Responding to Jason´s post here a few mins ago, and mentioning his cute blonde and curly kiddo, made me think of some old pictures my mother sent me a few years back, from back when I was 2 years old... and lo and behond, this dark haired guy learned that back then, he too, had blonde, curly locks! :D
I think it´s really funny how the pigment in our hair changes with age, and how it´s even more obvious where I live now- here in Scandinavia, as most kids at kindergarten age have very bright blonde hair, some almost to the degree of white, and when they hit pubery it slowly start turning into ash light brown and even darker later in life.
Here is a pic of yours truly at age 2, taken back in Romania in 1985.
Then, I will post a picture of me from about 2 years ago, taken in Oslo, when I was sporting my asimmetry hairstyle and had it up in a little tail. Definitely not blonde anymore! Hehe :D
Taken as I said around 2 years ago. I guess you can tell why I felt I had to cut it all off in order to grow it long again, as in that state it would have been around 5-6 inches on top, and skin shaved on the sides and back. I think it would have taken AGES to get the sides to be long enough for that ´normal´ponytail :P
Don't knock it, you look cool in that photo!
Thanks, MG!
Appreciate the kind words! Can't wait to get back to long hair again though! 1.5 year or so and counting! hehe
I know it gets A LOT of hate on MLHH, but I have always LOVED the undercut (shaved back and sides and long on top). I rocked one for YEARS (with the top grown out to the middle of my back). I'm currently growing my hair long again but plan to have it all one length this time tho.
Hey Element,
I had the same exact plans, to grow the undercut all the way down to under my chin, and make it in an assimetric angle as well, but I somehow always felt something "was missing", you know? Love having the sides shaved, it feels more masculine in a way, but not being able to really call it long hair per-say, made me shave it all off, and work from scratch again!
I hope you don't hold it against me but I am still rocking my
undercut. As you say the mere mention of the word undercut
usually causes a severe reaction here. I'm even playing around
with the long hair now just for the fun of it. If I'm not showing the undercut I usually part it in the middle and comb
my hair straight down. The undercut is not noticable then.
I recently had my hair trimmed somewhat so that my front hair
is the longest and then it kind of slopes up to the back just
for a different look. I strive for uniqueness in my appearance.
And that's all that really matters, MG...
that YOU feel content and happy about your hair. I've always strived for a unique look, and tried pretty much everything- from bleaching to coloring, from short to long to braids to completely shaven off.
Now I feel that really nice, long hair is not something one sees so often either, and I am not 16 anymore, so blue hair won't look as appropriate anymore, so nice, whole, long hair seems like a great choice to me. At the same time, you have to remember to do what YOU want to do- your hair, your life! Be proud and sport it like a rockstar! =)
Awww... and here I was looking forward to seeing you in blue!
hehe.
And seriously Raul, Thanks for your support!!
Not a bad hairstyle for you Raul but I still preferred the traditional long hair which is what I sported all my younger years. Many years ago I did undercut my hair some but just those hairs that never seemed to go anywhere in regards to length.Anyway love the trip down memory lane Raul;) LOL Cheers
Mârk
Thanks Mark, though I completely agree with you... I want the whole head same length again, and that is why back in November I cut almost all my hair off, to start at a buzzcut and work from there!
I want to get back here, then surpass it bigtime!
Mark,
I've really enjoyed the times that you've posted some "retro" hair pics showing the various looks you've had. Would you by chance have a photo of that undercut you had?
Jason
I've always had an interest in undercuts. I like how they emphasize the hair on top - the exact opposite of the mullet which I don't care for.
Back when I was under the repressive hair rules in the religion my only way to have longish hair was to have it that way on top because I could hide it. I did various experiments pushing it as far as I could go. Here's a pic of me with some form of a self-produced undercut! LOL.
As an aside, I think you have a really cool hairline. I believe you mentioned before that you don't care for it being asymetrical but I like the look. Certainly you have an enviably low and thick hairline! I have a small section on the right side of my hairline where it juts forward. I always considered it a bit of "bonus" hair. LOL. I used to take regular pictures of my hairline to make sure it wasn't receding anywhere. - confessions of a true hair obsessive. :D
Undercuts are indeed fun, and mine comes from this style right here. True, it's colored black, it's hot iron straightened and geled and serumed like a mo'fo', but I thought it looked really good for a few years. Ladies seemed to agree with me, hehe.
