This is my hair at 60 months old. It is still growing but in the last year the ends have thinned out. Not the most flattering hair photo as it was a hot day and my hair doesn't like humidity and puffed up somewhat. My hair is now around 75 cm long.
Duncan
This was taken 12 months earlier. I think my hair is reaching terminal length soon but still hold out some hope that it may continue to get some more length. Time will tell I guess. I now have 40 months of natural hair and 20 months of straightened ends adding up to a total of 60 months. However my hair is still in layers never being cut except for some slight trims and cutting off of split ends. Do you think i still have a chance to thicken up the ends? What do guys reckon?
Duncan
Dude I also have layers since I grew my hair from a buzz cut. I'd probably wait until I reach waist length to decide if I want a blunt cut. But I tell myself maybe I don't need to worry cause my hair can get poofy and frizzy that it just blends in well naturally. Weird thing is I don't get split ends cause when that happens one of the split parts just breaks away. Looking at your newer pics I think you've made lots of improvement, so whatever it is you are doing now keep it up. I would try to add variety in your day to day styling, like rotating braiding hair, bunning hair, changing the position of where you tie your hair, and also adding in half-ups. Main point is just to mix it all up so that you avoid tension in one area of pulling the hair.
peace out,
rowie
Hi Rowie,
Yes I hear you about the layers. For guys of our thick hair type I personally think it is better to get longer length first before trimming because weight is important to keep our hair looking neat and less frizzy. (in theory if not practice!)Mine is still in layers so I cannot rule out that I am reaching terminal just yet. My hair is solid thickness except in the last 8 inches or so and I am noticing the longer my hair grows the longer the thicker layer is, My own length is now solid at mid back and slowly thickening up the longer it gets. The last 8 inches is of the straightened hair texture which in time will disappear leaving only curly wavy hair type. I urge anyone to keep their natural texture as it looks and feels better and lasts longer.
I have always had hassles with fairy knots and split ends and routinely do the search and destroy missions. Most of my tangles arise from split ends. I have had to trim off sections of hair in the back that got heavily damaged on the ends.
My curly hair does not do well in braiding so wearing a segmented pony tail or loose pony tail works better for me. It is difficult to separate the hermit corkscrew curls from one another as that is what you have to do in braiding and I don't want further damage.
Also I recommend to use only organic sulphate/silicone free shampoos and conditioners for curly or wavy hair often our hair type dries out very quickly and some shampoos contain harsh alcohol based additives which would dehydrate the hair quicker.
Cheers,
Duncan
I so agree with you about the sulphates, but I do use cones cause my hair is tough to comb out and I really need the slip so that I avoid less breakage, I get these dreadlock type knots around nape of the neck area, and I found cones to work better in controlling having these natural dreadlocks from forming in that area. But at least I clarify once a month and I make sure my ends are well protected and oiled.
thanks for your tips,
rowie
Wow that is a really cool segmented ponytail. Your thickness makes it look spectacular. You absolutely have a chance to thicken and even grow your lengths provided you take extremely well of your ends. I think for our hair texture the most important aspect for me is keeping the ends moisturized whenever it feels dry. I would use coconut oil and during the winter I alternate with olive oil. I noticed less breakage when I do this because I realized that my hairs are not straight enough to let my sebum travel down to my ends. I have to compensate by making sure that my ends are not dry.
Here is a moisture treatment I did called SMT or Snowymoon's Moisture Treatment (recipe and method can be found at LHC). This treatment really relaxed my hair (I guess my curls don't like clarifying shampoo and so it looks more relaxed). Well, to sum it up my ends feels so much better and it lasted me the whole week so far.
Now this is the pose you will do when you hit finger tips length. I guess it doesn't hurt to practice already. Now Imagine your hair at this length....
keep on growing it!
-rowie
Hi Rowie,
If I ever got my hair to grow to finger tip length I can imagine my new nickname would be "THE YETI" .
I would love to experience hair of that length.
Time will tell I guess.
Cheers,
Duncan
Duncan:
Lookin' good !! Quite a change without the "face-fur" Really makes you look younger.
......and yes, I noticed that you wore the same shirt as your avatar....cool
Thanks for Sharing

To the Venerable Chief White Tail,
Always great to hear from you and I got to agree that I look and feel younger without the grey muzzle!
