It's been a long time since I've taken some pure hair photos and the mood struck me today. I find that for months I don't think much about my hair but then I do turn my attention back to it. It's fun to try to think of new things to do with it.
One style I've been trying is to braid my hair higher up on my head. This gets it away from the neck and should be especially nice in the summer. It also provides a slightly different look to my daily braid. This is day 2 hair so it's a little greasy:
I've also been experimenting with Ojon oil. I really like it. I don't use it as often as coconut oil but it smells great and I like how it reacts to my hair.
These photos were taken after shampooing and then using NO conditioner but only Ojon oil applied to my damp hair. The one on the left is completely untouched hair. The one on the right is after I brushed it out:

Lastly, I took my very first hair photos of my son yesterday. His blond curls were especially prominent and I wanted to document them. It's funny that he was born with a full head of dark hair that all fell out and now it's been replaced with blond. I doubt the blond will stay permanently. I was very blond until I was about 10 but my wife always had brown hair. I wonder if he will have the interest in long hair that I do. He'll have the privilege of deciding for himself exactly how he'd like to wear his hair:
Impressive braidwork! I look forward to being able to pull that off.
That oil certainly does make your hair look shiny. I'll have to look into it.
That's a real cute looking kid you've got there. It's good that he's part of such a great family.
Thanks! I wear my hair braided everyday. I found that it cuts down on damage and feels more comfortable than a ponytail. It takes a while to learn but soon becomes automatic.
Hey Jason,
First of all your pics are great and thanks for posting some new ones for the members to see:)That braid is quite impressive and I would agree it's likely going to be very comfortable to wear during a hot/humid summer.I've been enjoying wearing the lazy bun with my hair sticks as it has become my preferred method to manage my hair when not loose. Now I only use the baseball cap method only at work because that still offers the best protection for my hair.Sometimes if I don't lock the hair sticks in properly they fall out at inappropriate times.lol.As for your son it will be interesting what he chooses to do with his hair.A lot will depend on peer pressure as he grows up and how he deals with that.As well all know other peoples kids can be down right rotten!Well time will tell and with your hair as an example he may just go that route;)Cheers my friend.

Hi Mark,
I'm envious of your ability to make a bun. For some reason I just can't seem to master the technique. I know they're great for hot days and also cutting down on damage.
Boys who want to be longhaired definitely face challenges. All we can do is support them if they choose to go that route. There's no doubt that a certain amount of grief will come to them at school. It will be up to my son as he decides how important his hair is to him.
Thanks for your comment,
Jason

Your hair is looking good, Jason. I like the way it looks loose.
Only time will tell whether your son will desire to have long hair.
Scott
Thanks Scott. It will be interesting to see what kind of hair he ends up with and what he decides to do with it.
Hi Jason,
Thanks for the wonderful update! First, your son is the cutest little boy ever! His hair is really nice. Your hair is looking great also. I really like the braids with the color. Do you normally use conditioner or just oil? Do you only apply the oil to the ends of your hair?
Please keep posting such nice photos for us to see. As Septet said in hs post, your wife is very beautiful! Which just might explain how cute your wonderful son is! Take care my friend!
Ted
Hi Ted,
Thanks for all the kind words. Normally I do use conditioner but I've begun to experiment with using this oil in its place rather than just in addition to it. I apply it all through my hair.
Jason
Awesome pictures, Jason! I must tell you that your long hair journey is the very best one in terms of dedication to constant documentation on the net, and I probably used a whole hour yesterday reading each and every entry in it :) thank you for all the hard work put into it! :)
Your kiddo is a real charmer, and your hair looks awesome in that higher type braid! Did it take you long getting the hang of braiding yourself in the beginning?
Haha, thanks, Raul. Perhaps because I was denied long hair for so long, I took great interest in documenting the journey once I was finally on it. Thanks for making it through the whole blog!
Braiding does take some time to learn but I just kept practicing. Once you get the finger positioning, it's really just a series of repeating it and your fingers start to remember what to do.
Jason
Hi Jason,
It is always good to get an update from you, and these are an excellent set of photos. I know that I am overdue for an update myself, but my hair has not really changed in the past year or so.
Your son is blessed with great natural curls. It will be interesting to see if he decides to embark on his own journey to long hair in the future!
Take care,
David
Hi David,
Thanks for your comments. I've been thinking we'd love an update from you. It's been a while indeed!
There are so many aspects of parenting that are, of course, more important than caring for a child's hair but nevertheless, it will be interesting to see what route my son goes with it.
Regards,
Jason
That's a good look. congratulations.
Good to read that you son will have a free hand in choosing his hair style, exactly what I would expect from you but he will need support at various times if he chooses the long hair route.
Duncan
Thanks Duncan. I hope to nurture his freedom to express his individuality and to impress upon him its importance.
Great family hair update, Jason!
Your hair is looking great in both the braided and loose styles. It will be fun to watch your son's hair evolve. It took me about a year after birth for my hair to start growing.
- Oren
Thanks Oren!
Jason,
It is good to hear from you! Nice pictures and your hair is looking great. I am glad you and your family are doing well. I am going to post an update pic this week. I last had my hair trimmed on 11/1/2012. I have obtained some new growth.
Darrin
Thanks, Darrin. I look forward to your update!
Hi Jason,
Man, you have great hair color - especially in the braided photos! I know how to braid but I'm struggling to do it on myself :/ ... maybe I need to take some lessons ^_~ ~
Great photo of your son, too :D . Where'd he get all of that curly hair from :o ???
Sincerely,
Eric
Thanks Eric! My hair has more of a reddish tone for some reason in certain outside lighting.
My wife's parents had pretty straight hair as does she but my mother had curly hair so perhaps he got some of those genes.
Keep trying at the braiding. It's a great way to wear your hair IMO.
