Going away (out of the country) for a couple weeks and didn't want to bother with trying to bring shampoo on the plane - was wondering if anyone thought shampooing with bar soap for a couple of weeks would do any damage to my hair?
Dave
Don't use bar soap on your hair. It will damage it horribly. People with short hair can get away with it, but your ends will be permanently dried out and nasty.
Yikes, didn't think it would be a problem at all. I guess I'll go try and find some those stupid tiny bottles.
Hi Dave,
Scented or unscented, most bart soaps leave a gummy-feeling film on your hair; so I'd avoid those (including Dove soap) at all costs).
Years ago I went on a 5-week back-packing trip in a remote wilderness area of Wyoming (it was a course put on by National Outdoor Leadership School). Even though my hair was only long-ISH at the time, I was glad to have found a Ph-balanced bar soap made by the "Redken" company -- very expensive; but it truly felt like a quality shampoo in a bar soap form. As far as I know Redken still exists, although I don't currently know where it is sold (it used to be sold in hair salons)...
For a camping & backpacking trip, light weight and compact mean all the difference in the world; so liquid-type shampoos & conditioners would not have been a wise option for that type of trip, as I imagine would be similar in your situation.
Hope my comments have helped!

Thanks for the advice. By the way, how was Wyoming? I've always wanted to go there.
Dave
I haven't been back to Wyoming in a long time (I took that National Outdoor Leadership School course there way back in 1975), 1981 being the last year I remember driving through it (but in a different part of the state).
It's a drop-dead GORGEOUS state, though, in general -- very wild & untamed-looking (other than the few small cities they have there).
The Bridger Wilderness is roughly in the center of the state, kind of like an "island" of mountains all by themselves, where the headwaters of the green River originate. Back when I was a kid, they used to film Marlboro cigarette commercials there, with a famous rugged mountain called "Flattop Mountain" in the background, a tough-looking handsome cowboy riding horseback along the crystal-clear waters of the Green River, smoking his damn cigarette (LOL).... The scenery in real-life looks EXACTLY like those rugged outdoor commercials, though -- and in other parts of Wyoming (like the Grand Tetons & Yellowstone National Park, for example), the scenery is just as breath-takingly beautiful as any photos you'll see of it. Well worth the visit, I definitely highly recommend seeing it sometime!
Off to work now (sigh - LOL)....

When i'm traveling since you can't take liquids on the plane
I leave all the shampoo and conditioner at home. Once I get to
the destination I go into a drug store and buy some shampoo
and conditioner. I hate the shampoo and conditioner they have
in hotels. For the few days i'm away from home the shampoo probably doesn't matter but the conditioner is something that i have to have. I believe the bar soap will damage your hair.
No, why would you do that?
Of course you can take shampoo with you on the plane.
You CAN'T take it on the carry-on bag, but you CAN put it on the baggage that you check in.
Well, not checking any bags, and didn't want to have liquid soapy stuff in my carry-on.
