On the newsstand today I saw something called Details magazine with a front cover story about ageing rockers with bad hair.
Not all the 'culprits' had long hair, some of them had punk hair, but none of them had normal boring hair. More importantly, IMHO only one of them, out of about ten or so, actually had bad looking hair, about shoulder length with a serious case of the frizz. Sorry, can't recall who it was, he's not from a band that I'm into.
I tried to find the same story on their website, but without any luck, so maybe it's only in the print edition? Anyway, can't give you a link I'm afraid.
What annoys me about it is this. Why the h*ll should anyone expect rock musicians to suddenly become conventional in their old age? What would be the point? I admit this is a bit close to home, as I am in the same sort of age bracket and even used to sing in a band (although I never made more than the equivalent of five bucks from a gig and never had a recording contract).
But why does some self-appointed fashion advisor think we should all get boring haircuts just because we are old? It p*ss*s me off! They don't actually say what we should do with our hair, but all their targets are either punks or longhairs.
Hi Alun,
Ha ha, I used to have a subscription to that mag which was cheap as dirt as they were almost giving it away!LOL.Don't have it anymore but would to have liked to see that article.Guess if I'm at a Barnes & Noble I can check it out without purchasing it.However from what you are saying they are taking potshots at older men who still keep their hair long!Grrrrrr.I'll never understand this notion that once you reach a certain age your supposed to wear a short cropped or buzzed haircut.Hey, don't they understand there are guys who don't follow fashion trends?Oh well suppose that's what that mag is all about but still why not do a positive writeup on the virtues of having long hair:)I see nothing redeeming with a bald head especially on white folks like me!LOL.Anyway thanks for that heads up and I'll try and check out that article if I'm at the store but won't buy the thing;) Cheers....

Screw them. At the ripe old age of 58 i'm going to keep my long hair long until the day I die.
And I'll keep all the grey hair too.
I don't do buzz cuts or short hair and won't for the rest of my life.
Of course after looking at this magazine they'd take a fit about
my wearing cut off shorts most of the time. Well at the age of 58 i'll wear my hair the way I want to and wear the clothes I want.
Just another example of bad journalism/ it's the writers view, and he has that right. however. it is just his/her viewpoint and should be taken with no further impact. Just a many, if not more pics can be procured that prove the opposite. Look at all the members, of all ages, in this site with beautiful hair, of varied lengths. Feh! and Meh! Articles like that make good litterbox and budgie cage liners.
Never will understand who that certain group of people are who apparently have the clout to tell the entire population what's in style at a certain time--and actually have a following, with the masses going along with it. I, for one, wear my hair and clothing exactly like I want to. I could care less if some nut who edits a magazine of this type tells me it's wrong or right. Sure, I'm like everyone else in that I like it when a complement comes every now and then. But, it's myself that I have to please in the end. God, my wife, and myself are the only ones who really matter. God and my wife are not concerned about my hair, so that leaves me--and I like it the way it is!

Depends on your faith. According to the bible. God has a lot to say regarding hair and men actualy.
Leveticus
You shall not round off the hair on your temples or mar the edges of your beard.
Corinthians
Does not nature itself teach you that if a man wears long hair it is a disgrace for him.
Ezekiel
They shall not shave their heads or let their locks grow long; they shall surely trim the hair of their heads.

Hi SlowBrew,
Oh, there are plenty of people out there that will have you believe they are religious. But a lot of them are just hypocrites. I don't claim any particular religion. However, I do treat other people how I would like to be treated etc.
Ted
Hey Ted,
I very much agree. The books and scriptures of any one religon are so conflicting. The bible alone wants me to have short hair, long hair, funny styles, beards no beards. At the end of the day it was just the writings of opinions.
It's like in 2000 years people reading this board, and picking one of us guys hair washing routine as definitive evidence of the only way to go.
Hilarious.
I could care less what other people think of what I wear. If it
were up to them i'd have a buzz cut, always be wearing a suit,
have no moustache, etc. Since I don't listen to them, and do what I want to do, I have long hair, almost always wear cut off shorts, and have a moustache. And even if long hair goes out of style
i'll have the long hair until the day I die.
At 58 years old I don't care what others think.
Hello elektros,
I couldn't give a 4X for what shallow fashion people think. They can shove their "advice" up their rear end.
Long hair may never be in or out of fashion, it is outside that and is timeless!
I stopped having an "image" after about 21, and grew up and decided to just be me instead.
Cheers,
Duncan
Don't be fooled by the radio, the TV or the magazines
They show you photographs
Of how your life should be
But they're just someone else's fantasies
So if you think your life is complete confusion
Because you'll never win the game
Just remember that it's a Grand Illusion
Because deep inside we're all the same
Hi Ev,
I have always been a big Styx fan. This was a favorite song of mine. Speaking of which, most of them had long hair. Here they are with the late great John Pannozzo, their drummer.
Ted
Ted,
Thanks for the picture. Yeah, I really like this song too. I often listened to Grand Illusion, Pieces of Eight, Paradise Theater and Kilroy Was Here when I was in college. I remember how all the magazine and TV ads at that time were showing men with short hair, dressed in suits, living in expensive homes, driving fancy cars, with women who looked like they accidentally stepped off the set of Dynasty. I looked around campus and saw all the guys with long hair, ripped jeans, T-shirts and thought to myself, "Are the people who make these ads totally nuts? Do they really think that what they're depicting in these ads is somehow desirable or appealing to us? They've GOT to be joking." This song really resonated with me much more in the 80s than it did when it was released in 1977.
Hi Ev,
Excellent points you make. Gotta love that ad for Vitalis! By the way, as a big Electrovoice speaker fan, I love your username. Take care my friend!
Ted
Fantastic long hair can be maintained over a lifespan. MPB can be dealt with now with the medication and hair transplant technology. Hair coloring treatments are better and cheaper. Just have to stay slim and keep good health. The rock stars generally don't have a good record of maintaining themselves. They die earlier.
The media is OK with long hair, but on youth. A new longhair just started the Amazing Race. Malcom is back on Survivor. A few here and there.
