I have been growing out my hair from a buzz for about a year and I got some serious split ends and need some suggestions on how to talk to these stylists so they comprehend what LONG means and I don't leave with a very short haircut which I definitely don't want!
what suggestions do you have?
thanks
if you are trying to look like any famous people, take a picture along with you and tell your stylist that you are trying to look like --- and show them the picture(s).
even if you are not trying to look like a famous person, if you see a style in a magazine or newspaper you like, take that picture with you.
I'd suggest not going to stylists at all. Get someone you trust, REALLY trust, and have them snip the splits off if it's bothering you that much. Once it gets long enough that you can see it, you can do it yourself. I just ignore split ends for the most part.
Lets be brutally honest here, there are no hair stylists.
If you have long hair that "stylist" has one goal in life...........to butcher that long hair you've patiently grown
for x number of years. I've had too many bad experiences over the years where these stylists do what they want to do not what
you the customer wants.
It would be the eqivalant of going into a car dealer and ssying you want a light grey Toyota Prius and the car salesmen says
you're going to get a yellow Smart Car.
Or you'd go into a computer store and tell them you want a
HP desktop and the salesman no you're getting a Mac.
You wouldn't tolerate that in car show room or the computer
stores but guys accept that with hair stylists. Well this is
one guy who refuses to accept it. Which is why after 49 years
my hair is still long.
In all the years i've found one stylist I could trust,
and here shop closed a few years back. All the rest
are butchers who do what they want with your hair not
what you the customer wants.
The solution? After 49 years with long hair i've yet to
find a good solution. Most of the stylists i've used over the
years really should call themselves butchers.

If "only" Split Ends are what you want cut, you can do all of this yourself and it is actually quite easy. We used to call it here on the board "Target and Destroy!"
Instead of trying to do them all the same day, do it over a period of time. Find the individual hairs one by one with the splits. Using a VERY sharp pair of sissors, cut just above the split. Problem solved! (You might get a friend to do the hairs in the back the same way.)
Presto.........you still have long hair and haven't been demolished by someone who won't listen.

In simple terms don't! Few so-called stylists understand long hair and think it needs serious cutting for no reason. they are also quite deaf to their clients and know best.
Follow Justin's advice or get a trusted friend to do it for you - ONE by ONE.
Unless you're shampooing with laundry detergent and blow drying at high heat, I can't imagine why you would have split ends after only a year of growth.
Hi Longhairlooksbest,
My short and simple answer is to simply avoid them. I have been growing my hair for about 9 months. Every time I think I need to visit a hair butchery (I mean salon), I let it keep growing. Next thing I know, my hair is looking just fine. You have to understand that any cutting, trimming, evening up etc. will extend the growing time to your goal length. Some people like to have their hair looking "perfect" at every step of the growing process. This is fine if your willing to pay for many haircuts. But I think it's unnecessary since our hair fixes itself.
I do find it kind of hard to believe you already have split ends. As another poster said, I would avoid blow drying on high heat. I would also never use a brush on wet hair. Also, when you dry your hair, only pat it dry. Never rub the towel on the wet hair. I myself also only shampoo my hair every 3-5 days and always rinse under cold water before exiting the shower. I have no split ends that I know of. In fact, a young girl at the emergency room told me I had "pretty Jesus hair"! It made my evening at the hospital much more bearable! Hope this helps!

Justin is right that you should be able to remove the split ends youself, especially being one year out on hair growth.
The hair stylist can do a wonderful job on hair shaping, split end control, but two to three years out, with hair shoulder to mid back. Such maintenance work keeps the hair at a long length. These are done every two months to keep long hair balanced and easy to brush. The stylist takes a hair roller, rolling wet hair up the back and neck, removing the split ends that stick out from the roller. Its a technique that takes experience to learn. Should take between one to two hours for a good job.
Just make sure the hair stylist is clear that you want a maintenance trim, not a hair cut. Keep the long length as it is.

My hair splits as soon as anyone even looks at it. Some of us are just like that. You can trim split ends individually yourself. It is very time consuming, but you can just trim a few at a time.
