Hi everyone,
One more crazy question. Please take a look at this pic I took just now. Please give me your opinion if you think my hair will eventually lay flatter on the sides. I am talking about where the hair covers the ears.
I realize my hair is not even long yet and doesn't really have much weight yet. I am also thinking it looks this way because I just washed it with shampoo and conditioner this morning. I value each and every response to this crazy question! Great weekend to everybody!
Ted
Hey Ted,
Not a problem. Your hair is just like mine.
Have you tried some Garnier Fructise Sleek and Shine after a shower after towel drying? Works for me, and tames it down, making it look less dry/damaged. Good luck!!
B
Hi Ben,
I thank you for your reply! However, I don't put any products in my hair anymore since I have been growing it. I don't even really like the way conditioner feels in my hair. Also, I barely touch my hair with the towel as this causes much frizz sometimes.
Hope you have a great weekend!
Ted
Hm. Ted, I just can't get why do you want hair to look flatter. Your hair looks so great as it is! Especially that so called "flufiness" around ears and at the sides. I'd be so glad if I could get the volume you have!
I'm not sure if your hair is going to change the way it lays with length, although I tend to think it actually will look a bit flatter when the hair becomes heavier. But Ted, I think you should learn to embrace yourself no matter how it lays. Your hair is just beautiful and it's going to look even better with time :)
Thanks and great weekend to you too, my friend!
Serge.
Hi Serge,
Thanks so much for your reply! I don't think my head could get any bigger from all of your compliments! But then again, that might make my hair even fluffier! I do understand what you say about the volume. We all want what we don't have. Believe me, I would be very happy with the nice neat hair type you have! It looks like you just can wash your hair and go.
I am slowly learning to embrace my crazy hair. It is taking a while. I always like my hair a few days after washing so it is less flyaway and unruly. But it seems by then it is starting to look and feel greasy. Oh well, I am just going to keep it growing and things will probably get better. I am planning to grow to waist and see how it looks. I am happy about how it is starting to sit in front of my shoulders now:)
Great weekend to you my friend! Stay well!
Ted
I would think it will gat flatter as the length and increases and the weight increases..
Hi LHIA,
Thanks a bunch for your reply! It looks like you and I might have similar hair types. If my hair looks anything like yours, I shall be very satisfied with it. I am just going to keep growing and see what happens. That is the fun in it, after all. I kind of wish my hair would turn all gray once and for all.
Great weekend to you my friend and stay well!
Ted
Thank you. I'm not sure how old you are but it took me 58 long years to acquire all this grey hair.
I keep saying I earned all that grey hair every time someone
told me to get a haircut.
Hi LHIA,
Well, I am going to be 47 in a few days. But I do have many gray/white hairs. I kind of wish it would all turn silver or gray. I think gray hair looks especially striking when long.
Ted
I was never in a hurry for my hair to turn grey. I've thourghy enjoyed the journey from 1964 to 2013. And i've done absolutely nothing to change the hair color. I've patiently watched over the years as my formerly black hair turned grey. I'll continue to wear it long and let nature do what nature will do as far as hair color. I fully expect that when i'm in my 90s i'll still have hair down to terminal length (be it waist length, knee length, or something in between.), it will be either grey, white, or silver, and i'll still be wearing my cut off shorts.
I would mention that when my hair was knee length in the 80s
I had no grey hairs. But no matter what they long hair will remain long and will remain it's natural color whatever that ends up being.
Yes definately. Your hair WILL get flatter. There are different degrees of flatter of course and your hair appears to be a bit on the wavy side. As it grows longer, these waves WILL lengthen and straighten. As always with long hair, your hair will be killer gorgeous by classic length or longer. :-)
Justin~
Hi Justin,
I thank you for your response! I am glad to hear the waves will get flatter with length! I guess if a person's hair is too curly the curls have a harder time flattening out. I am kind of glad that my hair isn't too curly because it would take even longer to show length. I love curly hair, but on other people because I simply am not patient enough! There is nothing more beautiful than waist length curly hair! (Septet are you paying attention?:))
Both of my parents have straight hair. So I am anxious to see what mine turns out to be. I do really appreciate your kind comments about my hair!:) Of course, if it in any way resembles your long hair I will definitely be satisfied! So, with that said, waist length here I come!
Ted
Well bud, just as everybody else says here, I am sure the curls and waves will get more subtle and less noticable with each inch you grow the hair.... but just to make you feel better, here's a picture of me I just took, simply to make YOU feel better!
MOP TIME!
Hi Raul,
Thanks a bunch for your reply! That is a wild and crazy photo of you! Your hair is definitely growing! I am sure you are correct about the waves getting less noticeable with more growth. Also, the poofy effect is worse soon after I wash. I am so glad to hear you took that pic especially for me!
Hope you're having a wonderful weekend my friend! Stay well!
