So ok, the other day I caved. I got a haircut. My girlfriend doesn't like long hair and was saying I looked "homeless" etc so just to appease her I got it cut 4 days ago. But I want to grow it. Here's how it looks now.
A question for you guys:
Going by the length of it now, how long will it take to reach shoulder length?
The average growth time is one-half an inch per month. Do the math.
My hair is about an inch away from waist length. I've been actively working on it for four years now.
Steve
My dad measured the top of the sides and the back. In the sides six inches from now would be my chin. In the back six inches would be the base of the neck. So if I keep at it and don't let her or anyone else deter me, I probably could have it all shoulder length by the end of next year, if not a bit earlier.
Hi Mr. Hair,
As a person who sorely resents intolerance, I am dismayed by your situation. I sincerely hope you can resolve your differences with your girlfriend and get on with your life. As the other guys have responded with very eloquent replies, I will keep mine short.
You should explain to your girlfriend everything you desire to do with your life. This includes growing your hair. If she refuses to understand, I would probably politely tell her that we need to part ways. I know love(?) is strange, but I believe if you put her on the spot she might take a position favorable to you. After all, you are NOT MARRIED to her.
So, as you said above, don't let your girlfriend or anyone else deter you! Let's get to it and grow your hair! Your hair looks like it will be lovely if you grow it out. Please try to do what you want to do with your hair. Enjoy the journey and have fun! You only live once and there's no time for intolerance from other people. Have a great weekend my friend and I wish you much success in your journey!
Ted
Said girlfriend and I broke up for a number of reasons, less than a week after I caved and got the haircut on the 6th (the haircut pictured in the first post). So, she managed to make me cut a few months of growth off before going.
So, with her out of the way, can you guys give me a reasonable timeline of how long it will take to get shoulder length hair?
It will never reach shoulder length if you allow your girlfriend to control you like that.
Hair grows at 1/2 inch per month. You can do the math.
I would add we have alot of homeless around here and every single
one of them has short hair. So that blows that theory out of the
water.
I would also add that around here there are a number
who are homeless and also work a full time job. A quarter of the homeless are veterans. A number of homeless have families that are also homeless.
I would also add that here in the big city you can't always tell
who the homeless are, a number of the homeless here to a homeless shelter at night, get fed, get shower and then leave the shelter the next day.
--------------------------
I have a friend who lives in his car. He works about 30 hours per week at a low paying job and maybe another 10 at odd jobs. If a person works hard (and he does) they are entitled to a roof over their head. In this modern day and age, there needs to be affordable rentals available, price scaled to low wages.
If this trend continues, more than half the working population will eventually be living on the street. People will become angry at some point and we could have a second civil war. (People nowadays will refuse to endure 1930s depression conditions.) If this were to happen nationwide, it would be a juggernaut that no law enforcement agency or military operation could possibly contain. This will be a war of poor vs rich. By sheer numbers and desperation the poor will likely win.
I really hope America wakes up and fixes this problem before it is too late, resulting in full scale civil war. I am worried.
Scott
I agree so much with you Scott. They refuse to call what is going on now a Depression, but they do not count the unemployed people who have "given-up" looking for jobs when they come out with the numbers. Guess these people don't count anymore. As for "Cost of Living?" Two important things are not equated into what we are told. Left out is: (1.)Food and (2.) Energy costs. How can one live without food?
Today the Contrails/Chemtrails have begun once again after about a week off. Photo was taken 2 hours ago. More activity non-stop since then and we are starting to get a goodly dose as of now.

Core inflation rate needs to be put aside and people who work as well as those on social security need to get increases based on the true increased living cost.

If I understand correctly, chemtrails are not only to stop/slow global warming, but also to reduce human fertility to control excess population growth. I would like to know if there is chemtrail spraying over India, China, and Africa. Especially China and India have a real problem with overpopulation. I have also heard that aerial spraying can be used to vaccinate people against infectious diseases too.

I would point out in a number of cities rents are too high.
In a number of cities you could get as mortgaga for about
$600 a month but end up paying $1500-$2000 to rent an apartment.
Part of that a number of apartments have been converted to
condos that sell in the $375,000 neighborhood. Add to that they don't build single family houses now, they build huge
condo complexes where the condo units sell for $375,000 or $450,000. In many cities life long residents have been forced out of the neighborhood they've lived in.

