Hey guys, I just found this site today, and been looking around a bit. I've been wanting to find some good tips for taking care of long hair, because I honestly have no idea what I'm doing.
My basic story is I always wanted to grow my hair out, even when I was a kid. I just always got the feeling that I would look better that way, and when I first started growing it out I finally started to feel like this was the real person I was. Kinda cool. Plus people said I looked much better that way. I've had a few people come up to me and say that they don't normally like long hair, but they thought it looked okay on me. So that's cool, since I worry about that sometimes.
Anyway. I have no idea what some of the practical stuff I should be doing is, and I have a hard time coming up with good ways to style it.
The pic I'm posting isn't a current one. It was me at about two years growth. Shortly after that, I decided to cut my hair short, to see if I was serious about having long hair or not. About two weeks after I cut it, I was really bummed. So, now I know!
I'm growing it out again, but it's at about half the length it is right here.
The biggest thing I don't like is that the front of my hair doesn't grow as fast, it seems, and isn't as long, so I can't really put it into a ponytail or anything, without the front flopping forward. I'm gonna keep growing it out though, this time I definitely wanna go for a ponytail.
I'm gonna lurk around a bit and just read up on some tips. I've already found some good stuff on here, so thanks guys!
Hi, and nice hat!
Have you tried parting it yet? Gel also works, as does a discreet headband.
Also, learn from me. If you have coarse, stick straight hair, DO NOT keep it tucked behind your ears. It'll form a really annoying curve.
I part it down the middle right now, as it just kinda "sits there". I've tried to the side, but I don't really like the way it looks that much. Right now it kinda just pats itself down by the weight, but it depends on how I wash it. Sometimes it'll get poofy and sometimes it'll be all compact. I dunno which causes what.
Also, my hair gets this weird, cool curl at the end by itself. I gotta upload a new pic to show. And as far as going around the ear, I actually kinda like it. :)
Also, how do you even know what kind of hair you have? People have said mine is thin, but that's about all I know.
Me in New York City 2012 August. The background is Columbia College (I'm really hoping that I would get in to that, or better as decisions come out next month.)
Oops! Picture here.
Wow Steve you have great looking hair, yeah you should keep your hair long. I do like the color and thickness. Take care.

You look really great with hair! You didn't have to cut to understand it :) Good luck to you on your way of growing it back again!
As for advices, hard to tell something. It's my first time with long hair, and I don't basically know much too.
Serge.
Heya Steve!
Good thing you´ve already had long hair and know what to expect. I am in the same boat as you, though at a much earlier stage of regrowing my hair, so it´s really all about enjoying the ride and having fun :)
Welcome!

Welcome to the board, Steve!
The reason it feels like the front is growing slower is because it takes longer to get from the front of your head to the back. The hair on the back of your head is already touching your neck, so it seems longer. Basically, it's all in your head. You've just got to wait it out. Most folks do this with the cunning use of hats.
You have to be strong if you want to walk this road. By now it's been thoroughly ingrained in most people that "long is wrong" for men. Even women are expected to go short once they have kids, or reach the age of 30, like it's some kind of rite of passage. Heck, my mom is more supportive of me being Pagan than she is of my long hair. Be strong brother, find your true self. Whomsoever it may be.
Never stop growing, friend. Mind, body, and soul.

Hi Steve,
Thanks for the update! Your hair will look great when it's long. In this picture your hair looks awesome. The TMNT hat is cool too:) Welcome to the MLHH and please keep it growing and flowing! I look forward to your future updates! Have a great week my friend!

Steve, you have beautiful hair so please remove the hat ;)
Guys,
Thanks for all the support and responses, wow! That was awesome. I feel like I'm not alone in this world, trying to pull this crazy thing off. :)
I'm uploading a pic I just took, so you can see where I'm at right now.
I like wearing hats for a couple of reasons. One of them is it pats my hair down, which I like how it looks that way. It seems that whenever I wash it, it gets a lot of body so it just looks like I have a fat head. It only does that some of the time, though, so I dunno what's making that happen.
The other reason is that my hair on the back naturally "flairs" a little bit to the side (you can see it on the sides of my neck here). It only does that at the end of the hair, and it's otherwise completely straight. With a hat on, it kind of makes that part stand out, so I think it looks cool, which is why I wear a hat a lot.
As you can see, it's pretty short right now. It's just getting to the point where I'm getting excited and I can see things coming along shortly. Waiting is the worst part!
Thanks guys for all your help. I'll post some more questions about hair care as I think about them. I'm just gonna read up on other posts for now and see what I can figure out.