Ted
That's a fantastically funny pic of a really bad hair day! Thanks for posting it, I needed a good chuckle this morning! :D

Glad I could be of service, Dale! ;)
Just wanted to show Ted that us mopheads with tons of air, volume and fluffiness must stick together, when there's all of you straight and fine haired dudes launting your manes around!
Mop power, baby!
You got that right Raul! Long live the Mopheads:)
I would mention that back in 1964 when I started growing my hair long the Beatles were described as mopheads. (I had forgotten about that until this was mentioend in posts.)
Wow!!! Does this bring back memories.
Mopheads
Quite the case of bed-head, Raul. I won't make any "There's Something About Mary". That would be tacky (literally).
That photo made my day hahaha really funny . I like the chest tattoo also (What is it?) I have one on my chest as well.
I found that my hair became more troublesome until about mid-back length and then got easier. Once it reaches a certain length, it stops flying around all over the place. It sits flat now, it doesn't tangle as much and there's less static.
Hi Antinous,
Thanks a bunch for your reply! You may be correct. I guess it could get worse before it gets better. I am getting more happy with my hair since it is getting longer. I think maybe I am just not giving my hair time to look better.
Is your hair really straight or wavy/curly? What length is your hair now?
Hope you're having a great weekend my friend! Please stay well!
Ted
If it were cut right, it would form very soft curls, but when it's long, it's pretty much dead straight. It's not quite waist-length.
Hi Antinous,
That's very interesting. You must have minimal curling since it can be dead straight at longer length. Sounds great! Please keep it growing!
Ted
I know exactly how you feel Ted. My hair used to be as yours as well. I used to not use any products as well.. but I understood that If I wanted to grow my hair long I had to use some products to keep the "poofyness" down.
I have been using leaving in conditioners and they really helped. I know you might not like them, but that is the only way to keep your hair "down". Give it a lot of moisture my friend, that way it will be nourished and will not "jump out".
That is actually the reason why your hair is "jumping out". Since is not nourished enough -although you use conditioner- the hair jumps out to get some moisture from the environment. So if you keep it nourished, it will stop doing that.
Give it a try please, a few weeks at least , and you will see incredible results and your hair will even look longer since it will be straighter.
Hi Dave,
Thanks so much for your reply! I hear what you're saying about the leave in conditioners. But I really don't like any products in my hair. I am even considering stopping the use of conditioner. I am finding that my scalp gets greasy enough without conditioner. So, it seems that when I use conditioner my scalp gets worse. I am going to grow my hair some more and then I might try your suggestions. I don't really think my hair is long enough to make a definite decision.
I hope you are having a wonderful weekend my friend! Please stay well!
Ted
I think cutting out using conditioners would be a big mistake. I have an oily scalp as well, but I find that shampooing less and conditioning more works better on my hair than the other way around. Up to a point, conditioners can work well to 'float off' excess oil without worrying about stripping the hair of needed moisture. Also consider using 'detangler' sprays, as they work to not only detangle but to also add moisture and control 'fly-away' hair.

Hi Dale,
Thanks a bunch for your reply! I may have to try your routine as well as others mentioned here. I just don't really like any leave-in or products in my hair. I am just going to have to figure out what works best for my hair and scalp. I may even stretch my washes longer. Of course, I don't even consider my hair long yet. So things may change as I get my hair even longer. Do you have a current pic of your length on your Facebook page? Can I add you as a friend on Facebook? It would be much appreciated.
Hope you're having a wonderful weekend my friend! Be well!
Ted
Hi Ted,
Your hair does look good, and the "fluff factor" that you mention emphasizes the thickness. I am sure that as you hair lengthens, and gains more weight, it will indeed lie flatter.
One thing that I should mention is that my own hair is not as straight as it appears in my avatar photo. I "cheated" a bit when I took that photo, and it was on a dry day, and shortly after washing and conditioning, when it was at its straightest.(I also use leave in conditioner, since my hair is prone to be dry, and the leave in helps it to lie flatter) On humid days, my hair can actually be quite wavy, even curly, and looks thicker as well, but the length does "shrink up " somewhat due to the waves and curls.
Good luck with your future growing!
David
Hi David,
Thanks so much for your reply! I do appreciate your nice comments about my hair! I didn't realize your hair wasn't that straight. I do know what you mean about the hair being somewhat straighter after a wash. Mine always seems to be straighter right after I wash it. However I am happy to have volume and waviness so my hair has character.
Your hair is looking fabulous and I am inspired by it. I will just keep growing and let Mother Nature tell me what I should have. After all, Mother knows best! I hope you are having a great weekend my friend! Stay well!
Ted
As I said before, our hair is very similar.
Give it another year and the top will be straight with waves only at the end.
Your other conclusion is also true, the day after washing I always had a wild lions mane around my head when it was shorter. After a few days the grease weights it down.
