Hi,
I am a long time reader, first time poster to this site. I have been growing my hair for 6 months, and intend to post pictures after about a year or so. I have tried to grow out my hair a few times, but have always cut it after 9-10 months. The thing is, for about the last 6 years or so, I have suffered really badly with Seborrhoeic dermatitis....the flakes, the itchy scalp, the whole nine yards. I have controlled it the best I can, and am now at the point where I am not prepared to keep cutting my hair just because of this annoying and uncomfortable ailment, so I guess my question is this - have any other Longhairs on this page suffered with dandruff / itchy scalp? And if so, what did you find to be the best way to manage it?
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
PS. Thank you to everyone who posts on this page, it really is encouraging to see other guys who are not prepared to be constrained by what society considers acceptable.
Thanks,
John
I have had problems with dandruff, I just Head and Shoulders
shampoo and conditioner. Often just using Head and shoulders
conditioner is enough to cotrol it. I only have the flakes, not the itchy scalp.
If you're using any kind of dandruff shampoo, you may be making it worse. Several ingredients in dandruff shampoos are common allergens, and cause as many problems as they solve. Try washing with nothing but water for two weeks to make sure that it's not an allergy.
Thanks for the information. I have been using Ketoconazole and Coal Tar shampoos, and I have found them very harsh in terms of drying the scalp. I intend to you use a dry scalp shampoo maybe once a week, and wash only with warm water every 2 days.
See you in 6 months for some update pics (by then I should have a shoulder length mane!)
Thanks,
John
Suffering from the same issue, and each time I try going to other products in orther to help my hair in other ways, the whity flakes come back.
What I have found to work best for me, is (surprise-surprise) head and shoulders, dry scalp edition. Both the shampoo and the conditioner are being used by me every other day, and I've had no flakes in a few months now.
The funny thing is that while my scalp is obviously very dry, my hair in itself is very oily, so if I wait for more than 2-3 days, it looks really greasy and bad. Either way, the top priority for me is not having any annoying flakes in my dark hair, as they REALLY show easily, and H&S seems to do the trick, as it has all my life, actually :)
