Some may remember my big 7.5 inch cut last June. I was sick of lousy ends and wanted that blunt hemline. This was the result:
I made it my goal to get regular trims and to stay in a holding pattern for a while. I guess having a young child in the house along with many other activities can make one lose sight of such matters. I did get a couple of trims but I had to check on my blog to see that the last one was back in November. So, my hair has been pretty much ignored except for one notable difference: I've been using Ojon oil regularly after showering. I like it even better than coconut oil. The last few days I've refocused on my hair a bit and noticed that the ends seem better than they were last year, definitely not silky smooth and blunt like in the photo above but not terrible and possibly still a ways from terminal length.
It's gotten me thinking again: can I establish new length with reasonable ends? I dunno. I guess I'm looking to maybe give it one more shot before settling into that regular trim plan. I know I'm vacillating but hey, that's part of the fun - to enjoy the various twists and turns on our hair journeys. Mine has been going on long enough that there are fewer of them now.
I took these photos this evening to document where I'm at. There's been lots of length added from last June. I wonder what another year would bring with minimal trimming and continuing with Ojon oil....?
Hi Jason,
As usual, your hair is looking awesome! It looks like your hair would grow a good bit more in a year. Of course, the Ojon oil probably won't hurt either. I think with minimal trimming that hemline would stay nice and thick.
I am wondering if you have a pic of your hair when it was shorter i.e. trimmed around the ears. In other words, what would be considered a standard men's haircut. Also, do you find the application of the Ojon oil enhances your waves? When I use the oil, it seems to accentuate my waviness. I suspect my hair will look very similar to yours when it gets longer. Of course, I will have no problem with that! Your hair is looking fantabulous!
Please take of yourself, your wonderful family and your awesome hair! Great rest of the week and weekend to you my friend! Thanks for the update!
Ted
Hi Ted,
Thanks for the kind words. It would appear that the Ojon oil is doing something to protect my ends especially because I cycled outside through the whole winter. I do think there is some enhancement of my waves by using it. This is especially true before brushing it. Have you been using this specific oil or other types?
Thanks for saying that your hair would look similar to mine. I think yours is considerably thicker than mine and I don't know if mine could compare to the volume that yours will have. I'm also thinking that your hair is more coarse than mine and thus able to withstand more.
My last "regular" man's haircut was done in January 2004 (it's shown in the second entry of my hair blog). I still cringe when I see it but it had to be done at the time and marked a clean start for me. I have attached the photo.
Thanks again, Ted, and it's been so great to follow your progress and enjoy your company here!
Good Morning, Jason
I really appreciate the nice compliments about my hair! I probably do have a bit more volume than you. As for the oil, I try not to use that right now because I don't really want to encourage the waves. However, when my hair gets to be your length I will more than likely be soaking the ends in oil. You are correct about the coarseness of my hair. my hair can withstand daily washing without too much damage. I wash every other day right now. I use sulfate containing shampoos and conditioners which do not moisturize to discourage the waves. I am still trying to figure out how wavy my hair will be with added length. I love my waves, but like to see if I can adjust the amount of waviness with experimentation.
I had forgotten about that photo. I know what you mean about the cringing! Sorry about bringing it up again! Please take of yourself and your family! You all have a great weekend my friend! Oh and tell that cute little boy of yours hi for me!
Ted

Your hair quality is superb, right to the ends, Jason. From what I see, you are good for another year of unfettered growth for sure. You should grow it to your waist at least, as long as the quality holds. That is a miracle oil. Ojon oil? Are you sure that is not Argan oil? I have heard great things about Argan oil.
Scott
Hi Scott,
Back in my naive days of just assuming that my hair would keep on lengthening at the rate it did for the first 3.5 years of growing, my goal was classic length. Then I thought of belt. I'd be thrilled if I could achieve solid waist-length with quality ends. I'm really thinking of going for a year of minimal trimming and see where I end up.
As far as I know, Ojon oil is different than Argan. I have attached a photo of the bottle that I use. I got mine at a beauty supply store in a local mall. It's quite expensive but that small bottle goes a very long way as a little bit spreads nicely through damp hair. It's funny you term it as a miracle oil because that's what their ads claim too! Haha, I do tend to agree because my hair has given it a good test. Cycling in cold temperatures with wind takes its toll on hair.
Thanks for your comment and cheers to more growth!
Jason
Wow. Your hair is looking fantastic.
Keep up the good work.
Thanks, those are the old photos. I wasn't sure if you're thinking that's how my hair currently is.
