Hello,
I've been reading the posts here for some time and you all have inspired me to grow my hair.
currently it's in what you probably consider the awkward stage, however I have a job interview coming up in a week and it has been suggested to me to do something about my hair and one is to cut it short(which I don't want to do) or tame it. the problem seems to be with the cowlicks and frizz.
if it were up to me I would not worry about it, but I need some suggestions to make it more "presentable".
any product recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
thanks and keep it long!
cheers ;-)
Hi Gibson SG,
I would just like to repeat what has been said before on this board about jobs and hair growth. I would go to the interview with your hair at the length it is and made "presentable". Of course, "presentable" is subjective. If you get the job then you can think about cutting your hair. But, I would not cut until I knew I had the job. Of course, I would look until I could find a suitable employer who didn't give two cents about my hair.
I think your problem with cowlicks and frizziness will not be such a problem with more length. My hair has been slowly getting long enough to where the problems I was having are reducing. You could use gel or some type of product to tame the frizziness and keep it looking neater. I myself use just plain old hair tonic because I don't like the gel being stiff. Once my hair lays down better I will most likely stop using products in my hair. I wish you much success in your endeavors and hope you don't cut your hair:).

I forgot to mention that I love your handle. I think Tony Iommi plays a Gibson SG. Also, I wish I was looking for a job. Right now I am on dialysis waiting for a kidney transplant.
Take care, Ted
Ted,
I don't like using gel or hair wax for the same reason.
what type of hair tonic are you using?
I use The Dollar General brand which is very similar to Vitalis. If you don't use too much, it doesn't really look like you have product in your hair. If your hair gets out of place you just wet a comb and just comb it neat again. I much prefer it instead of gel. As I said, once my hair gets long enough I will stop using it. It has alcohol in it so not good for hair really. Especially long hair. Hope this helps. Oh, and I use this because Vitalis is like $6.00 a bottle. The stuff I am using is $1.00 a bottle. Just look around for products with ingredient lists similar to Vitalis.

Welcome to the MLHH and please forgive me just this once for spouting off a bit on what is considerd "presentable" and just who is calling the shots as to what "Presentable" is exactly suppose to mean.
I wish that once and for all the word "presentable" could be defined that would take in all and every situation. What is considered "presentable" by one person may be unacceptable to another. Let me first use the artists' depictions that we see of Christ as an example. Most all so-called "Christians" would say PRESENTABLE and proclaim their devout love for him. But, put that same depiction suddenly in living form on the street in some city of today looking for a job with a bunch of narrow minded people and see just how far he might get in finding a job. How about Santa Clause? (Long hair, beard and fat.) PRESENTABLE! "J.S Bach" Presentable! A famous Rock Start making millions with long hair. PRESENTABLE as long as he is in the band. (However, lots of money talks so in his case he may be allowed the honor of gaining employment as one whom flips Hamburgers at McDonalds.) Alot is most likely assigned to whatever the job is "established" in the minds of one or a very few for an "image" that they think is required for a lofty position such as stacking boxes. (Being a bit sarcastic here. I know.) And really, what is so great about so many of these that hire? And further, just how intelligent are these people anyway? Who has died to make them king? Ever look at some of these guys hair, or lack of and how they dress? Or better yet, how downright sloppy they themselves are. Being the owners son can always work wonders in just about any situation of course. One thing however is not fair. Women can have their hair any length for just about any job and that's ok. But for men this is not the case. Downright discrimination, and to think, it is actually allowed and the men just take this sitting down.
Guess it all boils down to and until the masses (if ever) grow up that "presentable" will be a thing resting in the mind of the individual who does the hiring or in some policy of whatever the business is that they deem "Appropriate."
Best of luck to you and again welcome. :-)
Justin~
ps: I know, I know, I know. I know and I know. What I have spoken of above is all a bit of an "on the surface" general summary. Naturally there are exceptions by the many tons everywhere that exist.
Hi Justin,
Wow, now this is an excellent post! Very well said! Thanks for posting this!
Take care, Ted
Justin,
I agree with you completely 100%!
she did suggest that i could avoid getting a severe haircut if I could somehow make it more presentable to the employers. she is not the problem and actually likes long hair on Men.
the problem is those in Human Resource management positions and other corporate management jobs.
they are the problem and if it was not for them a guy with waist length hair could walk in and get an interview, but you and I both know that utopia has yet to come about in our lifetime.
anyway, since posting last night I talked with some other people and one suggested trying to make it sleek by using a flat iron and some products. if it was long enough to pull it back into a ponytail it would be less of an issue.
anyway, I appreciate your feedback, but right now it's an employer job market and until it becomes an employee job market again many of us will have to make some compromises here and thee and I would do anything to keep from going short at this point.
again, thanks
For me, I'd brush/comb my hair (I prefer a fine tooth comb, but a brush also works), rinse it with hot water (cold water works better actually), let it dry, and then brush it again. No products necessary (at least for straight hair).
Your body has given you the best possible hair product: scalp oil. Too much obviously doesn't look good, but having some (a day's worth or two) should be enough to weigh your hair down enough.
Welcome to the MLHH...you will find lots of friendly folks here offering advise and encouragement.

Hi Gibson SG and welcome:) Hmmm, you sound like a guitar!LOL.
As for your hair I would try and not let it be an issue during any job search because it shouldn't be.Just go in with confidence with your hair tamed as best as possible.Anyway enjoy the group here and let us know how the job search goes.Cheers

If you want long hair, you cannot cut it for a job.
