So here's the thing. My hair, like the Pinto, tends to explode at the slightest provocation. Oh sure, after a shower it behaves itself, but before long it starts to creep over the horizon of my scalp. By the next day I end up looking like Kramer.
As my journey progresses, I have a sneaking suspicion that I'll end up looking like this:
Now, I'm not saying that's a bad look. That guy pulls it off spectacularly well. It's just not what I'm going for. And until my hair grows heavy enough to hold itself down, I fear that's what I'm in for.
So my question is this: How can I train my hair so that it stays down? Please keep in mind that I'm on a shoestring budget until I can get a steady job. Right now my haircare is based on a few giant boxes of hotel sized shampoo and conditioner that my cousin procured for me. I asked no questions.
Any homebrew remedies you may have would be appreciated, the cheaper, the better.
Hi Septet,
From looking at your photos it looks like you do have some curl in your hair at short length. But it's hard to tell what your hair will look like when it gets longer. That's the fun about growing your hair out.
I have waves in my hair that sometimes bother me. So, while it is wet I just keep combing it and this helps take out some of the waviness. When my hair gains more length and weight I probably won't do this. I suspect you might be able to do the same thing with your hair. Another thing that might help is if you can stretch your washes and limit the use of shampoo.
I think your hair is going to look great when it gets longer. I also think you would be pleasantly surprised with it at longer length. I am sure there will be more info posted here for you. Just stick with us here at MLHH and you will be fine. Take care and please don't cut.

I can see what you're saying but when it's longer and heavier any aggravation will be offset by the pure awesomeness that your thick and wavy hair will provide.
My hair is nowhere near as thick or full of body as yours but gel was my friend until it was long enough to tie it back. I used to slather it on in the morning and brush it straight back. It does produce kind of a hair helmet look but I think it would at least help control your hair some. You might have to use some of the stronger hold varieties.
Oiling one's hair also will reduce its amount of body. Coconut oil is great for that and is fabulous for your hair too.
Put a tiny drop of coconut oil or a larger amount of cream or gel in when damp and smooth down. It will dry less afro-like. Also you could put in a very loose pony until half/ almost dry.