Hi Jason ... whatever your doing = your doin' it right !!! ... simply let that beautiful mane grow forever - its exquisite !!! cheers CEM. :0)
Thanks! I'm quite picky on how my ends look but if they can look fairly decent, I would love to achieve more length. I'm appreciative of the inspiration your mane provides - talk about quality!!
Hi Jason,
Your haor really does look good here, and cheers to you for a program that really does work. I can see a huge improvement over the "pre June last year" trim, and yes, your ends and the overall length are extremely noticeable.
I have been very discouraged by my own hair lately, and that is whay there haven't been any photos from me for a long time. I am in serious need of a trim, and this oil regime you are using sure sounds interesting as well.(I need to ask you where you obtained that oil, and I assume it is online) I know that I haven't been giving my hair as much thought as I should lately, and perhaps the Feye's self trim would be a good start in improving the situation with my ratty ends.
Good luck with your future hair growing journey, and I am sure you can gain several more inches with no problem.
Take care,
David
Hi David,
What I like about my Ojon oil routine is that it's very quick and easy to do. I blot my hair after showering, apply a few drops to my palm and then mix it throughout my hair paying particular attention to the length. I found that the process was a little more involved with using coconut oil.
I feel like that big cut from last June did serve a purpose in that it gave me really healthy ends to start out again with. What I had before was not salvageable. Perhaps by treating reasonably healthy ends with oil, they can last longer but if they're already too wrecked I'm not sure if the oil would have helped.
It can be a challenge to find someone you can trust to trim your hair. Is there perhaps a family member who would be willing to just do a straight cut across the back? Or perhaps if you explicitly explained at a salon what you want done that might be an option. Of course, many swear by Feye's method. I just never seemed to be able to get it to work for me.
My wife actually got the oil at a local mall. I can't remember the name of the store but I think their website could direct you to a local store or I'm sure you could order it online. It might be worth a shot. It's given me renewed hope of achieving new lengths.
Thanks for your comment.
Take care,
Jason
Hi Jason,
Thank you for the pic, Jason, and perhaps, if you can find out what the store is so I can find the website, I would appreciate it. I have never used an oil program, apart from trying a "hot oil treatment" from VO5, and I did that several years ago.
Actually, my hair doesn't look a lot different from what yours looked like before you started your program, so it does appear that I will need to remove at least a few inches before trying some sort of oil program, and hopefully, I can find the oil that you used.
Also, I have been having difficulty finding a good "clarifying shampoo" lately. I used to use a decent clarifying shampoo every second/third wash, but that brand is not made any more, and who knows, that may be behind some of the problems I have been having lately with poor ends.
David
Hi Jason,
Just to let you know, I did manage to find some of this oil locally, in a local mall, about a 10 minute walk from my home. It was available at "Sephora", a cosmetics store selling high end products, most definitely not available at my local Walmart, lol! They actually carry the full line of Ojon products. The product was expensive ($30 for a 1.5 oz bottle, I assume it is a lot less in the USA), but since only a few drops at a time are needed, it should last for quite some time.
I will keep you updated as to how things go, and I probably will hold off on using the oil until the trim is done.
David
Hi David,
I asked Amanda and she said she also got it at Sephora. It was $24 for a 1.7 ounce bottle. I tend to agree that you should get the trim first and then begin regular applications. Good luck and let us know how things go!
Jason
Hi Jason, great to see you hair looking so good - reminds me of this time last year, just before I had mine cut off - but no regrets! In my opinion, the blunter ends look so much better, and the shine and condition both amazing - well done!
Best regards, Ian
Hi Ian,
Your hair was so amazing. Thanks for comparing mine to it!!
I do love that blunt hemline. I don't plan to allow it to get as ratty as it was before the June cut but if I can maintain a decent quality to my ends, then I would love to go for more length. It will be interesting to see how things develop.
Thanks again, Ian, and great to have you as part of our community.
Jason
Damn, I love how your hair looks sooo much! It seems to be so fine and has lots of nice waves in it. And yeah, current state is just perfect - the hair is healthy. Wanna check that oil soon :)
Thanks for your post!
Serge.
Thanks a lot Serge. I appreciate the waviness because it gives the appearance of more volume. It's interesting how the waves come and go depending on my hair's condition and the humidity in the air.
Best wishes on your continuing hair growth!
Greetings Jason!
Wow, its been awhile since I've seen this type of an update from you my friend.Have to say your current hair is looking grand so not at all bad considering some neglect. You mentioned Ojon oil as I've never heard of that one.How different is that from say Jojaba or our old friend coconut oil?I haven't used Jojaba in ages and just about stopped with the coconut oil.Last time I used coconut I just applied a little to my boars bristle brush at the tips and ran that through my hair.Have to say it felt so silky after that:)Before I put the oil in I could tell how dry my ends were by the way the brush went through my hair down there.I do use a conditioner with Argan oil which I like a lot.
