hello!
I have been growing my hair for some 3-4 years now and am thinking about dreadlocks. I have been researching them but they don't exactly fit my hair texture. My hair is normal volume and straight. The women at the salon told me it would take several days to complete my dreads and about a year to mature, I might go through with it but I am wondering is there any other hairstyles that would work well with my hair?
Hi Ranko,
Looking at your pic and type of hair you maintain I would skip the idea of dreads.I do like the look of dreadlocks but think they work best with only certain types of hair.If your hair is very fine, which mine is like,I don't feel they would come out well and I wouldn't want to find that out the hard way.Obviously its your decision so good luck with it.Cheers

If you do dreads consider that will greatly reduce the apparent length, too. I like your current look--it looks very nice. Just my opinion...
i saw leave it alone, you have a great length which would look even better longer, why change it?

Greetings, Ranko.
Your hair looks great just as is. Dreads are a long time commitment. Once done, as I understand it, there is no going back. (I think the only way is to cut them off and start over.)
A hair style you might try is a braid or segmented tail. You could also wear it up in a bun.

Hi Ranko,
If I had your hair I would not even consider doing dreadlocks. Your hair is so nice the way it is I wouldn't want to do anything but grow it longer. That being said, you probably would look great with dreadlocks. I say do what you want to do though. Did I say I love your hair?
Take care, Ted
Well to tell you the truth I'm not a fan of dreadlocks, your hair is great looking as it is, I like long loose hair, just my two cents worth.

Hi Ranko,
Welcome to the hyperboard, and I would like to add that you have an excellent head of straight hair. My advice to you would be that dreadlocks may not be the best idea, especially if your hair is fine, since they can cause damage, and they are also very difficult to remove. I tend to agree with Scott's advice that either a braid or a segmented ponytail would work best.
Whatever you choose, good luck, and all the best in your future hair growing journey.
Keep it growing,
David
A resounding NO to dreadlocks...and the reasons have been stated by others. I had a friend that tried it some years ago and then tried to have the process "undone"...ended up having to get a brushcut...he was very unhappy with the whole experience.
You have great hair! I would not get dread locks! They will ruin you hair. They will split and dry your hair and removing them usually involves cutting them out. I also would not get any kind of small tight braids. Corn rolls etc.

I will not join the others in offering an absolute no to the idea of dreadlocks, but instead offer another option. There is a halfway point. You can actually create temporary or "fake" dreadlocks. They don't look exactly like full dreads, but they give you the feel and experience so you can make a more informed decision about going for the full effect. Instead of back-combing the hair, a very damaging process, you simply twist handfuls of it like strands of rope, spray it generously with hairspray, and dry it with some kind of iron or hair dryer. You can also use a gel for a sturdier structure. I did this last Halloween and with a little makeup, I looked like Rob Zombie for a day. It was a lot of fun, but let me know that dreads are not for me. The dreads can be washed and combed out when you are through with them, so you avoid any major damage before making the change permanent. I don't know how well they would hold up overnight because I washed mine out that night, but there are a lot of youtube videos about it.
