Today was the first really hot days of the year. It got up to 90 degrees and we should have about 4 days of 90 degrees weather making it the first heat wave of the year. This after a very cold
rainy memorial day weekend. The cold lasted the whole weekend but the rain stopped late Saturday/early Sunday morning.
I'm always amazed at guys who buzz their hair short in the hot weather. I've refused to to that, keeping my long hair long. And having long hair in the summer doesn't do anything to keep me warmer. So in alot of he hot summer weather i'll go around wearing cut off shorts, no shirt, and my long hair cascading down
my back. And even without tying the hair in a pony tail, braid,
pig tails, or bun i'm not really any hotter with it loose and
cascading down the back.
There are some days when it is very warm that i'll go and wet the
hair and leave it wet to keep cool. And keep wetting it as the day goes on. But there is one thing absolutely certain,
no matter how hot the summer is and how many scorching 90/100
degree days we have I will flatly refuse to cut my hair. it will
femain long until the day I die.
So to those who ask if i'm going to cut my hair for the summer
the answer is absolutely not. For the eniter summer it will
remain long, and will remain the natural color. (Black with lots
of grey sprinkled in, and by the time i die it will probbably be
all grey/all white/all silver. But it will remain long. No matter how many long hot summers I live through. it has stayed long for 49 years and i'm not about to change that now.
Personally I can't wait to have my hair down in the middle of our very hor Summers. When I start sweating and the hair kind of gets wet doesn't bother me a bit. I will be wearing my hair down and loose all the time. I am not growing it to hide it. As you can see, I am not worried about damaged ends and tangles. I shall become an expert at dealing with those issues.
The only time I tie my hair in a pony tail/braid/bun/pig tails is to prevent damage to the hair from wind/storms/or something it could get caught in.
The rest of the time I wear it down and loose. I have long hair and decided long ago not to hide it. So I wear it down
nad loose to fully enjoy it and to let the world know i've got
long hair and it will stay long whether they like it or not.
and yes I also did not grow my hair long to hide it.
Long or short hair, the temperature doesn't change. So that is not a good reason to cut your hair. Plus longhair protects your scalp/neck from the sun, with short hair there is a serious risk of sunburn.
Enjoy your hair this summer!
Absolutely. Besides when I get very hot in the summer it's my
chest that gets that gets the hotest. Since my hair is cascading
down my back that the hair has no effect on that.
For me there is no reason on earth to cut my hair. No reason at all.
I fully intend to. Every day. I've enjoyed having long hair
for 49 years now. Tomorrow and every day there after will not
be any different. After 49 years cutting my hair would be
like cutting off an arm or leg.
As i've said many times before after 49 years my long hair
(along with my cut off shorts) are my trade mark. So the long hair will remain long until the day I die.
BTW, in this hot weather does anyone on this board wear a kilt?
i've never worn one or tried wearing one but i'm very tempted to
try one. When I go to science fiction conventions there are
a number of long hair men wearing kilts and i'm tempted to finally break down and try one. (At some of our civil war
functions there is one long haired guy who has worn a kilt while the rest of us are in uniform.) So should i try one? (If I do try one it would be at the science fiction convention, not the
civil war functions.)
Instead of cutting of your hair in the summer, you cut of your pants :)
Kilts aren't really in my heritage, and living in SF I rarely wear shorts...I use them for hiking on good trails only. I'll admit to thinking about Utilikilts from time to time on hot days...but then the fog rolls in and I think about the cost for a day or few a year.
I live in the SW desert and we will be seeing triple digit temperatures for the next three months....a hat for shade and to protect the locks works well. Really short hair in this climate invites severe sunburn of the scalp.
LHIA,
I agree with you 100%. I wear my hair down most of the time as well and I don't have a problem with overheating and don't get sunburnt. Hair is a good insulater. Keeps you cool in the summer and warm in the winter. My long beard as well. At 60 years old my hair is still medium brown with just streaks of grey. A little more grey in the beard. My hair is very healthy and I take good care of it. I will never cut my hair either.
peace, jonalbear
Your hair looks great. Unlike you have a boatload of grey hair.
(It shows up much better in the photo from the National Cemetery.)
And it will remain long, grey (grey? white? silver?) until the day I die. It won't get anywhere a scissors if I can help it.
And the hair does keep me warm in the winter and cool in the summer.
And all the guys with the buzz cuts end up wearing a hat so their scalp doesn't get burned, so much for the idea of buzzing to keep yourself cooler. Hair keeps you cooler in the Summer, warmer in the Winter; it's Nature's own protection for the scalp.
Heat makes my hair dry and frizzy, so I wet it with Aloe Vera gel. It's cheap. has natural humectant properties (retains moisture) and it doesn't leave any buildup. It may have a green color, but it doesn't affect the color of your hair. It's sold in the skincare section of the store, as it's typically used to cool down and moisturize skin.
Hey Carol,
Thanks for the advice on the aloe vera gel. I have seen it sold in a clear gel form as well as a spray. Wonder how the spray would work in the hair?
peace,
John
Hello Carol,
I may try the Alo Vera gel. It seems like it would work to keep the hair soft and moisturized. Thanks for the suggestion! Hope you have a wonderful coming week my friend!

In my years as an adult I've grown my hair over the winter and cut my hair soon after the weather got to 80s. Not sure why I've done that, just been a habit I guess.
This is the first year I've not cut it, as I'm growing it out... maybe it's a placebo affect in my head but I do feel so much hotter all the time! Even so I'm dealing with it :)
Since 1964 i'vc never cut my hair in the summer. Although i've had some people ask if I was going to cut my hair for the summer.
The answer is absolutley not. The hair will stay 365 days a year,
year in and year out until the day I die.
And my hair keeps me warm in the winter and cool in the summer.
So instead of cutting my hair in the summer I cut my pants and
wear cut off shorts all summer long. (I also wear them in winte
too but that is a whole other topic.
Besides one of the advantages of having long hair is on real
hot days I can wet the hair and use that wet hair to cool off.
But in every summer it will remain long until the day I die.
and that is that. And after 49 years that isn't going to change.
I'll admit that exerting myself when the temps are high and my hair is down is asking for being a sticky tangled overheated mess...but then that is a lot of insulation! With my hair up, it is totally different, especially if I am wearing a cotton haircovering that wicks the moisture and salt outwards. Nothing like laboring in the heat...then getting to the end of the day, taking off the scrub and letting my hair down, untangled and letting the breezes cool me and my hair.