I regularly like variety so enjoy both being clean shaven and the bearded look.
Cheers,
Duncan the Big Bear
Hair is looking real good, really cool to see your true color with the sun hitting it. Still not used to seeing you without a beard. You look younger and I couldn't recognize you at first, i'm like "who's this dude wearing Duncan's head." hehehe
you have a good one!
Hi again.
Glad to be clean shaven again. Probably grow it back in the winter again. Yes I got to agree that I do look somewhat different without the facial muzzle hair happening.
Duncan
Awesome hair - even with the humidity. I am totally jealous!
Personally, I think you look tons better without the beard too.
Damon

Hi Damon,
Thanks for the compliments regarding the hair :). I agree with you that the beard made me look older. I will probably grow it back again for winter time and stay clean shaven in summer.
I feel an affinity for Goth culture, and like the elegant Steam Punk, HP Lovecraft, Cemeteries, Haunted Houses, and some of the Music too.
I visited the 1757 built Admiral Lord Nelson flagship HMS Victory in the UK many years ago. It was an interesting if cramped experience. My father grew up in Plymouth, Devon before migrating to Australia in 1968.
Cheers,
Duncan
Hi Duncan,
Wow, I'd love to have the warm temps you are experiencing currently as we just got through a snowstorm here on the east coast of the US.lol.But more important is your fantastic hair!Looking great after 60 months in spite of some puffiness:)Hopefully your hair continues to grow if that's what you desire.Cheers my friend.
Mârk
Hi Mark,
Yes I heard about the 2 feet dumping of snow and just how fiercely cold things are at the moment in your neck of the woods. Over here we have been getting very hot weather indeed - think of temperatures around 100-120 Fahrenheit with some very humid days. In regards to my hair it is still growing, and i still want longer length so I ain't done yet. My hair is gradually thickening up in overall body whereas the ends now look very thin indeed. I have been tempted to cut the thin ends off, but like you cannot bear to lose lenght.
Keep warm my friend, I would love to be back in winter again. My inner Goth and hair loves the cold!
Cheers,
Duncan
Great look, Duncan. I love the thickness and texture.
Hi Rktect,
Thank you for the thumbs up! I must admit I am secretly jealous of how neat and tidy your own hair looks in comparision to mine! I saw your own progress and must say that your own mane is looking great and I think it definately suits you to a T.
I remember that you are into old cars. I once owned a series of three ZA Ford Fairlanes built in 1967 and run on a V8 289 Windsor Motor. Chrome galore and King of the Road made for an excellent touring car.
Old cars like Long hair are highly individual, and I just hate the new clone cars that are being made now.
Cheers,
Duncan
Very impressive! As you remarked previously, your hair resembles John Tardy's from the band Obituary with its incredible thickness.
It's hard to say if you're near terminal. Sometimes it's surprising how hair can continue to lengthen even if the ends start to thin. I guess you'll be faced with the same choice I have been of whether to go for more length and have it be thin at the ends or to get the ends trimmed for a fuller hemline.
That's quite a different look without your beard! I like to change my facial hair around quite a bit.
Hi Jason,
Yes my hair ends are definately thinning now, and I think my hair growth rate is slowing down too. However it is still growing longer and when wet reaches my tail bone. I am hoping to achieve a decent waist length in thickness. Like you, I enjoy periods of both being clean shaven and having a beard. I feel younger looking without a beard and also look less intimidating too. (I don't like to scare people but my beard made me look to some people a bit frightening) My long hair is more important to me then having a beard which was also a hassle to keep well groomed.
I have seen your myriad of photographs on your Facebook page and seen your small son enjoying some outdoors winter activity. Must say your son is truly blossoming and with yourself and your wife can see that he wants for nothing. I do hope you found a more child/parent friendly daycare centre for him :)
Cheers,
Duncan
Good Morning Duncan,
Yes! Wow! This is what I have been waiting for! Your hair looks fantabulous! I just love the color and thickness! Some people pay good money for volume like you have. I would say this is a very flattering pic of you! I am totally enjoying these pics and thank you so much for posting them! Here's to a great week for you my friend!
