Bill,
Great shot of you and Ken. Wonderful smiles! John's grandma's roses will be blooming on the deck here soon. Looking forward to seeing you and Larry soon.

It will be great to see you again!
When those roses bloom, be sure to pick some to go in your hair...
Ken has two homes, one in San Francisco and the other on the grounds of his workplace in Castro Valley, where he is the chef for a retirement home. It is in warm, sunny, and quiet Castro Valley that he has his garden, about forty miles from San Francisco.
In addition to spreading his perpetual cheer about the facility, Ken adorns it throughout with bouquets of roses. He plants the most aromatic of roses, and the perfume scent of them is everywhere. Shortly after arriving, Ken took us to the garden, and that is where Larry took the photo of Ken and me. Ken picked a rose blossom in a light hue of purple that matched my outfit for the day, and I put it in my hair. Everything that Ken touches comes up roses.
I've plucked flowers from the roadside to put in my hair while walking over to the Haight Ashbury Street Fair, and within an hour they have always wilted. That rose yesterday maintained its beauty all day long, and so did its scent. I enjoyed it all afternoon.
So be sure to put roses in your hair!

I'm sure both male and female hippies wore flowers in their hair, right?

Of course! And some of us still do!
Flowers are for special occasions, such as the Haight Ashbury Street fair, where you see me in the photo above. I'd say the same thing about all those beads. I don't know anyone who wears flowers and beads all the time.
Bill
I'm old enough to remember this song: (1967)
"If you're going to San Francisco
Be sure to wear some flowers in your hair
If you're going to San Francisco
You're gonna meet some gentle people there"
This song was by Scott McKenzie who died 8/21/12.
From what I've heard, the song was produced by a Los Angeles crowd, and did not originate from among much of the musical talent that had converged on San Francisco at that time.
Flowers were very much a symbol of the peace and hippie movements. Not only did hippies "wear flowers in their hair", they also painted them on their vans, and much to the consternation of National Guard troops who meticulously cleaned their rifles, hippies put flowers in their barrels.

At the ripe old age of 58 i fondly remember the Hippie era, after all i was one of those hippies in the 60s.
I have a lot of fond memories of that era.
Of course if you had suggested to this hippie of the 1960s that he would be honoring ROTC cadets in 2013 I would have said you were crazy. Yet that is what happened last week.
My how life takes some very strange turns.
Hey Bill,
So glad that you & Larry could make it over to my workplace and take the big tour!
Later on today I'll upload a couple of my most recent garden pics that were taken BEFORE I picked so many of the roses for indoor flower arrangements for Mother's Day....
Later, 'gator!
- Ken
PS - too bad I had my hair all tied tightly back in a bun yesterday, OMG, I almost look like a short-hair in this pic (horrors! - LOL)!!
Hello Ken,
Looking forward to more pics! Of course, I always prefer your beautiful hair flowing! We know you're not a shorthair! Thank goodness!
Ted
