Hey folks.
I have grown my hair for 4 years now and its long, I keep it in a japanese bun on the top of my head. Not let it down yet, as I am still waiting for it to grow to the desired effect. Problem is, I was growing it until the sides catch up with the back and top length and it looks like they just dont want to, is that possible?!
I have always had my sides cut really close, so the past few years has been a real test of strength as my sides when they grow are wispy and don't lie straight like the rest of my hair and my style right now drives me nuts. In the past I would trim them short and have done with it but then the inevitable happens and I end up in this situation again!
I do want to grow it all long but the sides are at best only 3 or 4 inches long and need to be continually tamed with hairspray and even then it doesnt work 100%.
I guess its just my hair, its much more wirey around my sides.
So what are the suggestions folks?
Is my side hair ever going to grow to reach my ponytail, but only at a much slower rate than the rest?
Or will it stop, has it stopped and am i wasting my time trying ?
How can I get rid of my side hairs wispy nature ? Or should I have a haircut/undercut which works well and which I maintain ?
Any suggestions from those with similar hair welcome!
Thanks
JAY
Undercuts are not good news.
However patience will be rewarded in that they will go into a tail. However until the rest of your hair gets to terminal length they will never catch up as both continue to grow.
Let it grow until you have a decent tail and then think about whether to shorten the top very slightly.
Hi Jay,
The only thing I can say to this is as long as you do any cutting/ trims your hair will not grow. You could just keep trimming the back only and try to get the hair to grow all one length. I would only do this if I was really concerned about how it looks. Of course, me being a cheapskate I would prefer to just let all of the hair grow together. Then, when you get to a length you like you can decide what you want to do. I think you'll find that if you just leave the hair alone, things work out just fine. You just have to have that magic thing called...patience. Your patience will be rewarded. Believe me, I want to go to the salon all the time to get my hair "evened up" etc. You are not alone. I hope this helps you even a little bit. I look forward to your mid-back length one of these days:)

I wanted to add that if you ever need inspiration to not cut just check out all of the wonderful hair photos in the user's directory. That's a big part of what keeps me going. I hope you don't cut any of your hair, though.

Well I'm probably the only one here who has an undercut and I
know that undercuts are definitely frowned on here. But for
reasons somewhat similar to yours I went to an undercut and
since then I've enjoyed my long hair a whole lot more. But that
is just me and it may not work for others. Also I don't have an
extreme undercut, it goes a little above my ears on the sides
and it dips down in the back so its not level all around like
most undercuts. I am not advocating undercuts only just giving
my situation as I don't wish to invite the wrath of everyone
here down on me.
I agree with "MG". I too wore an undercut for years and LOVED it. I had the same problem: the sides would NEVER grow longer than a few inches. Not only did I like the feel of the undercut, I have always loved the looks of an undercut as well. Just my opinion tho. I too know how frowned upon the undercut is on this board so I never say too much about it.
Thanks Element!!!! It is nice to know that I have a kindred
spirit here and am no longer a minority of one. Those of us
with undercuts are a very small minority within the small
minority of guys with long hair.
My hair is exactly the same. I've been growing my hair for nearly eight years now and it's down to about mid-thigh, but the edges just don't grow longer than a few inches - not even long enough to tie back. I gave them about four years in the hope that they might grow long enough, but they never did. The hair around my forehead never grows beyond chin length either.
It's perfectly natural for the hair around your face and ears not to grow as long as the rest of your hair, so it's nothing to worry about. If you wear your hair loose, it doesn't matter as it blends in with the rest of your mane. However, if, like me, you tie it back most of the time, it can look untidy which is why I trim my "fluffy bits".
Now, every month or so, I get my other half to clipper my sideburns and the half-inch fringe around my ears that doesn't grow long. It looks neat when tied back and doesn't show when it's loose.
Hi MG,
At the risk of being mistaken, I am going to say that I don't think undercuts are frowned upon here. But, I think most people who come to this board are growing their hair the same way(all one length). I myself am going to grow my hair to around mid-back and then have bangs cut only in the front. Something like this:
P.S. I hardly believe any wrath would be incurred from this community.

Bruce Dickinson hair with bangs
Am I correct that that the typical "undercut" is long on the top,
short on the side and back?
And am I also correct that the majority of guys on this
board prefer to grow all of their hair one long length?
He said he has been growing his hair for 4 years. So you may be incorrect in this instance. I think his hair is cut close around his ears and such only. I am sure you are correct on the second point. There are probably as many ways to wear long hair as there are people with long hair.
Yes you are correct that its long on top and short on the sides and back. The main difference I think is how high some go with
the short hair. In my case I keep the short hair portion fairly
low so the long hair portion is greater.
Yes, but have you been growing your hair for around 4 years like the OP? Is your hair significantly longer where it isn't undercut? The OP said he has been growing his hair for 4 years. This would put his hair below shoulder length. Am I correct in thinking an undercut is where the person just shortens or shaves their hair around the ears and under the long hair to eliminate the wispy hairs? Maybe I just don't really know what an undercut is. I would welcome any enlightenment.
Ted
Ted,
To be totally correct what I have is called a tied back undercut.
The part above the ears and in the back is cut short, like 1/8",
and the rest is combed back into a ponytail. To answer your
question I have been growing mine for 20 years or more. Ever
since I was old enough to know that all I wanted was long hair!
Unfortunately my hair is curly wavy frizzy type and my terminal
lenght is around nipple lenght. So yeah I am definitely
envious of some of the hair here on the MLHH. But the lower
areas of my hair like above ears etc. never got more than 3 or
4 inches and always stuck out and really bugged me. So a few
years ago I did the undercut and since then I have really loved
my hair and the look.
I can also leave my hair loose and part it in the middle and
comb it down and the undercut is not really noticeable.
Does this help any? I did a lot of babling but don't know if
I clarified anything for you.
Hi MG,
Yes, I now understand what the undercut is. It is exactly what I thought it was. I appreciate the message and am glad you are enjoying your hair better with it. Like I said I am going to have bangs only in the front when my hair finally gets some decent length to it. My hair my way-period. Your hair your way-period. Take care and keep it growin' an flowin'!
Ted
For many men, the hear growing around the temples back to just around the ear doesn't grow as fast or as long as the hair on the rest of the head. That's just the way it is for some of us.
How you manage that is up to you.
Hello,
A fer yars ago I got me mullet and I regretted it and I still do. Now my front hairs are catching up. As for me I would nor do the undercut but it is up to you what you want to do with your hair.
Good luck and blessings
