This is largely off-topic, but I'm too excited not to share: I was just promoted from my job as a tribal Public Health Nurse, to the position of Nurse Administrator of Community Health!
This is a big step for me professionally, and the fact that it occurred while my hair is still fully in the throes of the awkward stage should serve as encouragement to all men endeavoring to grow their hair long, but who fear the possible professional challenges that doing so might pose.
Cheers to all of you... have a great weekend!

Outstandingly good news, Val! And well deserved, I am sure!
Extremely happy for you, my friend! :)
Congratulations! Perhaps the universe is rewarding your decision to grow out your hair. I don't know whether you had this position in your sights but you obviously didn't let it become a determining factor in embarking on your journey to becoming a longhair. Lo and behold, you get the position as you're in the awkward phase!
So much of it is how we carry ourselves. I've worn my hair braided to work for so many years now I don't give it a second thought. There are always new people in the building including big wigs from the parent company who come from overseas to monitor things. I don't act any differently. I've yet to have one negative remark about my long hair.
Actually, this promotion came as a bit of a surprise. A new position opened up in another part of our facility, and my supervisor was selected for that, leaving her old position open. The opening was posted internally, and of the three people qualified to replace her, I was selected, and officially accepted the position this morning. I believe your comments regarding poise and overall strength of bearing are spot-on. Be who you are, fearlessly and shamelessly, and forge your own reality.
Love, peace, and bear grease...

Hi Val,
Many kudos to you my friend! I am very happy to hear of this news! It just goes to show you that hair length has nothing to do with job performance. Also, I think less ignorant bosses would tend to not worry about hair length when promoting people. Keep doing a great job Val and growing that wonderful hair! Have a great weekend my friend!
Ted
Hi Val,

Thank you, David! Today is officially my first day in the new role... here we go!

Thanks, John! Just when I start to wonder, "Is John B. still hanging around the MLHH?" there you are... lol. Nice to hear from you!

Val
Well Done ! I could not be happier for you.
Thanks for sharing the great news with your MLHH Family
Walter
Thanks for the kind congratulations... "Uncle" Walter! :)

Hi Val,
Well this is certainly great news for you and your family especially in this still bad economy. And the fact you received your promotion with awkward stage hair should be a great motivational factor for aspiring longhairs who may be lurking this board:)So by all means I'd say this is very "On" topic in that respect.Congratulations on the job and do keep us updated also on your hair progress my friend.Cheers!
Mârk
Thanks, Mark! I was honestly starting to get a little concerned that my "awkward" hair length might work against me in getting this promotion, but had resolved to keep both my hair and my previous position, if it came down to that. Fortunately, things worked out for the best in all aspects. I'll certainly keep you posted regarding my hair progress, and hope you keep posting motivational pics of your own great mane!

Hey, now that's something to be excited about. Congratulations! Our son just graduated nursing school in January and is now working as an LPN. His mom and I have never heard anything from him but "medicine" since he was in middle school; he always knew it was his calling, and I know he has truly found his niche because of his love for what he does. I'm a proud papa!
So, your news is in the area that I have special interest in, having followed my son's progress in it, too. Again, many congratulations and good wishes in your future endeavors.
Steve
Thank you, Steve, and congratulations to your son, as well! Nursing is an excellent field, with good job security and great diversity... there are countless directions in which to go, depending on one's interests.

Congratulations on your promotion! (And I love your new avatar!)
I do have to ask if the Tribal culture you work in is more accepting of long hair in general thus making the current state of your hair more of a non-issue? While is should be a non-issue for everybody, that often doesn't seem to be the case.

Dale's Facebook Page
Thanks, Dale! It's hard to say if working for a tribal agency had anything to do with the acceptance of my lengthening hair. Although a fair number of men in the community have long hair, all of my male coworkers are short-haired.
Take care,
Val
Thanks, Duncan! Also, I didn't mention it in your recent update thread, but MAN is your hair looking awesome!
Take care,
Val
Val--
That's quite an accomplishment and achievement no one can take away from you, and will always be a gold nugget under your belt. I cheer for you and proud of you, though I do not know you. However, being a Surgical Technologist, I understand the pressures and liability inherited under their wings as a promotion is accepted. Not only of that, but I am growing my hair out also and it seems we are lucky to have more freedom in the medical industry than other career fields. Though sooner or later my hair won't fit into a typical men's scrub hat, I'll have to wear the bonnet caps.... Lol!!!
Again congratulations, Val!
Tyler
Thanks, Tyler! You're correct about the medical field generally being quite accepting of men with long hair. When the time comes, you can wear your bonnet cap with pride!
Take care,
Val
Congrats on the promotion, Val!
