Hi all-
I've got a question - What does everyone use on their hair?
I have very fine "fly away" hair. In the winter, like now, it gets VERY dry andI have even more split ends. I don't do anything specific with it (actually I use cheap shampoo and conditioner). Once in a while I put some oil (My wife got it I don't know what it is called) in it but then it is oily until the next time I wash it.
I've read things like:
- Don't shampoo (I can't pull myself to do that - it looks even worse then!)
- Don't use conditioner - If I didn't I'd never be able to brush it!
- Cut the split ends - I've had my wife "trim" my hair once in a great while but it doesn't seem to help as many of the split ends are on top.
- Don't blow dry your hair - I do once every few weeks If I'm going out and want it to look very good.
I really don't mind it getting dry but I'm afraid it is damaging my hair - any thoughts?
Thanks - oh, here's a new pic from this morning :-)
Hi Shadowfax,
I just love your hair! It looks great in this photo. I can tellyou what I do, however my hair is very different from yours. I also use cheap shampoo and conditioner most of the time. I have started to use Pantene products because they seem to "agree" with my hair. When I wash my hair I always comb the conditioner through my hair. I lather gently with shampoo. I rinse both shampoo and conditioner out with warm water. Right before I get out I rinse my hair under very cold water and comb it through. This has made a world of differnce in the feel of my hair. I never use a blow dryer or brush on my hair. That is asking for trouble in my case. Hope this helps.

I keep hearing about guys doing this, but doesn't the cold water
also leave more shampoo residue?
I was under the impression that using cold water doesn't remove
the soap residue.
Hi LHIA,
I always rinse both shampoo and conditioner out with warm water. I only do the final rinse with cold water right before I get out of the shower.

I shampoo my hair about once a week, every time i shower I use
conditioner and comb it with a wide tooth comb after finger combing to carefully eliminate tangles.
I use conditioner every time I take a shower.
I don't trim the split ends, the last time I had anything trimmed was about 11 moths ago and that was only to
eliminate damaged ends. I never blow dry the hair, it air drys
very quickly.
I use WEN cleansing conditioner. It cleans without drying and functions as a conditioner too. I have used it for years. Also use OJON-Plus oil once a week before cleansing. No dry ends or split ends. Wouldn't do without them.
Hi Shadowfax,
Have to say your hair looks awesome so you must be doing something right:)My routine, at the moment, is very simple.Shampoo and condition my hair twice per week seems to work for me.Used to use coconut oil but found it was greasing my hair down too much so stopped applying it.Other than that it's just henna retreatments every six to eight weeks:)Cheers

First of all, your hair looks great. You might consider washing it with a diluted vinegar solution, followed by a generous conditioning treatment, rinsed with cool water. About once weekly, saturate it with olive oil, leave it in for several hours (overnight would be good), then shampoo and again condition it generously. If the air is dry in winter where you live, you might also consider running a humidifier/vaporizer.

Fantastic hair. Nice length and styling. I also have dry hair that readily tangles. So much that my wife's hairstylist in S.F. recommended applying regular conditioner in heavy gobs in the shower. Leave the gobs on for two hours out of the shower. Then get back in and rinse this off. Every morning. I apply a leave in conditioner to the crown and then lower back areas of the hair that readily tangles.
Every six months. I go to the hair stylist just to remove the split ends. My wife's hair also looks very good having a hair stylist remove the split ends and correcting the hair. A routine maintenance.