I like your undercut as well, though it was much different. You actually had longer hair in the back, and it was cut much lower than mine. I could never get a ponytail at the 'back' of my head, since the shaved area was going really high up, all the way up to where the 'crown' of the head begins.
From one hair obsessive to another, my hairline is pretty much one thing that I worry and obsess about most. It's definitely not straight, and the left side is definitely a tad higher than the right side, but comparing to older pictures from back when I had long hair, it seems it's always been like that. I don't know, but I tend to be so scared of it, that I check EVERYONE'S hairlines, whether in real life or on TV, men or women. Deifnitely big variation in these. As long as I don't see that left side receeding any, I guess I will be fine.
Still, I am a fanatic, and I like the thought that you know exactly how that feels, hehe ;)
Dude, honestly, it's great to read this. *I'm not alone.* :D
Starting in my mid-teens, I began a period of intense worrying about MPB. I even went for a consultation with a friend who truly was balding. The guy looked at both of us and said 'look at this bastard!' referring to me. I wasn't trying to be a jerk. I was genuinely concerned.
Another time I went to a clinic run by a hair transplant company and again was examined. I learned there about the benefits of the ingredient in Proscar and how some were able to convince their doctors to prescribe it for hair. You would break the tablets up into four sections. This was before Propecia came on the market for the specific purpose of preventing hair loss. When I was 25 I actually convinced my doctor to prescribe it and took it for a while before backing off.
Gradually, my fear subsided. The longer you go without significant loss, the better your chances of not losing much. Some literature pinpoints the age of 26 as being key. Since you're almost 30, you are very unlikely to experience a great degree of loss at this point. I don't even give it much thought anymore. I also automatically analyze everyone's hair when I see them. Is there hair loss? What kind of hairline do they have? Thickness? If thick and short, what a waste!, etc...
Here is a photo from one of my 'hairline analysis' sessions!
Bromance in the air! I am not alone in my fascination with hair! YAY! :P
I've never actually given it so much thought as I do now, that I have begun re-growing my long hair in my late 20's. The facts you mention are indeed very encouraging, and I pray to whoever is up there that I turn grey LOOOONG before I notice any symptoms of MPB.
I really appreciate you posting that picture of your hairline, for two reasons:
1. It's intersting to see how we really are different in not only hair texture, color, thickness and potential for terminal length, but also in the hairline height and form. I think mine is a few cm's lower, but it's definitely got that "weird" shape where it is circular on the sides, and flat and straight in the front. Will make sure to post a picture later on to show what I mean. Either way, the fact that it's completely symmertic has been freaking me out, but I will be crossing my fingers and hope that it stays the way it is now for at least another 30-40 years, if not longer! :)
2. I've ALWAYS been conflicted about the height one ought to trim one's sideburds, or the place where the long hairs go behind the ears, and the others get cut short often. In the pic you've posted, it seems you are or have been trimming them quite high, as I am trying to do now, and I am glad to see it that, seeing as I love your hair, in a very manly kinds way, hehe :D
Either way, good to know there are more "hair crazies" out there, and it ain't just me, Jason! Thanks for these fantastic posts!
LOL, bromance indeed!
As you've probably gathered by now, I tend to be on the obsessive side. It's interesting that I have thoroughly analyzed the question about where to cut sideburn hair too. The first hairline photo I showed you was from before I grew my hair long so it's not an accurate representation. The photo above shows me trying to figure out where to trim the sideburns and what hair there has long potential. Most guys come to find that the hairs in that general area don't have as long a terminal length as the rest of your head hairs so it's not the worst thing if they get cut. I try to err on the side of caution and run my beard trimmer from my cheek up, sliding it over the skin rather than trying to cut a straight line across.
Getting back to the hairline issue... Yes, you lucky guy, your hairline is considerably lower than mine! I inherited my mother's hairline which was very high all of her life. Long ago I scoured through old pictures to find some that in some way would show my hairline in childhood. You'll see in the photos below that both sides were high from an early age. Those photos have brought me endless relief! When I was 24 I asked my mother to take hairline photos of me and they showed the hairline was the same. I'd say the last picture from 2004 is also pretty much the same. So the good news is that my hairline hasn't receded noticeably but the bad news is that I have a natural high hairline. Ah well, so long as it stays put. I also highlighted that part of my hairline that goes forward compared to the rest. I examine it on a regular basis to make sure it stays that way. You definitely have more of those zigs and zags than I do (which I think is cool).
