First off, let me tell you something about myself. I think everyone of us has (a) reason(s) of why we are/want to be Longhairs and now I'm going to tell you mine and when I realized I'm a Longhair.
When I was about 7 or 8 years old, my father bought some games for me and my brother and one of them was Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. The protagonist in this game had, as you can see in the pictures, ching length hair. To me, it was something new, because I haven't seen any long haired boys/men in my life before, because where I live, they are very rare, but it appealed to me nonetheless.
2 years later my brother got himself the second Prince of Persia and some time later the third and I still thought the Prince had magnificent hair, which encouraged me even more to grow it out. It wasn't until I was 13, though, when I first tried to grow it out. It failed though, because I just couldn't make it past the awkward stage and I eventually cut it when I was 14. One year later, I didn't even intend to grow it out again, but when I didn't cut it for months and saw that it became longer, I thought that it is worth another try.
It was quite an experience to get past the awkward stage. All the comments from other people, all the days I just wanted to quit and never try again....but I was sueccessful!
Over the years I added more reasons of why I wanted to be a Longhair:
-I'm not happy looking like everyone else (That doesn't mean I only have long hair because I try to be different.)
-Short hair, in my opinion, is not very interesting. Actually, quite boring if you ask me.
-I have always been different from the others (in my behavior), so why not with my appearance?
-I'm really curious about how my hair looks like when I reach my goal.
-One day I'm going to cosplay a fictional character I really like and I won't have to wear a wig, like some people do.
-Headbanging with long hair is just amazing.
-I want to encourage other guys who desire to be Longhairs to grow their hair out.
and some more, but here are some reasons of why I would never grow my hair out:
-For fashion (Honestly, I don't care if long hair suddenly becomes in. As soon as it stops being in, a lot of guys will cut their hair, except for us).
-For girls/women (I don't care what guys say about my hair and I even care less about what girls/women say about it.)
I should probably get to the point of the thread already.
So, as you can see in the picture of the silver haired character, his hair in the front reaches somewhat past his chest, while his hair on the back of his head is even past his ass. Now I want to do it just like him, but a little bit shorter. Front: To the chest. Back: Almost to my hips. I know, using a fictional character isn't that good of an idea, since their hair is always perfect and you never know how long your terminal length is, but since I'm young I think the length wouldn't be a problem. My question is, should I grow all of my hair to my hips and then cut the hair in the front to my chest or should I keep the front at chest length and let the rest grow? What do you guys think?
Hey Michail!
I just HAD to answer to this thread, seeing as not only have I grown up with the original Price of Persia games back in the late 80's and early 90's, but I have also been a HUGE fan of the newer games, and especially the warrior within, which to this day and age, is still one of my favorite games of all times!
So much so, that the geek in me took over, and I got THIS on my inner arm a few years back... recognize the artwork? ;)
As for your question, I seem to believe you are asking about Sepiroth's hair, which is indeed rather manga'ish and rather hard to pull off in real life. Either way, I would wait until your hair has gotten to the desired length before starting to eventually cut it in the right form or dye it silver.
You don't know how glad I am there are other PoP fans here. I was not expecting anyone here to know the games, much less to be a huge fan of it. Granted, you are much more of a fan than I am, seeing as not only have you played the games before I was born, but you also got yourself a PoP tatoo.
I agree with you on the subject of Warrior Within. Everything about it was just amazing. The weapons, the story, the Dahaka, the music (this one especially), the two different endings, the sand wraith (also this one), the enemies, the combat system...Absolutely orgasmic.
And your tatoo kicks ass! You chose the best artwork of all the games.
I've thought about it and I think I made my decision! I will grow it all to my hips and if I still didn't change my mind at that point, I will cut it into the desired form. As for the dying it silver part: Never! I have grown to love and appreciate my own hair color and honestly, I don't see the appeal of dying it. An old school mate of mine told me once I should dye it black, because that's really Metal...Wut?
Great pics and your reasons are quite valid and I agree with you
that short hair(especially clipper cuts) are quite boring!
Hey Jake!
Thanks a lot. Well, I've never had my hair that short as a clipper cut and I'm kind of glad I never did. It looks so bland and when every second other guy has the same haircut as you, I don't think you will ever stick out of the mass. Though, some people like being rather unobtrusive. They like being part of the mass and that's their choice.
As for your question how women can like the very short hair or buzzcut look: It seems as though, that women love to rub a bald man's head, just as they like to brush or play with a guy's long hair.
I honestly don't give a xxx whether women have short or long hair and I don't have any preferences, because I expect them to feel the same towards my appearance. Why would they even care how I look?
Also, I feel sorry for the guy who got skin cancer. All the more reason for me to wear long hair, though.
I personally find it ridiculous how many times men with flattop's or buzzcuts have to visit a barber to keep it that way. It's their money and their hair and that's not my business, but said people tend to forgot that other people's hair is not their concern and they have nothing better to do than try to belittle them, because they want to feel superior, when really, they are just pathetic and insecure
Hey Michail,
Your post is one (1) of those posts which I felt compelled to reply to.
I presume that the pic of the real guy is a pic of yourself. Your hair looks awesome, bro. I don't think that your reasons for wanting long hair are unrealistic or childish at all. As I read your reasons for wanting to be a long hair I came to the conclusion that this dude is a born longhair. When you saw the character in the Prince of Persia game with long hair it simply trigered your recognition of what is beautiful. The will naturally desires beauty. You said that you would not cut your hair because having long hair suddenly fell out of fashion. I feel similarly. this is characteristic of being a born longhair.
I suggest that you not cut your hair until it reaches terminal length; let it al grow as long as it grows. Once you reach terminal length then you can decide if you want to cut any part of it.
Your longhaired bro,
Raymond
Hey Raymond!
I'm surprised you felt the need to reply to my post.
Yeah, that's me. Thank you very much, Raymond. It is true. A Longhair knows that. He feels it and even if he has never had long hair all his life, due being pressured to cut the hair or something like that, even after 40 years of being short haired, he still wishes to have long hair, which is why some guys start very late in life to follow their dream.
Terminal Length is a bit too much for me. I will say I will let it grow to my hips or even to my ass and then decide if I still want to do the Sephiroth.
Ah yes, Sephiroth, the goal all longhairs dream of achieving...
Looking at your picture, I must say that if anyone has the potential to grow the Sephiroth, it would be you. I say let it all grow and see where that takes you. Good job on using a somewhat realistic hairstyle as a base. I'd hate to have to be the one to tell you that you can't look like Meister Seymour, no matter how much hair gel you use.
I bet, even a lot of short haired guys wish they had hair like him. LOL
You don't how happy I'm now knowing that I might be able to get a Sephiroth haircut. I made my mind up. I will do exactly that. Grow it to hip or ass length and I will probably not have changed my mind by then, so.....Sephiroth haircut, here I come!
Well, I try to be as realistic as possible, because some things are just not achievable, like Seymour's hairstyle. Although, if you take away the parts that look like horns and you have the right hair type, you could actually do that in real life.
On a side note: I was never really interested in impossible long hairstyles. For example, Son Goku's hair in Super Saiyan 3 form.
One thing occurred to me in cosplay is another good reason for using a wig rather than your natural hair is what happens if
you have five cosplay cons you want to attend but want to go
as five different characters with five very different hair
styles?
After you spend the better part of two years making a cosplay
costume and rehearsing lines/blocking/making the props etc. you
may end wanting to switch between costumes at other cons. Your natural hair may make that more difficult than it would be with a
wig.
Definition of Cosplay:
"cosplay
Literally "Costume Play." Dressing up and pretending to be a fictional character (usually a sci-fi, comic book, or anime character).
There are anime cosplay conventions around the world."
To show you how involved these costumes can get (even outside
of Cosplay) there is one guy who built a full scale
R2Ds robot that he would bring to conventions. That probably took him 3-5 years to build.
Hi Michail,
I don't think what you say is either childish or unrealistic. We all have to have something to inspire us to grow our hair. The only thing is sometimes we may not have the proper hair type as the person who inspires us. i know that is true for me. I kind of like the style you are thinking about. To get the length shorter at the chest and longer in the back you would get your hair long layered. The layers would get longer as they got to the back.
I would let all of your hair grow until it is the length you want in the back. Then I would have a skilled stylist layer the hair to get the effect you want. They will most likely blend the layers so it doesn't look so mullety. You do seem to have the correct hair type to achieve this. Your hair looks awesome and I look forward to your future updates!
Have a great rest of the weekend and keep it growing please!
Ted
also, these guys that have less than a 1/4" inch of hair on their heads are being unrealistic. I knew a guy who was into the head shaving thing back into the 1990s and worked out in the heat. he ended up getting skin cancer as a result!
hair is there for a reason and this 'buzzed' trend is LONG overdue for dying out. it should have died out by 2001(at the latest) as far as I'm concerned!
Thank God for Men like Brad Pitt and Johnny Depp!
Hi Jake,
That really sucks about the guy getting skin cancer! Yes I believe hair is there for a reason. Let the buzzheads keep wasting their money on haircuts. We longhairs save money and look great at the same time.
And yes, thank God for Johnny Depp and Brad Pitt! They look badass with long hair!
Ted
the buzz heads or "buzzards" as someone else refers to them(which shall remain unnamed) spend more money on haircuts at the barber shop since they go more frequently than I visit a hair salon and even though I probably might pay more per visit I
pay for fewer visits than the buzzheads do.
one thing to consider is that the shorter the hair the more frequently it needs to be trimmed.
to a buzzhead, like the ones getting "high 'n' tight" flat tops and fades they go to the barber practically every week and that definitely add$$ up!
these guys with their flat tops have to get it trimmed so frequently to keep it looking flat on top and as horrendous as it looks to me they probably spend about 100x more on haircuts than I do on a visit to the salon.
Hey Ted!
You are probably right. It just seemed kind of unrealistic because......it's fictional and in fiction you can create something that wouldn't be possible in real life. It is true that you can not always achieve the hairstyle someone else has, because of your hair type, though in some cases you can do it. Let's say someone with curly hair had the same hair length as the hairstyle that inspired him, but in order to fully achieve the hairstyle
he would have to have straight hair. There are the right tools to help him. Someone else wouldn't have to use these tools, because he his straight hair, but that's why they exist! To help others achieve the hairstyle they want to. Or he could go for another hairstyle that fits his hair type. The choice is entirely up to the person. My point is, that just because you don't have the right hair type, it doesn't that it's impossible for you to achieve the hairstyle you always wanted to.
May I know who inspired you? Glad you like and understand it. It's just that I don't really know any skilled stylist here, but I'm sure, I'm going to find one. I've got lots of time for my hair to reach that length, anyway. Well, I would hate if it had a mullety. Yeah, it seems so, although Sephiroth's hair is dead straight and mine is a bit wavy.
Thanks, I will not miss posting updates every 6 months form now on! I'm excited to see when your hair will be all at one length and down to the waist.
Hi Michail,
I was inspired by many people to grow my hair. Mainly the rock bands from the 80's. You just have to look around and talk to people who have hair that you like. They will be able to tell you of a good stylist. I would not worry about the fact your hair is wavy. It doesn't look all that wavy to me though. You have to grow it out to find out for sure how wavy it will be at that length you want. I will definitely look forward to your updates!
I appreciate your excitement about my hair! One of these days I will get there!
Ted
Let me start off by saying I have an even more childesh reason for growing my hair. One day I was watching the Dd Sullivan
show and these four guys from Liverpool came and sang with their
long mop top hair. I knew right then and there I had to grow my hair long. That was in 1964, now in 2013 i'm stil just as childish and still have my hair long. And it will remain long
until the day I die.
Same here. Over the 49 years i've had long hair I flatly refused be like most of the other men on this planet who
had short boring hair cuts..
Absolutely.
Same here. I always hve violated the dress code big time
and wore my hair and the clothes I wanted to not what
some arbitrary dress code said i had to wear..
For cosplay you should check out science fiction conventions.
Cosplay is recent years is very popular.
Look around, there are tons of science fiction conventions.
Just stick the fan run conventions
I don't do headbanging. I've never understood what is enjoyable
aboit getting a migraine. But i've listend to hard rock music s
since the 1960s.
I keep saying if you want to grow your hair long you should do it today while you're still above ground. This has been driven
home to me big time in the last few months with a number of friends dying. And each one of them came as a huge shock.
I've had long hair for 49 yeasr whehter it was fashionable or not. I wanted it long so it stayed long.
That is entirely up to you. You are the final decider of how
long your hair should be. I'd suggest growing it to
terminal length and then strictly follow the two week rule
before cutting anything. You may want it the length you descibe above but when you raech teerminal length you may change your
mind decide to stay with it at that length.
I would also mention that by the time your hair gets that
long the cosplay characters you are interested in may be
much different. Also before you even think of trimming your
hair i'd suggest hooking up with one or more of your local
costuming groups. You may find it more to your liking to have your hair at terminal length and still pursue your cosplay
characters. There many costumers out there who can be
very helpful. Maybe volunteer to work on the masquerade and learn about costuming from the many entrants to costume call
(masquerade.) You'll find people who spend years perfecting their costume, their lines, their blocking, etc. And alot of them are extremely talented in creating their costumes,
props, and the story line they have going with it.
I would mention too that one of the deaths I heard about this
week was one guy who started working on costume calls at
science fiction conventions in 1952.
well, that is something you and I can agree on 100% and it applies to both genders.
imagine if all women got Emma Watson type "pixie" haircuts!
not sure about you guys, but as a guy with longer hair I prefer some length on the ladies.
What I never understood is how can any woman tolerate Men with hardly any hair or no hair?
As far as me I prefer to leave the choice up to the women.
I prefer long hair on me but also feel that women should be
able to wear their hair the way want.
It's their choice.
So i'll continue to be childish and keep my long hair long.
I don't find this to be a childish reason at all, because the guys from Liverpool did what I want to do by having long hair. Inspiring others to grow their hair out.
And it was probably the best decision of your life. Diversity is amazing, isn't it? To bad that the unenlightened masses are too blind to see that.
Everyone has their own opinion, but from an objective point of view, how could short hair or buzz cuts be any more interesting than a long, glorious mane?
Here in germany we don't have a dress code, but eventually I would have violated it, if there was one.
Thanks for the advice, I will keep that in mind.
I'm more of a Metal guy myself. When you are at a concert or Festival, it's just great to headbang while the band plays. I can't exaplain why, but doing it with long hair kicks ass. Some people manage to do it with no hair at all, but that is very rare.
Yeah and also preferably before you start to bald at some spots. Long hair can cover those spots up, though.
I'm sorry for the loss.
In my opinion, being a Longhair hair is also a state of mind and those who do it for fashion only to cut it off when it goes out of fashion were never real Longhairs to begin with.
I'm skeptical about that. My terminal length might be knee length or even longer, but that's not how long I want to grow it. I will grow it all to my hips and then decide if I still want to get a Sephiroth haircut.
I don't know what to say other than thank you for your help.
Since 1952? That long? I'm impressed,
One thing i would add for cosplay is that for the audience a
wig usually looks better than natural hair. (To evaluate something
like this look at the costume from a distance where the
audience will be sitting or stadning.) You may be able to skkip the wig if your hair is how you want it to appear, but you should also absoluteley wear a wig if you're going to do something that
could damage your natural hair.
