I am Totally a longhair. I personally am confortable with my hair, and identify with it. I think it looks good. So, I guess everyone here feels the same way. BUT, do you ever get emotionally and mentally Exhausted by the feeling that you are Constantly in a state of Defending your hair? I don't mean that you are verbally doing that, although sometimes you have to. I mean that because there are so few of us relative to the rest of the population, by definition we are seen as "out of the ordiinary" or "fringe", and therefore just by Having our longhair we get those surprised looks, or suspicious looks, or judgemental looks etc. You all know what I mean. I find I have to try a lot harder with people to just carry on a normal conversation and have them "forget" about my hair and relate to ME. It sometimes becomes really tiring to be Confident, open but defending my hair at the same time.I don't care that others don't like longhair for themselves, they have the same rights I do. But, do any of you think it would be a lot easier and a lot less energy expended internally if you Could be happy as a shorthair? As I said, I have no choice, I AM a longhair in spirit and reality, but it does get cumbersome to deal with at times mentally. Do Any of you experience that? sj
Hi sj,
I must tell you that I lose no sleep over what people think of me growing my hair. Since I don't have much patience with intolerant people, I simply eliminate them from my daily routine. If this isn't possible I simply lay down the law and make sure they understand it. If they don't want to understand, they are ignored. My life is much too short to waste it with idiots who feel the need to push their opinion around!
I sure hope you don't spend much time dealing with such nonsense! With that said, onward and downward! We will prevail, I can assure you!
Ted
I don't really have to "defend" the fact that I have long hair or that I am growing it out because I simply dont give a fck for what people say.
Some people decide to cut their hair short, others decide to go bald, others decide to grow it out. Its simple! Its a matter of being free to choose whatever you want to .
No, because I would not be true to myself and would be what the hippies would have referred to as "plastic".
when I had short hair that most find "acceptable" on a man I felt very uptight and had lack of self-confidence.I also had lack of self-awareness.
when most of "society" has a proliferation of idiots why would you care anyway?
be true to yourself. don't change for *others*.
I haven't had any criticism of my hair since my mother back in the 1970s. Move to California. Nobody here cares.
Yeah I went though this in the 60s and 70s as I continued to grow my hair long. The more complaints I got the more it inspired me big time to grow my hair even longer.
"But, do any of you think it would be a lot easier and a lot less energy expended internally if you Could be happy as a shorthair?
It may be alot easier but it won't happen before the day i kick the bucket. I'm a long hair for life and will be until the day I die.
I would mention that i'm 58 years old now, I got lots of complaints for many years but once I reached the age of
about 45 the complaints stopped. People got the idea I wasn't going to cut my hair, and after the age of 45 I started to get the respect I didn't get in my younger years. It's very easy
for adults to tell youth younger than them to get a hair cut.
It' a lot more difficult when that adult with long hair is older.
You're problem isn't your hair. It people. You are obviously spending too much time around people who are negative and personally critical of you. Such people are going to be bad for you no matter what length your hair is. Find a better class of people to hang out with. Life is too short to put up with such negativity. Trust me. There are plenty positive people in the world who don't do this sort of thing. Find them. Dump the others.
At first I felt just like you described but over a period of time
I've gotten to a point where I couldn't care less about what others
think. Once you are totally comfortable with yourself then you
are able to pretty much carry on with your life without giving
much of a thought to others opinions. In my case I not only have
long hair but tend to dress out of the ordinary also so people
would have more than one reason to give me the stink eye, but I
care not.
As you have probably figured out, most of us just don't care! LOL!
No, just ignore peasantry who would have you change.