LOL, can we agree that I'm even more obsessed than you?!!
Allright, I ain't agreeing on nothing, if only on the mere fact that you HAVE put quite some thought, time, money and nerves into this, and you have much better visual aid skills than me! Hehehe
I tried taking a picture of my hairline right now, so don't mind the red eyes and stuff, early in the morning here in the CET! :)
As you are pointing out, I've gont lots of places where these tiny hair stuick out of the hairline, both downwards and upwards. As well as the rounder areas on the sides, and to top it all off, the left one is definitely a bit higher than the right one...
But, to sum all this mess up, I guess we ain't symmertrical either way, and it's all completely normal. As you are saying, as long as it won't recede anytime soon (or at all, I hope), I am all good :)
Haha, well, I guess it's safe to say we both don't take our hair for granted and, hey, there are worse things to be obsessed about!
You have a hairline to be proud of and the incredible thickness should translate into a tremendous terminal length potential. I like what you said in another post about the fact that you've explored so many ways of wearing your hair but have now settled on growing it all long. I feel that even just satisfying one's curiosity about what your terminal length is would be the ultimate in hair exploration. Even if you should decide to cut it shorter at some point, it would be cool to see how long it would get.
What does CET stand for?
All I can say is way cool man! Love the look here! But I want to see you with long hair!
Ted
First off, when one of you mods see this, please delete the upside down picture and it's comment ;)
This is me right now... A bit over 5 months in, and newly washed and oiled with argan oil (about 7 hours ago, before going to sleep last night).
Have a great Tuesday all of you! :)
Thanks a bunch, Justin, as always! ;)
Wow, your beard has really come in nicely! The argan oil appears to be working well. Might as well start early in the journey to keep your hair as healthy as possible. That hair is going to be on your head for a very long time!
Thanks for the kind words, Jason! :)
The beard sure is growing around 10 times faster than the head hair, I guess that stems form my eastern european genes... we are hairy people, and our beards grow like there's no tomorrow :D This is actually my 2nd beard, after having shaved the old one off abour 3 weeks ago, and this having grown since! I am going to try to trim it after a while, to keep it growing in length and not in width (as in down the face, not to the sides. Amish look? No thank you :P).
Argan oil seems to be working great to keep my hair silky smooth and soft, but I am a bit unsure whether oil is good for me at all. Rather strangely, I have a very dry scalp, and yet, very oily hair. That means I get flakes in my hair if I don't wash it regularly, as well as very oily hair (even without the argan oil or other products). What sort of a shampoo and conditioner I need then? God knows. It's never easy with me, hehe.
Hi Raul,
This is yet another great pic of you and your hair. Your hair is really coming in thick and has rich color. I am seriously looking forward to your mid-back length hair. Please keep it growing!
Ted
Thank you, Teddy! :)
Again, you would be one to talk about thick hair with rich texture and deep color... can't wait to see you puting that bad boy in a braid, a samurai bun, or just letting it flow in the wind... those will be good days :)
Thanks, I most definitely will! Working towards the 6 month mark now!
Hey Raul,
Wow, that's interesting seeing you in that 1985 pic as a child being at that time I was already working, going to clubs to see metal bands,as I was in the early years of adulthood, around where you are in life today:)Of course you already had fantastic hair at that young age so now you can relive that magic as you slowly become a longhair again:)Cheers my friend.
Mârk
Hey Mark,
That is rather funny, how young and old is really nothing more than a relative term. I often feel very old in comparison to many people I work with or hang out with, at almost 30, and yet, I make others feel a bit older as well it seems, hehe :D
Either way, thanks for the compliment, and I can definitely feel mass on my head. It sure as hell ain't long, but it's HIGH, BROAD and fluffy! It's ALIVE and I'm loving it! hehe
Great photo! I love seeing the different points in a person's hair history and to note the various changes along the way.
It's interesting how so many do start out with light hair only to have it turn darker. I kept my blond until I was about 12. This is me with my dad when I was probably about three. My hair is similar to my son's though he has even more curls at this point.
