After much thought I finally did it..........I removed about four inches of hair to even up the ends which were looking pretty bad. I hated to do it but then I also hated the way the
ends were looking. So now my hair is back to nipple length.
The hair is still long but now it will look a bit better and
not as ratty at the ends. Oh and it is still just as grey.
Considering how bad the ends were and how careful i've been i'm
starting to wonder if my terminal length is now around nipple length.
Hi LHIA,
Nice to hear you got your ends looking nice. Sometimes when you let them grow the ends seem to get uneven or thin looking. Four inches isn't too bad. At least your hair looks better to you and it will grow back. I sure hope you're not at terminal length already. Please keep it growing!
Ted
Thank you.
Actually I measured the hair after i chopped it off and it was
actually seven inches. I really didn't want to remove that much
but after looking at the hair closely there was really no choice.
There was too much damage.
Maybe now that i'm 58 years old the hair is more susceptable to
damage? And maybe at 58 my terminal length is now shorter?
If that is the case then one of the blessings is that my family has no MPB issues. So my hair will hopefully stay long until the day I die.
Wise decision. Now the ends will be thicker and more blunt so that you can continue on growing without a whole lot of extra snags and tangles as well as having the hair look nice and full from top to bottom.

Thank you. I've been extremely careful the over the last year and a half to avoid any damage to the ends. About 15 months ago
I had to trim off about eight inches of hair to claen up the
ends that looked bad. Despite being extremely careful with my
hair the ends still sustained some damage. I've been very carefulo to tie my hair up in a pony tail/braid/pig tails/bun
on occasions where any damage could occur. Expecially on windy/stormy days. i've also been very careful to use conditioner/finger comb the hair/and avoid tangles.
Maybe now that i'm 58 yeas old my hair is more suseptable to
damage and is reaching terminal length at about four inches below my nipples?
Yes, most likely it is age and/or genetics I would think. Still and all and all, you win. So many guys at this age or even older (nearly 61 while I still had long hair almosy to butt length) hardly have any or no hair at all. You have no doubt tried spray in conditioner to the ends? Even if so, you still have a great head of hair to show for it.
Justin~
Thank you.
I haven't tried any anything on the ends except for the regular
conditioner I use when I shower. I'm thinking I should try some
coconut oil, or one of the other oils mentioned on this site.
They have spray in conditioner?
Yes they do and it really helps! :-) (At least it did for myself until illness did my hair in.) My own trims were only about every 2 years which I did myself, and I ended-up taking off about 1 full inch at that time. Split ends to myself were really an unknown. Guess some people never seem to get these, some get a number of them and others are always loaded with splits. (Probably Genetics again I rather think.)
I pretty much stuck with the Aussie line from the beginning of when it first came out and it worked well in my case. In the earlier days of this MLHH, The Aussie line was the first choice way to go for just about everyone. In my washing routine (which ended-up once a week for years), after Shampoo, I would put in a ton of Conditioner and let it stay for 5-10 minutes before rinsing out, but not 100% entirely out. Later on in the week if the ends were feeling way too dry I would just spray leave-in Conditioner on them and presto, they felt nice and healthy.
Guess it wouldn't hurt to give it a try if you decide. That would be great if it ended up helping you to not have to cut off so much. Alas, everyone is different so trying to find the right solution is all hit and miss as we go along.
Justin~
ps: The Aussie "Hair Insurance" Leave in Conditioner was what I used. Directions: "Spray into clean, damp hair. Then do that thing you do to your hair but don't rinse."
Thank you for the advice. I'll give it a try.
Yes I did my first serious trim in 5 years 5 months ago in mid February and cut off the thin ratty ends too cutting back 4-6 inches. I was a lot happier afterwards how neat my hair looked with thicker well defined ends. I am now around 24 inches in length and still have the goal of waist length but nevertheless was a lot happier to have it all one length and no longer in layers.
