Hello, all
I am currently staying in a hotel in a town called Waxahachie Texas
while taking a drive around I have yet to see any guys with anything much longer than a short barber shop style.
Wear are all the long haired Men in this state?
I have drove around the DFW area and have yet to run into one. is this not a long hair friendly state?
If there a significant concentration of guys with long hair in the lone star state what area of the state would that be in?
I'd be hard pressed to find people in Waxahachie, let alone people with long hair. My and my other half drove through there last year on the way to Scarborough Renaissance Faire and it was completely void of life! Barely anyone round, most shops were shut down and boarded up. My fiancee had very fond memories of Waxahachie so it was very sad to see it looking like a ghost town. I hope things are slightly better there now!
On a plus, we went to a horror convention in Dallas last year and there were tons of long hairs about :-)
Simon,
I haven't seen any in Arlington or Fort Worth either and I was informed by a local resident in Fort Worth that the majority of long haired men were probably in the Austin area.
Hey Steve, I live in Arlington, TX :)
There's a large Christmas Eve party I go to in Dallas every year that attracts many long haired guys.

What type of work do you currently do?
Hi Steve,
I do software development and IT type work.

Surprised you're not in Austin where most of the IT in this state is.
I mostly "telecommute" from home. I'm not really tied to a location.
Most IT and other high-tech in DFW is in North Dallas, Plano and Allen.
Austin is growing like crazy. Congestion is a problem in many areas. It's the only place I know of where you be in a traffic jam at 2am.
The nightlife on 6th Ave is great!

There are long hairs scattered about the state of Texas - Austin probably has the highest concentration.
And do you reside in Austin and would you recommend it over some other areas in the state?
As is common in many more-conservative/less-diverse areas where conformity is often socially enforced, longhairs and especially longhaired men are more or less rare. You will find them in longhair friendly cultural groups, more developed urban areas, near universities, and where ever groups that tolerate long hair congregate.
Austin, being the most liberal area in the state would be an obvious choice, wherever the concentration of rural conservative white people is lowest, where techies, artists and fannish types congregate, in some Latino populations, etc.
Good luck!
It may be easier to just drive west into New Mexico...
How is the job market there in Austin?
I don't have a college degree, but have considered going back to school, but would rather get situated first.
I will do just about any job including mopping floors just to get settled in the area. I am not that particular right now and would prefer to live in a more tolerant community than an uptight one and yes, since out and about in some areas I've received a few "looks" which I could conclude might be "you need a haircut" type look IYKWIM.
I even had it suggested to me by some woman at an agency in the area that I should "do something about my hair".
I am very tolerant to other lifestyles: gay, goth, punk, metal, hippie, whatever so I would have no problem with those folks, but it does appear that most folks in this particular region seem to blend in more and I prefer diversity and open-mindedness to intolerant conservative-minded folks.
any suggestions or info would be greatly appreciated.
I am not going to cut my hair just to "fit in" for some regular job.
No knowledge of the job market out there, heck, I barely know that things are getting better in SF!
I grew up in central North Carolina...and while I didn't know many things as a teenager, I did know ONE thing for sure...that I was getting the hell out of there, for someplace where noone gave a damn that I was different!
Are you referring to the job market in the Bay area or something else?
what was it like growing up in North Carolina?
Job market...I've been in the same job for going on 16 years, so I'm a bit disconnected from the job market.
Sucked. Kids shouldn't have to grow up in a place where dogs are set on them, where neighbor kids fire guns in their direction to scare them, are shunned for being different, expect to hear racial taunts frequently, etc.
At least my family traveled in the summers so I knew there were other places, places where the locals aren't still mad they lost the Civil War, where hatred of the Other isn't a defining mark of the culture and prevailing religion.
Yeah, after 30 years it is still raw, and I am still glad that I am 3000 miles away.
SteveK,
If you're seriously looking around, try looking at Lincoln, Nebraska. Somewhat conservative state - somewhat liberal state capital. Tied second lowest unemployment rate of any metro area in the U.S. (3.0%). They'll hire anyone... including a long haired "hippy" like myself :p ~
Best of luck ^_^ !!!
Sincerely,
Eric
What kind of work do you do?
Social Worker for a private company. Dress code is what you think is "professional" (I don't really like that word) - and that even stretches to nice T-Shirts. Before that I worked for the public schools and in a public school... each school is a little different but they never had a problem with my hair (even though I was going through the awkward stage at the time >< ). The Superintendent saw me one day and I think it knocked him a little off balance but I never heard anything about it ~o~ . Casual Fridays were always the best :D !
Anyways, I'll write a little more about Lincoln soon... please give me a little time ^_~ . Thanks for your interest ^^ !
Sincerely,
Eric
Just a disclaimer... the reason I don't like that one word in my previous post is because of the Bohemian/hippy side of my showin' a little bit... peace on earth, dude!
Disclaimer end.
Waxahachie, Texas is the home of Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU), a conservative Pentecostal denomination's university. There may be a dress code at the school, so perhaps you saw some of the students in town.
Having read most responses, I'd have to agree and cast my vote for Austin. However, you never know where you'll run into a free spirit. My hair is down to my knees and I live in Garland, it's not often maybe because I'm a home body, but I do notice other guys with long hair. My job allows it, as a matter of equality.
Yes, Waxahachie is a pretty conservative small town, so you'd probably be hard pressed to see many guys with long hair there. I'm sure they're around, though. The DFW area may not have as high a percentage of such guys as some regions of the country, but we're certainly here. There's certainly enough to fill a rock concert with them now and then.
Off the top of my head, I'm thinking you'd see the highest concentrations of longer haired guys in, say, areas like the Deep Ellum and Lower Greenville Avenue areas of Dallas or Denton. There certainly are lots of long haired country boys around, too. I live in the suburban Mid-Cities area, though, where other long haired guys are scarcer, but certainly represented.
I live in southern California, and I rarely see anyone with (real) long hair.
well, around here the majority have short crops or buzzed/shaved styles.
not too many dudes with shoulder length or longer.
as a matter of fact not many have hair long enough to cover the ears. I've seen a few of those, but they aren't in the majority.
