My boyfriend has long hair. He is really worried because he is losing his hair at 37. He wants to try to help this but he doesn't want to have to go as far as to try Rogaine. Is there any way we can fix this? He's talking about going as far as to wear a wig if he goes bald. I really want to help him.
Hi Jessica,
Tell him that if he wants to keep his real hair, that he'll either have to use Rogaine or even better yet Procepia (a.k.a Proscar, which is kind'a expensive depending - it comes in a 1mg brand name tablet or a 5mg generic and insurance doesn't cover it) before he looses it all. If I had to choose, which I did, it's use it instead of loose it. Once his hair follicles have died off, it's all game over :/ .
After I started taking Procepia, I was most relieved than anything ~o~ . Nothing will guarantee it his hair will stay there in the long run (my hair started to grow back even), but it's better than looking like your granddad ^_~ .....
Hope this helps and I wish both of you the best of luck ^_^ !!!
Sincerely,
Eric
I agree with yoshiki--I started Propecia probably a decade or more ago (I forget), and I think I have not suffered much loss since. Indeed, there is no change in the front hairline, the area where Propecia works, as I understand it. I tried to add Rogaine to my regimen since (I think) it addresses loss at the crown, but found after a few weeks I developed really bad itching and stopped using it.
I also take a number of supplements, which are not proven necessarily useful, but in my case I think they actually cause my hair to grow faster. The main one everyone recommends is Biotin (I take 5000 mcg/day)but I also take zinc (with copper), L-Lysine, L-Cystine, L-Methionine, L-Arginine. These are cheap, although the Propecia is not. But, I don't buy a cup of Starbucks or eat lunch out every day!
Hi Jessica,
Although I know nothing whatsoever about products like Propecia and Rogsaine, some general knowledge about MPB, as well as how to emotionally survive a modest degree of hairloss as men age, I always find helpful and reassuring.
Here's a few things I've learned about the topic over the years:
1) once a man reaches the age of 30, whatever degree of hairloss he's experienced so far by that age, it's unlikely he'll have much further significant balding pattern other than gradual increase in hair-thinning due to age -- in other words, your boyfriend being age 37, if he can learn to live with a minimal amount of hairloss (as he currently sees in the mirror), then my advise would be just to relax and not worry about it.
2) growing older is a part of life -- and with the aging process, even the luckiest of genetically-gifted people often experience some small amount of at least hair-thinning as they grow older... and the alternative to growing older is definitely not worth considering (LOL)!
3) if you are worried that your boyfriend's MPB might be some other variety of Alopecia, rather than just ordinary Male Pattern Baldness, going to see a doctor will give you better advise than here...
My age at present is 59, due to turn the big 6-zero this summer. Over the years I've experienced a moderate amount of receding hairline at the temples in front; but otherwise have a very full head of hair. I used to worry about this issue when I was in my late 20s and all throughout my 30s and even a bit into my 40s, because I miss my much handsomer lower hairline of my youth!! But as I've gradually gotten older, I've learned to just be grateful for whatever I still have attached to my head thanks to Mother Nature -- and have grown my hair out long anyway, in spite of whatever the "Fashion Police" would advise otherwise!
I hope my comments have been helpful!

I have been using proscar tablets perscribed my a hair restoration surgeon. I cut these up four ways, ingesting each quarter piece each day. Its about $120.00 for a year supply.
This has stopped, even reversed the destruction of my scalp hair follicles. Its the only way to keep our hair, in addition to the hair transplant.