Great photo as well! And damn, you look so much like yourself (oddly enough, eh?) and definitely have a hair texture and color close to your son's... fun stuff to see, thanks for sharing, Jason! :)
Hi Raul,
I am just loving these pics and the background info behind them! You just had to make me dig out some old pics of myself! Enjoy! I guess...Here is me walking with my Dad on the beach in Hawaii when he was stationed there in the Navy. Hopefully the pic comes out okay.
Ted
Beautiful picture of a father and son sharing a magical moment, Ted :) Funny how most of us have such a pic... here's mine, around 2 years old as well!
Hi Raul,
Ha! Now I know where you get your good looks from! You always take great pics as I consider you to be photogenic! This is a wonderful pic and I thank you for posting it!
Unfortunately my dear Dad passed away back in 2002 at the ripe old age of 59 years old. He did live a full life having served 20 years in the U.S. Navy submarine service. He attained the rank of E-8 and traveled the world. I am very proud of his service and miss him terribly. One day we shall meet again and continue our journey together. Bless you and your father. Great pic bud!
Ted
Thanks for sharing the heartwarming photo, Ted. I'm sorry you lost your dad when he was only 59.
On a much lighter note, when I see people with hair as thick as yours I'm interested to see their parents. It looks like your dad was blessed with a luxuriant head of hair and he passed some of those genes on to you!
Hi Jason,
Thanks for the very kind message! MY Dad actually had very straight jet black hair until he passed away. My Mom has dark red fairly straight hair. Dad's hair was thinner than Mom's. It is neat because my Mom fully supports me growing my hair and thinks it's cool:) I send her pic updates and she gets a kick out of them. As you can probably tell, I was raised by parents who were open minded and tolerant. I am glad for that. Live and let is and shall remain my mantra for life.
The main thing that I dislike about my hair is all the crazy hairs sticking out at the sides. Did your hair look like mine before it became all one length? I think you and I have similar hair and wanted to ask. Right now I am getting frustrated with my hair because it looks like a big choppy mess. I am really hoping it lays down flatter in the future. Any and all sage advice welcomed! Great day my friend!
Ted
Here is a better pic of me at about 6 years of age. This one should look better.
Straight hair? On Ted?! Are you sure that is you, and your alternative universe evil (yet straight haired) twin?!
Hi Raul,
I actually think my hair might be somewhere between 1C and 2A type. Type 1C is long waves and 2A is starting to have more S waves through the length. If I comb my hair while it's wet, the waves can be pulled out. We shall see when it gets longer. Of course, I am happy with it whatever it does. As long as it grows!
I don't think the world is ready for an evil twin of me! Take care.
Ted
Here is a pic from when I was at Lackland Air Force base basic training 22 years old.
A happy man with a happy heart... definitely one of your best traits, Ted! Not much of a long hair in that time, I see :D
Many thanks Raul! I definitely don't miss that buzz cut one bit! I do thank the Air Force for their superb training and helping me be a better person! Take care bud!
Ted
And here is the last one of me just a few minutes ago. Major apologies for the spamming of the board! I blame it on Jason and Raul! Hehe:)
Damn Ted, you're starting to get some really nice length there! Congrats! :)
And yeah, trust me, I know exactly how "slow" it feels since we have wavy hair, and all these lucky guys with fine, straight hair can seem to be showing their growth a lot quicker than us. But you know what? Waves and curls are pretty damn awesome as well, and flow just as nice in the wind! =)
Looking great, keep on growing, buddy!
Not spam at all!! I'm impressed as I see a definite difference in length. You appear to have a good growth rate in addition to the incredible thickness. Onward!
Much appreciation, Jason! I am definitely starting to feel like I'm entering longhairdom! I just can't wait to feel my hair falling down my back! And yes, onward we go! Great day friend!
Ted
Yes it is a great feeling to without a shirt during the summer
and have long hair cascading down the back. And it feels even
greater when the hair is waist length or even longer.
(Back in the 80s my hair was knee length, I then trimmed it bck to waist length. Either way it felt really good to have i
cascading down my back.).
Happy hair farming.
Do you have a photo of when your hair was at knee-length?
No I don't. That was before digital photography, back then
we had to either send it out to be developed or use a
darkroom.
besides alot of the photos I took back then were for the
college newspaper.
Here's a pic of me aged 2 and a half