Ted
Hi Ted,
Glad to be of service in helping inspire you along on your hair journey:). In regards to your own head of hair I have noticed eerie similarities between yours and Joao David's at a similar length. Checkout his website gallery photographs and you can see what I mean. I think your own hair has great potential to blossom into an awesome mane like Joao's.
Yes, I hear you about the hair volume. My hair used to be even more thicker in volume in the past and I am very grateful at 42 to still enjoy it's thickness. It has taken me a long time to make peace with my hair and whereas volume is great it also shrinks length and takes ages to dry. Hair wash at 8.00am in the morning, and doesn't dry completely until 6.00pm in the evening or later!
My hair hates heat and humidity and I have to wear my hair up under a hat on hot days otherwise I'd perspire like hell around the face and neck.
Cheers,
Duncan
Can I say WOOOOOWOWOWOW! Your hair looks fantastic! It is extremely thick and i'm envious. I bet your hair is longer when stretched or when it's wet. Thanks for sharing this. You've got someone inspired. I hope you don't mind I save this pic to my iPad photo album. It'll serve as a reminder that I don't need to straighten my hair. Thanks for keeping it real. This really means a lot to me.
best,
rowie
P.S If I ever visit down under i'll have to look you up! :)
Lookin' good my friend. You should be proud! I will bet the length can go further, just my gut feeling. Good luck.
Steve
Hi Steve,
Thank you for the kind comments, and my hair is still growing longer so it will be interesting to see what the next 12 months brings :)
Best regards
Duncan
What an outstanding mane, Duncan! Absolutely amazing thickness! :)
Hi Raul,
Yeah it's very thick. What I like to call "having hairs in reserve"
Duncan
It looks great Duncan ! It's quite surprising to see you without beard ;)
Vivien.
Hi Vivien,
Thanks for the comments and I think I will enjoy looking younger again. (while it lasts!) LOL.
Enjoying life without a beard after an 18 month razor-free trial.
Beards can be a hassle to look after particulary curly ones and being more careful how you eat.
Cheers,
Duncan
Absolutely awesome, Duncan!
For most of us in the 60 month and beyond league, thinning at the ends is inevitable.
Humidity makes my hair puff up too. In fact human hair was(is) used in some mechanical humidity guages (hygrometers).
- Oren
Hi Oren,
I took the plunge yesterday and actually trimmed off around 4 inches off my very thin hair ends which stood out in sharp contrast to my thicker section.
I decided to do what Jason and Mark S. did and am happier because my ends now look more sharply defined and less prone to tangles.
Still gonna aim for a solid length to the belt. Be interesting to see what the next 12 months brings.
Thanks again for your imput into the humidity side of things. One thing about curly wavy hair is that can shrink, expand, and otherwise change in appearance depending on the weather.
Your beard is looking great and I think it is now so long that it detracts attention away from your hair somewhat. Super long beards are a lot rarer then guys with waist length hair I'm guessing!
Cheers,
Duncan
Sounds good, Duncan.
Yes, my beard is at 26 inches and thins out quite a bit at the ends like my hair does. I keep it in two braids most of the time.
Happy hair farming!
- Oren
Hi Duncan,
You are blessed with such incredibly thick hair, and cheers to you on achieving such an excellent length. I am sure that you will manage at least some additioanl length, and Jason has raised some excellent points. You can go for a longer length with thinner ends, or a slightly shorter length with a thicker hemline.
Keep up the good work!
David
Hi David,
Always good to hear from you my friend. I made the decision yesterday to trim 4 inches off my very thin hair ends to thicken my hair ends up and am very happy with the results.
For a long time I haven't been happy having super straight ends which stood out in contrast to the rest of my natural curly wavy hair.
I got so much tangles happening on the ends that it was a hassle combing through it each day.
Looking forward to the next 12-24 month period which I hope I can achieve my ultimate goal of tailbone length with thick ends.
Best regards,
Duncan

Your hair looks great. You may be approaching terminal length. The heat probably does affect that. (My hair sheds more with warm temps.) Great update.
Scott
Thanks Scott. I had a trim a few days ago and cut off 4-5 inches off the very thin ends and now my hair looks a bit nicer looking and more defined on the ends. I'm hoping in time to grow a solid thickness to the waist. I don't think I have the genetics to grow much beyond tailbone length.
Cheers,
Duncan
