Check this crap out:
I'm so glad my employer (a big city transit agency) doesn't give a damn (officially or otherwise) that my hair is long...the only concern is that it be contained when I am in hazardous locations...but that applies to all employees.
Much more important: do you show up to work? can you do your job safely and efficiently? Then there is a whole bunch of stuff related to the job...and then way way down there are things like hairstyle and appearance and the like...just before you get to things that you make sure you DON'T make work decisions about...like religion and race and skin color!
Somehow I'm not surprised that this is from the benighted
South...which I include Texas in. Bah!
I find these policies that force men to cut their hair short, and allow women to keep it long backwards.
In Montreal, bus and metro drivers can have long hair. I have seen guys with beards and long hair drive subway trains, and in the change booths, one guy with very long hair.
This is what I find a good image of diversity. Uniformity is boring, inhuman and is often a facade for a bad product.
Have a good day,
Georges in Montreal.
How exactly is the length of your hair related to your driving ability? I haven't done any math on the subject, but I can say with absolute certainty that the majority of males who cause car accidents have short hair. Not that it means anything, of course. You could just as easily connect it to having two eyes.
Oh, and the comments are full of all the tolerance and acceptance that I have come to expect from people on this issue.
Technically can't he sue them because of religious beliefs for race or something like that?
Probably he can. Most likely he has a good case, but they haven't fired him yet. They will probably go through multiple warnings to try to build up their side of the case.
I appreciate everyone's take on this guy's predicament. The intolerance of our society will never cease to amaze me. May this guy have Godspeed against these intolerant powers that be.

As it's popped back up, I will add that being Native American is a pretty solid legal reason for having long hair in the US. If it goes to court the guy will win. It's a shame that this legal cause isn't open to everyone else!