If this were to happen nationwide, it would be a juggernaut that no law enforcement agency or military operation could possibly contain. This will be a war of poor vs rich. Very possible.
A good portion of the problem is wages have been stagnant for
many years now.
So ok, then in other words, she doesn't like you "just as you are" for the very person you are and does not respect your right to express yourself as YOU would like by having long hair? Maybe you should tell your gf that you don't like her hair the way it is now and see how she likes that. Sure, go ahead. Give it a try. Time for her to "cave-in" too.(tit for tat)
Well, does this mean that every person that is unfortunate enough to be in a "Homeless" state is because of some kind of sin to be ashamed of? What about a person that has been wiped out by any number of things and finds themselves on the street? (It does happen all the time you know.) Just what is a "homeless look" anyway? If you cannot explain it to all of us, then have her do it. (I always LOVE to learn new things.)
Wait! Why appease her? Is her importance of such a lofty self-styled magnitude as to justify having to be appeased? Does she appease you as well?
Well wait again: You got it cut but you want to grow it? Your gf has told you she doesn't like long hair and you cave-in to "appease." Besides all of this, she doesn't like the "homeless" look. (A look as of yet not defined.)
Very nice for short hair.
"If" you no longer feel that you have to "appease," it should take about 2 years or less of non-stop growing. I must caution you however that you may be accused of looking "homeless" in the eyes of such a kindly devoted dearly beloved loving and most precious sweetheart who lacks 100% total respect for your own choice as to how YOU would like to wear your very own hair.

Basically she and I have been have been having a few bad months and things have been rocky....There's a lot of stuff going on in my personal life that I'd rather be with her than be alone, right now. But I do want to grow my hair, even if it does cause a fight.
Would it really take as much as two years? You don't think I could have ponytail length hair let's say in just the back and sides (akin to a mullet) in just a year--May 2014?
I mean something like in this pic, in a year's time?
Probably not. hair grows at 1/2 inch per month, that is six inches a year. Now i'm not sure how big your skull is six inches
is all the growth you'll get in a year..
I don't know your girlfriend, and I don't really like to judge people I haven't actually met, but she sounds like a bitch. I've said it before and I'll say it again, some people just hate seeing others be happy. They'll try to change you, try to make you conform. They're what we call "psychic vampires". They suck everything good out of you; all your joy, your will, your strength, and leave you an empty husk.
If someone tells you they don't like your appearance, that means they have a deeper reason for not liking you, and your appearance is the easier thing to say. Even if you change, they'll usually find some other reason to dislike you, and by then the damage is done. Your body belongs to YOU and no one else! When my family bothers me about my tattoos or my hair, they give me that old "your body is a temple" schtick. I tell them "My body IS a temple, it's just not dedicated to the same god yours is."
Long story short, sit down with her and tell her how much she's hurt you with this. If she isn't willing to listen, toss her like a bad egg. The world's bad enough without having to hang around with jerks.

