Good Morning Ted (and all)
It is going to be a wonderful weekend along the South Jersey coast where I am working these days. Lots of activity as the SANDY rebuilding efforts are underway trying to get ready for the Memorial Day Weekend. Beautiful weather in the 60s - 70s with lots of Spring flowers and trees in full bloom.
Hope everyone has a safe, fun and restful weekend.
Walter
Hello Walter,
Thank you for helping them get things restored to order up there in New Jersey. A noble effort for sure! Very happy to hear there is nice weather with the flowers and trees looking good. And you be safe and have fun up there my friend!
Ted
Looking forward to it...still easing into the day...sitting in a warm bathrobe checking that the internets are still there. Later, going to take a nice city walk and explore a canyon wilderness[1] in the City I've never been to before. I might even take the big camera.
Tomorrow a long dayhike (25-30 miles) and a nice dinner to celebrate my 16th work anniversary.
And somewhere in there, continue with chores and errands.
'Pup trots off, tail wagging
Oh Trolleypup,
Sounds like you are going to have a fun time hiking and ejoying the sights! Hope fully there aren't too many chores and stuff mixed in! Congratulations on your 16th anniversary and I hope you enjoy the dinner! Please be safe and enjoy yourself my friend!

So how did you like Glen Canyon (assuming that is where you went)? It's an awesome place. No one expects to encounter a wild canyon with such high walls right in the middle of a densely populated city. I once saw a coyote there.
Where did you go? Before the recent illness I got, I used to hike that distance regularly around the city and surrounding area. I'd often take transit to one town and then end up in another town 25 miles or so away, where I'd take transit back.

Glen Park was possibly even more amazing than I expected from riding past on the bus for years! If the weather cooperated, would be a great place for hair pictures! By the time I got there it the wind was howling...I was late out of the house and hiking over the hills to get to it took a while.
Bart to Lafayette, up Lafayette Ridge to Briones Reservoir, around the north side, then down to San Pablo Reservoir, up to Inspiration Point in Tilden Park, by the steam train and then down to Orinda and Bart back to the City
Ended up being 27 miles with 4400 feet of elevation gain. Great open country...the views were actually better than around Mt. Diablo!
Yeah, it would be a great place for hair pictures - all those giant rocks and such.
The wind has been howling here every afternoon for the past few days. At some point it gets to the "too much hair stinging my eyes" level unless I stay down low. I was surprised that you hadn't hiked in Glen Canyon and then I realized it was a rather short hike for a long distance hiker like you! [grin] The city plans to open up the trail at the north end of the canyon at Portola so it connects to Twin Peaks, like it did twenty years ago before it got all grown up. When they do, then the canyon can be part of a longer hike.
I once hiked from Fruitvale station to Lafayette station, about 24 miles, and the change in the weather as I got further from the ocean was remarkable. I went over three very high ridgelines on the way, and the scenery was forever changing. Really cool. Other hikes from outlying transit stops I've done, all around 20 to 25 miles, have been from Half Moon Bay to Redwood City, Ft. Cronkhite to Mill Valley via Muir Woods (3600 ft. gain), and Walnut Creek to Pleasanton on the Iron Horse Trail (most of the elevation gain on this one was inside the Pleasanton BART station!) And I've done shorter stuff like taking the ferry to Tiburon or Sausalito and then walking home.
The muscle disease which hit me in 2006 is slowly sliding toward remission, and I've been trying to get both my speed and mileage up, as well as my tolerance of walking uphill. I'm now getting two and a half miles in every day at a pretty good clip. I figure when I can do five miles, then I can hike all day. That was my experience the previous times I've gotten in shape for long hikes.
I really have missed my long hikes. You never see half as much as you do when hiking. Only when you walk a route, do you really feel like you've been there!

Cool to see there are plans to connect that by trail...I saw the proposal to build the connector from the bottom of the Twin Peaks trail to Portola. Nice that I can do almost all the walk from home to Glen Canyon on trails or paths.
I was considering a hike east of Fruitvale, but both had long flat approaches (Lafayette and Walnut Creek)...and Walnut Creek was very long. Tempting to sneak backpack and overnight midway very discreetly.
Hah! Yes...Iron Horse is a real pancake! Taking the ferry to Larkspur and walking back is really nice too!
Hope your recovery continues...these recent hikes on more or less well groomed and maintained trails are nice...I know I can maintain the same speed, so I can plan the trips easily.
And when you are covering ground, without a specific destination other than the hike, you can just relax and enjoy everything you pass through.
Ted, you always have such nice positive posts. You really help make this board an amazing place to visit. Thank you.
So far I've had a great weekend. Sitting on a boat looking at the beautiful Tennessee hills. I hope yours is just as pleasant.
