How long would the person's hair in these photos be, given the length of his ponytail?
Rough to say, mayb around 8-9 inches. It varies though and i actually just reached the ponytail milestone. If the tail includes the front ends then your hair would probably have to be a little bit longer, and there's always a possibility of some hairs slipping out of the hair tie.
What about this ponytail? The hairstyle itself was a mullet, only the sides and back were long, so bear that in mind.
It's hard to tell from the photo.
There are times when i'm tying my hair into a pony tail but double
or even triple wrap the the hair so that the pony tail appears much
shorter. The main reason I do this is to prevent damage to the hair.
I started growing my hair long in 1964, now that it is 49 years
later i'm extremely aware of anything that could remotely damage the hair. I love having my hair hanging loose and free, but I also hate getting the hair damaged, so if there is any chance of damage i'll tie the hair in a pony tail/braid/pig tails/etc.
Now that having been said if i'm doing something that could
potentially catch the tied hair and damage it i'll double or
triple wrap hair or bun it such that it appears like the hair
is shorter than it actually is.
Here's another photo from around the same time:
