I have about 4-5 inches on hair all around. The front goes to my eyes and the back is starting to touch my shoulders. I really don't want to cut my hair but I also don't want to be looked at as a hoodlum. I plan on dressing very professional and combing my hair away from my face.
Does anyone have any advise for a situation like this?
I would suggest you go to a reputable salon and get a trim, meaning not more than what it takes to make you look more professional.
I would suggest telling the stylist you want a professional sleek look ,but to keep the length. also, ask for suggestions on hair products to use as well.
Definitely avoid going to a barber shop at all costs because they'll take it all off in those places!
to a Barber, looking "presentable" means taking out the clippers and buzzing the back and sides and leaving just enough to comb on top.
good luck!
Not knowing what type of hair texture you have i would highly suggest getting a flat iron and unless you plan on using one on a regular basis don't spend a lot of money.
also get some heat protectant to put on your hair as well
the reason for this is you want to be able to tie it back in a ponytail that way the focus IS NOT on your long hair.
Gel would most likely be your best bet seeing as your hair isn't long enough to tie back. I wouldn't cut it. Cutting isn't likely to help.
Unfortunetly you don't say in what context you have to go to
court.
If it is for jury duty, or as a witness I would not cut it,
just make sure it looks neat.
On the other hand if you're accused in a serious crime
you may want to seriously consider getting a
conservative haircut.
I'm not a lawyer nor do I play one on TV but if you're the accused you should absolutely listen to the advice of your
lawyer.
Why are you gracing the Court with your presence?
Hi Zachary - Do you have a pic?
sorry to say = but if you are going to court for criminal charges - your hair length, condition & its appearance are the least of your worries ... learn, grow, evolve, become a better person for this besieged 'blue-marble' - it ALL starts with you ... contribute to its betterment - believe me = there is enuff trying to destroy it - brick by brick ... add to its wholeness = not it's destruction ...
I am a law student and believe me, the judge will not give a **** about your hair once it's time to judge you.
I have to disagree with that. There are judges that will
be very prejudiced against long hair. So will some jurors.
Especially if the jusge is in Texas, another soutehrn state,
and handled proetstors in the 1960s. I know too mamy
that had long hair, were protesting the war and were
servely disliked by judges. All you needed was long hair
and the judge would very much agaisnt you.
I know too many guys from the 1960s who got a raw deal from
judges, police, etc.
If a Judge decides to send someone to jail , his decision has to be based on the law, not on the way the person looks.
So, even if the judge does not like long hair on the person he is judging, unfortunately he has to respect what the law says.
Let me guess, you're not old enough to have lived through the 1960s
are you?
Thrre were judges/police/etc. who hated men with long hair.
I had lots of freinds who had not so pleasant encounters with
said pollice and judges. They had little tolerance for long
haired men.
I have never had a unpleasant encounter with any cops. I think they're too busy busting lawbreakers and unless you have a reason to fear them(such as breaking the law)I see no reason to be paranoid about it.
the days of "long hair" bashing are a thing of the past.
it's 2013, not 1968.
I am going to respectfully disagree. While longhairs don't get abused to the extent that they did in the past (at least in most places) there is still a lot of prejudice against us from certain types of people. In the 60's and 70's longhairs, in some places, were victims of violence. In 2013 this probably only happens in certain countries. But I can assure you, even with physical altercations mostly out of the pictures, there are plenty of people who have a problem with longhair.
Hi Zachary,
The longer I grow my hair the more I refuse to cut it for anybody or anything. I do thank you for posting this because it just reminded me of the people who don't understand men with long hair. I do suggest you keep your hair long regardless of which side of the court you are on. As you might be able to tell, I have very little tolerance for intolerance.
Ted
I have to disagree. As much as I detest the idea of cutting
his hair for any reason I also recognize that if being tried
for something cutting your hair could lead the judge to be
lenient where as if you don't cut your hair the judge may be
much less lenient. Judges are human and your sppearance could
dictate whether the judge/jury believe you.
It's nice to say the judge should follow the law the judge
sometimes has lattitutde in sentencing, and how you appear in
court could mean the difference between a light sentence, a suspended sentence and a harsh sentence.
The judge also has the abllity to anyone in the court in contempt. And i've heard of cases where judges have held
those in his court in contempt for not following a strict
dress code.
Yes judges can and do have bad days and they
can be a real *astard about these things.
I had alot of friends in high school and college who had
long hari and found out the hard way how much long men were hated
in the 60s and 70.
And some of those judges/police are still around.
Hi LHIA,
Those are great points you make. However, I don't believe we ever found out why he is going to court. One thing I can say, if it is for a crime committed, then he has to deal with it. We know how to stay out of court for that. Stay out of trouble.
I am so happy I don't have to cut my hair for anyone or anything.
Ted
.........unless you're falsely accused.
Yes-excellent point.
Gel helps obscure the length, when everything is slicked back. For the back, if you're keeping the back trimmed, then there's nothing to do, but if it's not, it should be long enough to make a respectable rat tail.
Also, if you don't have highlights/lowlights in your hair, if your suit is approximately the same color as your hair, from a distance nobody could even tell how long your hair is.
If you haven't already, make sure that your clothes are well fitted. There's really nothing that kills a suit/shirt than droopy shoulders, or it being too long or too short.
Speak clearly, confidently, and articulate a diction that resembles formal English as much as possible, and good luck on your court appearance. I wish you the best
-Matt
Exactly what is the situation? If you're merely going to court as a witness to something or as someone who is there for some other reason, no one would care. If you're actually being tried for something where things are hanging on every word you speak, yeah, I would neaten up as much as I could, because the judge is going to be looking at everything--and if he's prejudiced against stuff like hair, you might have an issue. But, then again, if it's a serious court case and it's against you, your hair is the least of your worries. If not, no sweat.
Thank you for the replys. I might just get a small trim.