As for my own hair I'm still doing the henna treatments every eight weeks just to cover the new growth.Kind of interesting as I can clearly see how much my hair grows over that eight weeks since its "marked" by the henna. No guess work there.I always thought my hair has stopped growing, since I'm not gaining any more length, but it clearly is.Guess its either from breakage or just shedding.I haven't had a professional trim/cut to my hair since 2005.I'm just too paranoid about it so stopped going and figured to let nature take it course:)Anyway fantastic update Jason and do treat that great mane to a nice weekend:)Cheers
Mârk
Hi Mark,
Yes, my updates are far fewer than they used to be. I miss that month to month excitement of new lengths but there are still joys to be had by experimenting and trying to achieve the full potential of one's hair. I have tried so many things but henna has not made the list. I still think about it and I haven't ruled it out. It's worked so well for you that it has made me keep considering it.
Ojon oil has been unique for me. I think everyone's hair reacts a bit differently to the various oils. Jojoba just coated my hair and weighed it down. Coconut was good and my hair absorbs it well but I haven't found that it protects to the degree that the Ojon oil does.
That is the cool thing about dyeing - you can clearly see the new growth. Terminal length is a funny thing as there have been several that have thought they reached it only to see some gradual increases over time. Perhaps you too will see this. I'm sure the benefits of the henna will increase your chances of this.
Have a great weekend too and thanks!
Jason
You've got gorgeous hair, and I'm sure a lot of your neighbors and friends are quite envious of your beautiful long mane. I can understand wanting to eliminate some of the frayed ends every so often, but please try to keep the trimming to a minimum. I wish you all the best in your efforts to see additional length as time goes by. Hopefully, terminal length is a long way away for you.
Hi Marco,
Thanks for your compliments. So many longhairs have to weigh the balance between length and quality ends. Perhaps I can achieve new ground with each by continuing this routine. I plan to go a good while before any more trimming.
Jason
TERRIFIC pics, Jason -- and I enjoyed reading your musings!!
My partner likes Ojon products as well. The smell is also very easy-on-the-nose!
Give the "Search and Destroy" method of chasing after individual split ends a try.... I find that very early morning lighting coming through a window, for example, is the most helpful for seeing the spits right away (also very late afternoon lighting, or even just winter sunlight -- the point being whenever the angle of the sun is low in the sky).
I don't always have the quiet, uninterrupted time for doing this ritual myself; so I can only imagine how difficult it might be on you having a young child in the house! But in any case, if you find the time, it can definitely cut down on having to go to a professional stylist as often.
Thanks for sharing your wonderful update, Jason!
"Onward & Downward!" (Or once you might reach terminal, "Onward & Onward!" - LOL)
- Ken
Hi Ken,
I agree about the smell of Ojon oil. It's great and makes the application a pleasure.
That's a good point about S & D. My hair is kind of strange in that I don't often notice too many splits but still have wear on the ends. Any splits I notice, I do cut. The Ojon oil so far has cut down on the worn look. It might be a good idea for me to use the S & D method to not only look for splits but any particularly worn individual ends.
I'm encouraged by your hair because you've gradually noticed a lengthening. I believe at one time you thought you were at terminal. No doubt your S & D routine, combined with lots of patience have produced these results.
Thanks for the compliments and onward indeed!
Jason
Hair is looking great Jason! Your ends seem pretty good to me and thick. Maybe I ought to try some of that new oil you're using. I use coconut oil on my ends still and it seems to work good enough already.
Hi Mark,
So far so good on the ends. I've always wanted more length so my cutting decision wasn't based on wanting a shorter length but rather not liking the quality of the ends. If I can get both ideals to meet in the middle, I'd be very happy!
Coconut oil is definitely good stuff. My hair just seems to react a little better to the Ojon oil.
Thanks!
Jason
Hi Jason!
You hair is looking great as always, and I really think the trimming you did helped get the ends looking tons better! Guess it's up to you now to decide if you're happy with the length and want constant trims or not, I would definitely stick to that, but it's definitely personal taste :)
Thanks for being the inspiration that you are, my friend! All well to you and your beautiful little family!
Hi Raul,
Thanks! I hear you about the trims. I'll definitely be going that route if my ends return to the ratty way they were last June before the big cut. But in the meantime it will be interesting to see if I can break into some new length territory. We shall see! It's really part of the fun of having long hair.
Thanks for sharing your excitement at the early stages of the growing phase. It's great to vicariously experience the joy all over again through your enthusiasm and sharing your progress.
Jason