Hi Vincent,
Thanks a bunch for your reply! I am sure you are correct about the weight making my hair flatter. After another year I should have at least mid-back length. More than likely it will look better than I expect. But whatever it does I will be happy with it! It is nice to know that I'm not the only one with the fluffy hair after a wash.
I hope your weekend is going nice my friend! Please stay well!
Ted
The real question is: Why would you want it to? You look like Fabio! A brunette, bespectacled Fabio, but still...
Hi Septet,
Aw, I can always count on you to be very flattering with your comments! Fabio, huh! I had to go google him to see for myself! He has better hair than I do and possibly more handsome. But that's okay. I am really content with how my hair is growing so far. Sometimes I think I am over reacting since I don't know what to expect. I will probably be surprised by how my hair looks when it's longer. Just have to keep going to find out!
I hope you are having a great weekend my friend! Please stay well and thanks for the nice comments:]
Ted
Ted,
1) I think your hair will lay flatter as it gets more weight to it.
2) I totally agree with the comments about you just enjoying your hair and embracing it!
It's looking great. Mine lays flat on the sides but the ends flip out. I think that will get better with length.
Enjoy the weekend
Tony
Hi Tony,
I thank you for your reply! I do agree with you that my hair will lay flatter. The more I look at my hair and think about it, it really isn't even that long yet! It hasn't even totally filled in across the back yet. I think it is going to look fine at mid-back length. I am going to try to grow to waist length if my hair genes can do it. Thanks a bunch for your nice comments! I appreciate them! I shall start to embrace my hair and keep growing!
Your hair is definitely looking great! I look forward to your future updates. Hope you are having a nice weekend my friend! Please stay well!
Ted
I hear you Ted. My hair does the same thing after I wash it. It is quite annoying but my wife says that's the volume and thickness coming out! I guess we'll just have to wait and see how long it will take to "flatten".
Hi Tommy,
Yes, my wife also tells me not to worry about it! I am always asking her if she thinks it will look better when it gets longer. She just keeps telling me to give it a chance.
I have to tell you that I am liking my hair more the longer it gets. I will be happy with whatever it looks like. I just don't want any issues with tangling. That seems to be a big problem with long hair.
Ted
Yep. I am as well. I'm pretty sure when I first tried growing my hair out 10 years ago that is was a little bit longer than it is now, however I didn't know how to take care of it. I literally wore a hat every day too, so I don't remember it being this long. That combined with the fact it was 10 years ago doesn't help my memory :)
Ted, with my own long hair experience, applying a small amount of olive oil (or any other type of beneficial oil, like: Kukui nut, pure Almond oil, or Jojoba are also good oils for the hair), whether to damp or dry hair, you'll find that this procedure really helps keep the lower half of your mane better moisturized, less frizzy, and will lessen split ends -- as well as weigh your hair down just enough to help solve this problem, too!
I swear by it, in fact now that I've been doing this ritual for many years now, I end up missing it every time I'm lazy about NOT applying the olive oil. Here's my favorite way to use the oil:
1) on my shampooing days (which is usually about twice a week), after conditioning and thoroughly rinsing my hair with cool clear water, I wrap a towel around my head to absorb most of the moisture while I get dressed for the day;
2) combing through the freshly cleaned and conditioned hair, during the air-drying process, I pour a very small amount of olive oil into my hand (approximately the size drop of a small coin's worth, like an American dime, or nickel as it gets longer), rub my hands together and then finger-comb through the lower half of my mane;
3) make sure both the left and right sides of your hair have as even a distribution as possible, as well as what you can reach in back;
4) to avoid a "greasy" look in front and on top, I never apply the olive oil onto my scalp, as well as am careful not to get the oil too far up the hair shaft into the bangs area (AKA "fringe")...
As your hair fully air-dries, you'll be amazed at how well the olive oil is absorbed into the hair, leaving it incredibly soft and manageable, and also weighing it down enough to give it maximum body without the poofiness.
Give it a try, and hope you enjoy the results as much as I have enjoyed this over the years on my own hair!

Oils are the best way to condition dry hair. The reason why hair is fluffly is because it has no enough oils. Hair that is well moisturized with oils will weigh down and be straighter.
I LOVE trying different oils. I began using olive oil. Right now I bought a L'oreal oil that smells great (it's a mix of different flowers oils - not sure if they sell it in the United States but I bet you have a bunch of other options).
So Ted, I know I told you this a hundred times hahaha and I dont want to sound like an intense guy, but really , give it a try. Oils will transform your hair immediately.
Its a matter of knowing how to work with oils, how to handle it until and practise until you feel comfortable with it.
Hi Ken,
I apologize for the late reply! Thanks for the excellent information! I will have to try these tips. I just don't like the "wet" feeling the oils give the hair. I need to learn proper technique I guess. Of course, my hair is not even that long yet.
Your hair is looking fantastic so I definitely need to listen to you! Thanks again for the great tips! Have a wonderful week my friend and stay well!
Ted
