is looking to myself just fine and as it should look at in the very beginning earliest stages of the growing-out process. Since you are used to a #2 Buzz Cut, most likely you have never seen your hair this long in your entire life? So many guys say that their hair is "too thick." Later on down the road (and once it is much much longer) it will appear nice and full. By all means do not at this point go for any trims or thinnings.
*No way. Guess it is a normal thing that we are always our own worst enemy.
*Poofing out is 100% absolutely normal and happens to everyone at 1st, at least that I have ever known of or who has emailed me because of the Long Hair videos I once made with this very same complaint. Later on and when much longer, the hair on its own WILL settle down and all will look fabulous. It never fails. Takes alot of patience and some guys cave-in only to try again and then cave-in again. This is a true test of inner strength, but in the end, those that have made it are happy with their long hair. I have NEVER heard a guy comment: "That was the worst thing I ever did and am sorry I grew long hair." But I HAVE heard probably hundreds of times: "I regret cutting my hair and WISH I had just let it do its own thing and grow out."
Take care and as best as possible expect all kinds of wild looks and one of a kind daily looks for your hair for a long time now. This will make it way easier on you. Nothing to worry about and as have been said right here on this wonderful MLHH: "My hair is a work in progress."
Best of luck to you.
Justin~
Hi Doc,
I totally agree with Ken and Justin's comments. I started growing my hair again after cutting in 2011. My hair is very similar to yours and I experience the same poofiness you do. I was getting frustrated about the poofiness so I went to get a trim. Well, I let the lady layer the back of my hair to try ro reduce the poofiness. That was a big mistake because she just set me back as far as length was concerned. Now I have to grow out those layers in the back to get it closer to being even. Now that I have not had any trims my hair seems to be taking care of itself.
Right now I am just washing with shampoo about 2-3 times per week. I use only conditioner on the other days. This routine has helped me reduce the frizziness and also with the poofiness. Of course, as your hair gets longer I believe it will lay better for you. I sure hope you keep growing your wonderful thick hair to at least mid-back length. You would look awesome! No, I don't think you look like a chicken. You look like a cool dude ready to sport your long thick mane like you deserve and should! Hope this helps!
Take care, Ted
Your hair looks awesome to me! I wish my own hair was that thick instead of fine.
You're just into the "awkward stage" that's all. Once it grows longer the extra weight will pull the hair down and the poofiness will disappear. You just have to be patient.
Big nose? Nah, looks fine to me.

Wrong. Actually your nose is smaller than mine.
You should let your hair grow longer as others have suggested.
One thing i've found is my hair is more poofy on the day I shampoo and condition. The next day the poofyness is gone. This is with my hair at nipple length.
I would echo what others have posted in this thread.
Hello Doc: You have beautiful hair, and it frames a very handsome face. Once it is longer you won't see all the puffiness. good luck inyour hair growth.

Hey Doc,
I have similar hair to yours. Thick, curly, wavy and poofy. A lot of guys have hair like this but keep it short because it doesn't look good when it starts to get long, cause it poofs everywhere and looks very messy.
Let me tell you, if you're not adamant on growing out your hair YOU WILL cut it short again because it will not look good at the beginning stages.
For hair like ours it will take a while to start looking good, at least 1 year + (I'm at 1 year 2 months). After that, it will look freaking great. Hair like ours takes at least 1 year+ length to look good, and for the poofiness to go away. My hair now is starting to weigh itself down.
So if you're willing to suffer 1 year of having somewhat unmanageable hair to end up with some beautiful locks, let it grow brother
I have exactly the same hair, and a nose even bigger. I'm still 15, however, I was thinking of trimming it, but the replies motivated me to wait, afterall, my hair currently is just 4 months long.