This is an absolutely brilliant reply, Septet. Excellent advice. Kudos.
Scott
Thing is, she wasn't always. She met me at probably the worst time she could've met me in my life. Sort of like, a "right person, wrong time" scenario. There's a LOT of things going on with me and in my life and those around me that makes me sort of less than my ideal self. Basically, a lot of resentment built up on her end because of me, because of things I don't do or fail to do, things I really should do but for this reason or that, can't. I come from a very dysfunctional family, and she hates them and feels they ruined me, and in a lot of ways they did, but they're still family, and we fight a lot when I try to make apologies for them.
She was very insecure and controlling in some ways, though, even before the resentment set in. She didn't like me going on Facebook and was uncomfortable with the fact that the vast majority of my friends were female and I had to flush a lot of them. A lot of the problems between us are (objectively speaking) my fault, though.
Your picture is a perfect example of the conflicts we get into. Literally. I used to dress really casual, wear cartoon T-Shirts. For example I wanted to buy a Beavis & Butthead t-shirt and she was like "Are you five?" and was all grossed out at me. She likes me wearing stuff like polos, button down shirts, stuff that isn't "immature".
But it's gotten to the point where she's gotten physically violent with me. She'll hit; she even hit me in the neck. I don't hit her--I don't believe in hitting women morally. But it's just all messed up but right now my life is so messed up that either way I look, it's bad. I feel trapped, but she offers some temporary escape from things, which is in part why I haven't dumped her. The other part is I want to see if we can remove some of the toxicity and come to a sense of more mutual respect.
She hates your family? No matter what members of your family are guilty of, the girl of your choice should at least be cordial to them. If for no other reason, out of respect for you. If you should happen to get married, will she expect you to break ties with them just because she happens to say so?
My wife and I have been married for close to 28 years. She's the best friend I have, bar none. Long hair is not her favorite style. BUT, it was her idea that I grow it out in the first place, because she knew it'd always been something I'd always wanted to do. She loved me enough to want my desires to be fulfilled. Also, as far as clothes go, she wants me to be me. No controlling or guilt-tripping if I wear something she doesn't like. I'm a lucky, lucky guy. And I know it.
I guess my point is that I do not know your girl friend. But, if she's trying to control you, is hitting you, telling you what to wear and not wear, and even saying she hates your family -- dude, you can do better!
Steve
Enough. You need to take control of your own life - best start would be dumping the bitch.
And to answer your question, 18 months
Hi Septet,
You always come up with excellent replies! I don't believe I could have said it better! May we hope Mr. Hair can have success growing his hair and enjoying his life as he sees it!
Ted
It will take about 1 to 2 years depending on your growth rate (about 1/2 inch a month). As for the girlfriend issue, you will have to decide what is more important to you, your hair or the girlfriend. If it doesn't work out with your girlfriend, scroll on down to a post on this site dated 3/28/13 (or around that time). There are plenty of girls that like long hair.
Been in a similar situation, 'cept she wasn't as...visceral, I guess would be the appropriate word here. Thing is, it was done since she never saw me with short hair, and it would make her happier than a pig in, well..you get the idea. Long story short, she parted ways and it was tie to get back to business. As of now it's been just under 14 months and I have a potential in the works who actually adores long-haired men. Personally it seems like it's an abusive relationship that you need to get out of and to recollect yourself.
On topic though, yes, hair is measured to grow at 1/2 inch every month, but general consensus aside we must also remember there are other conditions that come into play, no matter how miniscule the growth is. It really depends on your genetics, texture, hair type, diet, products, and activity. Promote the idea of exercise since it's noy only good for the body but it actually does help with your scalp (or so I've heard from the grapevine) and scalp massages increases blood flow to said scalp which may contribute to hair growth.
Really, as long as you keep yourself occupied you'll be surprised how fast time flies and how fast your hair grows. I the meantime it would be strongly suggested to consider the option of opting out of an unhealthy relationship, re-gaining self confidence, and to put yourself back on the market. Everything comes to fruition sooner or later, my friend.
It's going to take a year at the very least... assuming no trims, and your hair goes straight down.
Stick to your guns.
As for your girlfriend situation, not that you should be cold-hearted, but you should remember the sunk-cost fallacy. It doesn't matter how long you two have been together or what happened in the past, the only thing that does matter is the future (expected) value of the relationship in respect to its cost. You may use past experiences to make or mold expectations for the future, but under no circumstances should you try to 'recoup your wasted efforts' -- call it a loss and move on, either with the same woman, a different one, or alone. The link below (section 4) describes it a lot better than how I explained it.
(In case I didn't explain sunk costs well enough)
Another human being who has no respect for your desires, who hits you, who insists you dump other friends, who feels uncomfortable if you use social networking (Facebook), who lacks even the basic humour of you wearing a Beavis & Butthead T-shirt, who is so insecure that she insists you wear boring polos ... is NOT a FRIEND at all, girl or otherwise!!!
If you are going through problems in your life right now, the very LAST thing you need is a relationship with someone who has even more fundamental problems than you do.
You need someone who respects and loves you for YOU, who YOU are, not some clone of her own fantasy that she wants to mould you into.
The "mullet" style you mentioned (http://www.mlhh.org/messages/301601.html) is not good enough. It sounds like a sad compromise - neither one thing nor the other - which in the end will please no one, neither you coz it's not really the long hair you want nor her coz it's not short enough. If you want long hair, then GO FOR IT - the real thing. It's YOUR life, YOUR hair.
And yeah, depending on things like skull size, type of hair, rate of growth, it will take at least a year or two to get a decent length.
As to girlfriends: without meaning to sound callous, there are PLENTY of fish in the sea! There are loads of girls who go nuts for guys with long hair - maybe because those girls automatically sense that the guy has an artistic and romantic side and the courage to swim away from the boring crowd.
My current g/friend was attracted to me BECAUSE I already had long hair and already dressed like a 15-year-old wannabe rockstar! :)
She loved the look and, instead of changing me, she has changed herself to be more like me. I did not ask her to - I wouldn't dream of trying to change her - she just wanted to. She told me I brought out what was always lurking inside her but she needed the right boyfriend to help her confidence to express it. But that is entirely up to her; I love her for who she is.
Above all, be true to who YOU want to be. Life will follow.
Damon
----------------------------------------------------------
As to the homeless: most homeless dudes round my town have short hair. The huge majority of long-haired guys round here have long hair not because they can't AFFORD a haircut but because they don't WANT a haircut!
Long hair is in fashion here in Western Europe. Maybe your girlfriend needs to get with it! ;)

One year.
I am also starting out growing out my hair. it has been 5 months since i had a haircut. How long do you think it would take for my hair to grow down to mid back length? I am attaching a picture of how my hair currently looks after my haircut 5 months ago.
