Hi I have been lurking this site for the better half of 6 months and started growing out my hair since September 3, 2011. I have noticed that the hair directly above my ears won't grow out past 1 inch and this goes for the hair 1 inch above my side burn area. I'm very annoyed by this and was wondering whether others experienced this as well? Does this mean I'm gonna end up balding sooner? I really don't want to undercut this area because when I grew out my hair earlier in Dec 2010 and had that area undercut and wasn't satisfied how it looked, I cut my hair and started over. I usually wear my hair in a ponytail/bun when I'm working and those straggly hairs stick out and look unappealing. Sorry for the long post and thanks in advance for any answers
Hi Trill,
I believe those hairs grow the slowest. I think you just have to let them grow and catch up with the rest of your hair. However, I understand what you're talking about. I am still waiting for mine to catch up. You have wonderful looking hair and I sure hope you keep growing it. Please keep us updated on your progress! Great week to you my friend and welcome to the MLHH!

Thanks for the input, Ted I have a feeling its going to be a while before it catches up to my longer strands of hair.
Hi Trill,
I would just let your hair grow and just watch how it gets to looking better. I had my hair layered back in August of 2012 and the back is just now starting to fill in. I am trying to get it mostly all one length. Little by little, step by step. I do know that your hair will look spectacular when it gets longer. Please let it grow and keep us updated my friend!

The hair in those areas grows much slower for a lot of us men. The terminal length is also likely to be much shorter.
I have not trimmed those areas in several years and they are still very short compared to the rest of my hair. They don't reach into a pony tail or bun, and they like to poke out when the wind blows. All I can do is just smooth them back down. Depending on your hair type you might want to put on some kind of leave-in conditioner to help keep them in place. Personally, I just deal with them and I sometimes even have a laugh about it. Mine are probably about 1.5 to 2 inches long right now, they tend to gather into curls and poke straight out. (The short hair above my ears and on my nape has some curl to it despite the rest of my hair being super straight.)
Almost every man has a tiny bit of male pattern baldness (it's a hormone thing, after all), but this doesn't mean that it will progress to the final stages. In a lot of us this basically means that we will have shorter hairs in certain areas. We tend to not notice these subtle things until we grow our hair out.
Wow several years and only 2 inches? Lots of great info and input thank you kindly
What in the name of good fortune is happening here _
I let that hair grow for about five years and it never got past three or four inches long. Its texture was more like beard than like head hair, and every time that I was in the wind, I had two tufts sticking straight out to the sides like Bozo. Now I just trim it short and it looks much better.
A trim may be better than just full on shaving it off, thanks for the advice
Hi everybody,
While not exactly on topic here, this question reminded me of another one I´ve been wondering on for a while now.
When it comes to the "size burn" area, how short do you cut those hairs? And by that, I mean, how high up do you go with trimming those hairs? I try to let the hair there grow and put it behind my hear, then trimming almost in a straight line anything else that´s already considerend "beard" or "side burn", but I am curious about the rest of you.
Typically, that is not an area one sees in pictures, since most of them are with long hair being loose, and thus covering the ears.
Any input?
Hi Raul,
Since I wear glasses, I tend to cut my sideburns even with the place where my glasses frame sit on top of my ears. I don't know why, but it bothers me when the sideburns get too thick there. I guess because it makes my glasses seem to fit differently. I think once my hair gets long enough I won't need to worry about growing that hair to put it behind my ears. I think you and I do the same as far as trimming these hairs. Take care my friend!
